I took the new Titleist AVX prototype balls out for a spin today.  Overall, I was pretty pleased with them.

I'll put them on my launch monitor over the holidays, but first impression was pretty good.

These balls didn't spin too much, as is the case with the current AVX.  To me, they felt a little firmer than the current AVX's, as well.  As for overall distance, these prototype balls seemed a little shorter off the driver - but irons seemed to come up to what I expected.

I swore of the current AVX's because of excessive spin of driver and irons, but considering the way these played today - I would play these balls, but not @ $50 a dozen!!  At $35-39 a dozen, it's a no-brainer.  If Titleist ever priced it there, they'd probably run Snell, OnCore and Vice out of business.

It is interesting that you think they spin to much.  I play them specifically to limit the spin off of the driver and the MGS ball test data suggests the ball is a low spin ball.

I will be looking to try a few of the new AVX balls when released.

I agree with you on the pricing.  Its one of the reasons I am leaning on switching to the Tour Response ball.  Similar low spin and much cheaper.

What was the spin numbers along with the aoa, face to path, dynamic loft of your driver shots with the old ball?

You are the first person anywhere I’ve seen say excessive spin with the avx

  • 3 weeks later...

I played these in FL last week after also getting 2 sleeves. Compared to current V1x and MTBx on some holes over 3 rounds.

Off driver, good control and distance and didn't spin much. But... on greens with approach irons and wedges? I spun back many, many shots, that it took me until the mid of the front 9 on last round to play behind the pin and let it spin back to the pin. I feel these now spin a lot more than the 1Vx with approach. And once I found that out on my last round? 4 birds on the back 9. To say my brother was incredulous is an understatement. LOL

Also, if the OP could change the title to AVX and not AVS, might come up on searches more.

Mixed bag... Mizzy irons, Callaway Woods, Vokey Wedges, Odyssey putter

I did my post-play "survey", but it didn't ask me a single thing about the performance of this ball.  It was more of a generic marketing survey.

Except to say - what kind of ball did we send you, do you like it better than your current ball.

Nothing specific.  Well, can't say I'm disappointed as I got two sleeves of the new Titleist AVX balls.  Happy for that!

Is it me, or is that cover a tad non-centric? 2-3 o'clock looks much thinner than 8-9 o'clock. Or is it just where they cut with the dimples being a shade different?

I think it's the perspective. The picture doesn't look like it was exactly face-on when taken. Note how you can see a little further "around" the ball on the 8-to-11-oclock side?

Glad to see that that AVS was a typo.  Thought that Titleist was coming out with another new ball.  AVX continues to be a great golf ball for someone who wants a good distance ball and less spin on the greens.  "A" lternative to the "V" and "X".   Being a member of Team Titleist thought I might have missed something.  Enjoy the new ball.
