Pro's & con's of different number of dividers

I'm looking to buy a new cart bag and lots seem to be 14 way dividers yet most tour bags are 6 way.

My current Titleist bag is 14 way and my carry bag is an old 8 way Mizuno. No real problems with either but was wondering what are the advantages & disadvantages of both?

I guess 14 way is easier to put the clubs back in the right hole..

How many have you got and what's good/bad about it?

I have a Ogio Goliath cart bag with 14 and putter well. My stand bag is 6. That being said I'm picky and have my bag organized that each club has a specific home so not sure i would like less then 14 for a cart bag.

For me the consistency of clubs in the same spots is awesome. Only pet peeve is order of them when on the bag of a cart vs pull cart as the bag or orientation is flipped. Then i have to take it all out and redo it... Grrr 😂

14 individual full length dividers plus a discrete putter well.

I'm not bashful about using the fifteenth slot.

Individual dividers make it harder to forget a club out on the course.

You notice the empty slot pretty quickly.

Also, if you have two fairways woods of virtually the same length with identical headcovers,

you still instantly know which one to grab.

Everyone is different... I like the:

I'm not bashful about using the fifteenth slot.   Me either when I figure that out.

I use a BagBoy Revolver XP Cart Bag but is the last model that doesn't protect the putter as much on the outside. I got it for a cheap song, like it and need to get a smaller grip for the putter to fit right... haha. Haven't had one issue and like that it locks my forged in place and see if anything is missing.

To each their own though.

Recently got rid of a 6 way for a bag with full length 14 way dividers. My old bag did not have full length dividers and my grips would all get kind of tangled together down in the bag. It's very annoying pulling one club out and having an extra one or two try to come along for the ride as well as the grip catching on a shaft or another grip and not going in when returning the club to the bag. With that said, I don't think I can go back to a bag that isn't a 14-way anymore.

I have a 5 way and I am not a fan. Too much grip tangle. My next bag will almost undoubtedly be a 14 way.

6 way staff bag always... plenty of room for all your clubs and few extra for practice days.

Works great when riding or on a pull cart.  Normally a little lighter than a 14 way bag, plus love classic look of a Staff Bag. Much easier to get the clubs in and out of the bag as well.  Whenever I buy a new set of irons, I buy a new matching staff bag. The bags always last as long as the irons.

Really like the 14-15 slot bags for cart and 6 slot lighter bag for pushcart.

I've got 14 in mine.  I think the biggest advantage is that if I see an empty slot, that's a signal I may have left a club somewhere.  Usually I just "mis-filed" it in another slot, but I have left a club just off a green, and it is best to know about this earlier rather than sometime after the round.

I have a 15 way bag and I can always look to see if one slot is open to know that I have the legal amount of clubs. The other open slot is sometimes used for a test club, ball retriver or alignment rods. I'm ok with this bag. The clubs sometimes are a little cramped taking them out but the grips are somewhat protected.

I use a 14-way for on a cart (Ping DLX), and a 5-way stand bag (Ping Hoofer) with 2 dividers for walking.  Key with the 14 way is to make sure it has full length dividers

Advantages for 14-way:  Grips don't rub against each other, easier to organize the clubs in the bag and (as others pointed out) see when you might be missing a club, less likely to select a wrong club (I always make sure 6, 8, 9 are apart from each other).  Disadvantages: 14-way bags are generally heavier to carry, oversize grips (i.e. "jumbo" arthritic grips or "Mo Norman" non-tapered grips) might have tight fit.

Advantages for 3-, 4-, 5-way: Bag is lighter for carrying, easier to put clubs in, takes up less room in the trunk of your car.

The key with any bag (but especially for 14-way bag) is to have full-length dividers.  If not, grips will still get tangled and hard to put in or take out.  I had a Ping Hoofer 14, thinking it would be best for both walking and cart, but it only had two dividers going full length, and club grips still got tangled up, so I traded it in for Ping Hoofer 4-way.

Hope that helps!

I have a carry/stand bag with a 4 way split and a separate pouch for the putter. I have the 4 wedges in the front, 7-9 on the middle-right, 5, 6 and the 3/4 hybrid in the middle-left, and driver and 2/3 hybrid in the back. It works well for me with the smaller bag size.

I suppose that a cart bag would make more sense to have the 14 slots to keep the clubs separated better. Less wear and tear on the grips and shafts I imagine.

What brand and model is that 15 slot divider ?

I own a Titliest cart bag with 15 holes with one being oversize for the putter.. I have 14 clubs and a ball retriever. There's a umbrella holder on the outside.  Laugh all you want about the ball retriever but I play premium balls and if I can recover it from within reach of shore....   I will.  Until I'm under contract with Titliest for a lifetime supply of Left Dash's, I'm fishing for them. 😏

Been golfing 63 years.  Consider myself better than average. Play 54 - 72 holes a week in season.

14 Way bag for me, I have used 6 way but clubs move around too much. They start leaning every which way become tangled up in the bag.
Also having jumbo grips the 14 with full length dividers let the clubs in and out much easier. neat appearance and easy to put back in the exact same spot each time.
Professional caddies have all day to pull clubs, they never have to play shots.  They don't pick the bag either, the MFG., gives them tour bags to use.
They have to carry lots of extra stuff as there is no cart to set it in. More and larger pockets are needed, with extra towels etc. It's their only task on the course.
