Get a “travel” set, or no?

PMookie

Recommended Posts

With the new job Im going to be back traveling via airlines again, so Im pondering, “Do I get a travel set of clubs?” I’ve not had issue with the airlines and my clubs, but I know Im rolling the dice… The biggest con for me is money… If I were to get a travel set, they’d be something used, and not likely to be the same Honma’s I play.

Thoughts???

I am assuming your primary reason for the secondary set would be damage or loss by airline.   If so, how would you deal with a situation where the backup set was lost or broken?  Would you then pack the primary set until you could replace the backups?     I know with the recently publicity regarding Havland's set it makes you think,  but airlines ship clubs everyday without damage.  Get the club stick, remove heads,  grips up, etc. and you most likely be fine.  Or looking into a service like shipsticks.     I vote pack your gamers.

I don't really have a "backup set"; I have several options I can swap in and out of my bag.  When I travel to Palm Springs in a few days, I will take the clubs I have in my bag that I last played.  None of them are new; my Callaway driver is almost a year old; everything else is 3-20 years old.  If my driver were damaged or clubs lost, I get to go shopping!!

Pack your Gamers. I travel with clubs several times a year "for work". If you pack them correctly, no problem. Club Glove has been by far the best for me. I have gone through two others before I got the CG.  I have three complete back up sets but I still bring my gamers.

I like the idea of bringing your gamers. I didn't want to pack my clubs when I went to Florida for work last month. Realistically, it cost me more to rent a set for the round I did play than it would to bring my clubs and be able to use my own gear. I would have had plenty of time for a few extra rounds if I had brought my clubs as well. I don't adjust quickly to differences in clubs, so would prefer to keep the gear I'm comfortable with in play.

Thanks. I took them with me for 2 1/2 years doing like you say with the arm, heads, etc, even wrapping the irons with the club towels I’d use on the trip. I just recently read about putting the irons in head down. Thanks for the reply

+1 for the primary. I would think the only way a "backup" set would work is if they were an exact replica of your gamers - heads, shafts and grips. The last thing you want is getting back home only to find your distance, shot shape etc slightly off because of the adjustment to the travel set

I would get a travel BAG. Use a short set of your gamers in a smaller package . I travel with D-3hy- 4-6-8 gap wedge and putter. It’s amazing how fewer clubs offer “creative “ options, especially on unfamiliar courses.

An AirTag uses Bluetooth to connect to an iPhone during the initial setup process, and an iPhone needs to be within a range of 33 feet to connect to any Bluetooth device, according to Apple. Therefore, and regardless of the actual range of an AirTag, the operating distance is 10 meters.Jan 3, 2022

In the precision mode you need to be close to pinpoint an item. If further it uses the find my network. Same as find my phone in essence. So you can use the find my network to get you to an area then precision mode kicks in to pinpoint. The air tag pings off of all phones in an area which then sends you the location. The more crowded an area with other iphones the more precise the location.

We had a bag lost January 5th (Seattle to Oslo, via Iceland).  We just got it back Feb 25th.  It was incredible that we even got it back at all.  The AirTags idea is fantastic.  There MUST be people with an iPhone close enough to "ping" off of for the AirTags when in lost and found, no?

With the 10's of thousands of people roaming the airport and the amount of baggage handlers roaming around the planes and conveyor systems, I would say your odds of i phones being near by are a sure bet.

On the original topic - I fly back and forth from Seattle to Oslo all the time and have brought many different clubs over the years.  I like to pack the irons in a shipping box, as it forms a sturdy "spine". I also take the heads off my woods.  I rarely bring a bag but when I do, it's always my Ping Hoofer Light.  I hate the thing but I've had it so long and it's been to so many amazing golf courses all over the world now, it still comes with me.

I don't travel for golf much, but I had a chance to play while on a trip to Seattle recently.  Obviously, I hadn't brought my clubs since it was an unplanned round.   I got to play with a rental set which was a full set of current model Srixon's, CBX2 wedges and Cleveland putter.   I didn't care for the huge GI ZX4 irons, but I really like the ZX7 driver.   I will definitely put Srixon drivers in the mix next time I look for a driver.   I vote for 'no backup set.'   If my clubs are lost, I'll play with the rentals.   BTW, I'd probably ship the clubs.  With the baggage fees for economy flights, it's not much more.

Back when I was trucking over the road and had my own truck I carried an old 7 club set. Had a lot of fun in those days playing different usually local goat track type courses especially in the Midwest. LOL bought those old clubs at a course in Indiana with a bag for like $20 but did buy a new Anser from the same pro for like $40 or so. LOL he threw me in a free 18 hole round with cart. Nothing spectacular just a part set of 1953 Spalding Top Flite 3 5 7 9 irons and an old Dynamiter SW with an old Spalding persimmon driver and canvas bag. Got a lot of kick for the buck out of those. Beat the heck out of sitting at a Truck Stop all weekend with an oversized load. Believe it of not still have the Anser putter.

If you can afford it, definitely go with two identical sets.  Saves all kind of hassle dragging them thru airports, extra waiting around luggage carousels, extra damage and time wasted, never mind the extra wear and tear. Club deceivers services work great but the costs add up.  Two is the best way!👍😁⛳

Yes yes and yes. Having a travel set is a great idea.

We had another thread about rental sets and how they are fine, but for us golf junkies there is too much variety and in play with them.

A travel set may not be a as high end as your normal set, but at least you can build it to your specs and you can have familiarity with it. Making the travel golf itself more enjoyable.

I'm not sure I'd want a travel set... I guess maybe if you had a prior set you were still comfortable with or had a duplicate set as your gamers that would work.  I just wouldn't want to be like "oh man I wish I had my normal set here"

I can see having a travel bag though! I feel like (even in a proper carrier) your bag is likely to take more of a beating and maybe having a more compact bag would be worthwhile for travel.

Well... my answer is yes and no.  I HATE flying with clubs... so when I can, I ship my gamers to my destination so I don't have to deal with them on and off the plane.  But the timing is critical... I'm usually wanting to play when I'm at home, while the clubs are in transit... so that presents a bit of a problem.  Where my "travel" set will come into play... this spring, I plan to visit my family in Washington State (which comes along with playing at least 3 or 4 rounds while I'm there) and I plan to leave a set at my Mom's house as that is where I'm most likely to travel more often (family trips home to see family... PNW Meet Ups... you know... the required travelling).  So I guess I need 3 total sets... one to have at home, one at my Mom's, and one to ship to other destinations 🙂  Lucky for me... I will probably be adding to my set collections as I test the new offerings for 2023... now it will be choosing which set to send away long term, which set to send away short term, and which set to be without when I travel.  haha.
