1st Time Club Refinishing

Recommended Posts

Hey Spies!

I've got a couple of old clubs that I like to try and refinish. I have zero dollars into these two clubs, so it's really just a fun way for me to get into this! I'm really just interested in trying to get as many of the dings and nicks out of them that I can and shine them up a bit. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!

Tools that are on my bench:

Small Buffer Wheel

1x30 sander with a couple different grits including a cloth ferrule belt

Club clamp

Ruler

Anything else that you think I would need to do a decent job on these?

Thanks!

Would be cool if you do your own club stamping on them!

Good luck and looking forward to how the project turns out.

I've done some stamping in the past and that's the plan for the wedge. Never stamped a putter though 🤔 I'd have to figure out how to get the putter to sit flat

I did something similar to a set of 1967 Wilson X-31s that I picked up at a flea market for $12. Doesn't look like you have any rust to deal with so that's good.

It's going to be tough to remove a lot of those dents/dings. Scratches, yes, but those dents/dings are probably going to require removing/adding material and then at that point you'd be looking a needing a rechrome or a different finish (I think). Pretty sure guys like Flanigan Bilt Putters are actually welding small bits of material back to the club head and then grinding back to factory smoothness.

Doesn't mean you can't get a nice polish, though. I went to Harbor Freight and picked up a polishing drum for an electric drill and some polishing compounds. Started with the brown compound and finished with the green. Results in a much more mirror like finish on the chrome.

Good luck! Look forward to seeing the end results.

THe base you put the club on needs to be study. Anvil kinda sturdy. I use the back end of my vice.

secure the club to the base, you dont need the club slipping when getting ready to stamp.

Use a mallet not a hammer. a mallet with weight and when swinging it be deliberate not a wild swing. firm and in control.

OR,,,, you can buy a press from the local harbor freight and just press it into the wedge

Driver - 44.5" 5.0 flex 10.5 deg Graphite Design XC 6S GP MCC4+ 1 deg closed

Irons - 5-pw, GW stnd length 5.0 flex same grip 1 deg flat. Type low medium offset cavity back, no diggers

Wedges - 56 and 60 tour grind wedge spinner and mcc4+ grip 2 flat 10 and 8 in bounce

Putter - Makefield VS LH

Ball - truvis

Carried in a Sun Mountain C-130 USA bag - BE PROUD.

HC - LH but 85 is a good number, playing in Ohio.

Thanks on the stamping! What about the refinishing for the putter or wedge?

Both clubs have a bunch of bag wear. I.e. bumps and gouges.

Those can be cleaned up with some sanding. However it will remove the chrome or other finish already on the club.

Once smoothed out you could polish the wedge to a high polish finish for a similar look. Keep in mind the protection provided by the chrome is now gone and you will have to keep an eye on it. OR,,,, you could remove all the chrome to the base of the club and then blue the club. Forewarning here.  bluing a club takes some pretty serious chemicals to do so research thoroughly before trying that.

The putter is the same in regards to removing the dings. However I don't think the finish on the putter is as tough or deep like chrome. I would lightly sand out the dings, then make the top line a satin or dull finish the high polish the sole (just because I think its cool) and paint fill to your liking. this club does not take the abuse a wedge takes so you dont have to worry as much

Thanks for the tips! Any suggestions on what grits to start or end with?

When you say that the protection would be gone, is it going to patina like a raw wedge would or am I risking damaging the metal itself by using it?

I appreciate the feedback!
