Just got Vokey SM9 in 54 F Grind and 58 D Grind. They replaced 2 CBX 2 wedges that were too ‘bulky’. They will go with my Titleist T300 irons and have the same Mitsubishi Fubuki MV shafts. 8” of snow today, so I won’t know if this was a good switch until either in a simulator or Spring.

My suggestions to customers is if you have the 7's, switch to the 9's. If you have 8's, unless they are beat up, hold until the next release.

I wouldn't get too excited over the SM8's price dropping.
From what I've heard around the camp fire, the remaining stock on SM8's is much lower than usual.
Which means either much less of a price drop, or if there is a price drop you may not be able to get the grind, loft bounce combination you are interested in.

I got a bag full of Cobras.... Well, not the putter... yet.

I was trying to avoid switching, but my 7s are worn out (and replaced by other less expensive wedges), so I am sadly looking at dishing out some serious coin for 3 of these wedges.  I think they look okay to me.

The L Grind 58-04, a fixture in the Spin Milled series since its inception, was left out of the SM8 lineup.

I'm curious to see if the SM9s still left it out or not.

I can have an SM6 version completely rebuilt by The Iron Factory, but it will be significantly more expensive than a brand new club.

Still, that may be the only way to get the wedge I need (or at least want).

At the very inception of the concept, circa 1978/79, the original lob wedges were low bounce.

Later, the highly popular Cleveland 691  58° was advertised at 0 bounce.

The idea was to avoid hitting the belly of the ball which is what happens when the trailing edge hits the ground first at a slow swing speed from just off the green.  If your hands are well ahead of the ball to avoid doing that, you're delofting the club.

I can't imagine a high bounce lob wedge.  That's a sand iron.

People should learn better technique and how to use the bounce instead of the extra shaft lean which is where most amateurs destroy their short game because they end up sticking the club into the ground.

Correct.  I am well-versed in history of golf clubs as someone who graduated high school as the GBB, 975D and DCI were all common among golf gear heads.

Sorry. Maybe I missed something.

The original post didn't address what I hadn't brought up yet.

The post in response to what I did bring up suggested that very few of us are still  looking for that club---probably true, although I am.

The last post indicated that you were aware of the original lob wedge concept.

No major disconnect so far.

It appears the issue is that the original concept of the lob wedge is no longer viable among most players, with a few folks like myself being the holdouts.  Is that it, or am I missing something?

In a few months I'll probably move to SM9s and move my SM8s to the practice bag. I like to have a practice set of wedges; and a gamer set. I will probably buy a Vokey gap wedge to compare to the Mizuno gap wedge too.

Have you noticed any issues with swapping between different wedges?

i personally couldn’t use two different types of wedges for practice and play. Irons and drivers no issues but with partial shots I need to know how my wedges will perform and if the designs between practice and gamer are different it’s going to impact on course play

They stopped making the L grind in a 58*, so I have not moved on. I keep checking eBay and if I find a SM6 (which I think was the last model that offered this) I try to buy it as a backup.
