Many are going to spend regardless of the selling price.  However, that doesn't mean that it justifies it.  $1499 is just a bridge too far.  Is that 5-PW or 4-PW?  I mean, I'm as guilty as anyone for spending on clubs regardless... but there is a breaking point for everyone where they just say it's far too much money to spend on a set of irons when you still have to buy woods, wedges and putters.  Just my opinion.

That’s for 8 clubs. They are retailing for $187 that’s $1 more than the t series per club and $2 more per club than apex 21.

P790 are $1299 for 4-p

Even Srixon has crept into the $1200 for a set.

Good clarification!

I think I still stand behind the statement though.  I mean, I like so many here, have the same sickness and will spend on clubs regardless of the prices.  But when the USGA, PGA, and Golf Manufacturers in general speak of growing the game I find it a hard pill to swallow when we see the ever increasing prices.  Now, I know many are going to say inflation, costs are surely more on their end and they have to profit, etc... But when I think of someone knew coming in the game and getting caught by the bug.. They're in most cases unless they have a lot of expendable cash going to resort to the second hand used market more than they are going to go to the new market because of the price points growing like they are.

Regardless, they're beautiful clubs that I can't take away from them nor would I.  I just see the price increases by all these different OEMs and think wow that's salty.

Unfortunately it’s inflation and supply chain issues. Most people can’t afford to buy a house right now because the price. Cars are getting outrageous so yeah it’s definitely something that will impact who can buy but even before that prices were on the rise. As golfers we have been spoiled with low prices and many forget how drivers were $500 in the late 90s. Technology and manufacturing is changing. Let’s take Callaway and their use of AI. That isn’t something cheap to use and they are using it for all the woods now. Then we look at graphite shafts and they are moving to better materials every year and that’s going to impact prices to an extent.

The pxg effect has been felt in the industry now and they saw how they were able to sell clubs at a higher price point. The first couple years of pxg that effect wasn’t there but Callaway jumped in the train with the epic irons. Now everyone is in the $1000+ for iron sets.

A driver circa 1978 would cost over $1000 in today dollars. If you look at the history of club prices, yes they have always been expensive, however compared to almost every other product out there their price has actually come down not up.

And the thing is **most** people are not buying new iron sets each year or even every other year. We're an anomaly.

I don't think it's all that uncommon for people to hang onto iron sets for 10-12 years if they are not gearheads. Driver may see more turnover, but I know plenty of serious golfers that don't tinker with their bags.

Even at $1,500/set, over five years at 20 rounds per year, that's $300/year or $15/round to use the clubs. If I'm a casual golfer spending $1,500 for irons, I'm not playing goat pastures, I'm likely paying $50+ for a round and $30 in drinks. $15 isn't much to add.

Regardless, this release is very intriguing, especially in the retro spec lofts. Seems like such a configuration would split the forgiveness vs. loft jacking issue so many players distance irons have.

I know Ping has been a long-time contributor to MGS Forum tests and really, really hope these are a testing opportunity this year.

I have to agree with you there, and then even for some of the bigger gear heads, irons seem to have the most staying power in the bag.  Drivers and Putters might be flipped weekly, but the middle of the bag seems to stay a bit longer.

At least that's what I've noticed, could be wrong.

These are an intriguing release.  I'll want to take a swing and give them a look.

I see lots of old iron sets and wedges in bash with the random people I get paired with and driver is squally anywhere from 1-5 years old and fairway is the same even if the driver is new or relatively new

Irons definitely stick around in people's bags.  I just replaced mine this season after almost 10 years of playing RocketBladez.    I see people with something much older like ping eye 2's and TM burner irons all the time.

I hit a demo i525 head this morning at my local golf shop with the Ping AWT shaft.  I didn't turn on the launch monitor, I just wanted to see how it felt.  On solid strikes it felt and sounded great to my ears.  Noticeably worse feel and sound on bad strikes.  I think it looks really good at address.  Not a big iron but not a butter knife.

14 of the following:

Ping G430 Max 10.5 degree

Callaway 2023 Big Bertha 3 wood set to 17 degrees

Cobra F9 Speedback 7/8 wood set at 23.5 degrees

Callaway Epic Max 11 wood

Ping Eye 2 BeCu 2-SW

Mizuno 923 JPX HM HL 6-GW

Hogan sand wedge 56 degree bent to 53

Maltby M Series+ 54 degree

Ping Glide 3.0 Eye2 58 degree

Ping Glide 3.0 60 degree

Evnroll ER2

Ping Sigma 2 Anser

Cheap Top Flite mallet putter from Dick's, currently holding down first place in the bag

TaylorMade Mini Spider

Bridgestone XS

Saw this at a local store today and LOVED the way it looked! I set it down next to the i59 and there wasn’t a whole lot of difference, just a SLIGHTLY longer head in the 525. Small, nice thin top line, yep, I’m going to be heading back to that store to try the demo out on the range. I’m a sucker for Ping irons…

Nowhere near as good as almost any set of PING irons.  That said, they'll have to earn the spot.  The G425's nearly won the day and it remains to be seen if the i525's can get it done.

  • 4 weeks later...

While at the range today testing out my G400 3w and 5w shafts (swapping), I had a chance to hit the i525.  It was brand new, still had the plastic wrapper 😍.  They have the Recoil ES780 F3 shaft which was a close second to the MMT80's I'm playing in the ZX5's, however, it was standard length and flat lie (vs. +1/2" and +2 deg).  Nevertheless, in the face of a challenge, we spies persevere.

One thing I really noticed was swing weight and grip.  The i525's felt light and now that I've moved to midsize, the standard grips feel WAY small. I used my SC200 to capture data and despite the i525's being slightly stronger loft, the 7i carry distances were very close - the ZX5's a mere yard longer.  The PING's sound really good but I could feel mishits into my hands whereas I don't with the Srixon's.  On well struck shots both sound good but the ZX5's are less offensive on mishits.  PING set out to address the negative feedback on the i500's pertaining to sound and I think they have done just that.

Here's a few pictures to help get some of you through the backend of the long, cold winter.

i525_Zx5face.jpg.f08136024bc5da4bbbfeb78c33daddff.jpg

i525back.jpg.2aab4cf37c5416546d3327fd20dc98d3.jpg

As you can see, the i525's have a much more radiused top line which helps make them appear thinner.  The offset is close but I might give the nod to the PING's as being a whisker less. The new badging on the i525's is, IMHO, better... but I still love the look of the ZX5's much more.

Whoda thunk you'd ever hear that from me? 😆

Here's a few pictures to help get some of you through the backend of the long, cold winter.

i525back.jpg.2aab4cf37c5416546d3327fd20dc98d3.jpg

As you can see, the i525's have a much more radiused top line which helps make them appear thinner.  The offset is close but I might give the nod to the PING's as being a whisker less. The new badging on the i525's is, IMHO, better... but I still love the look of the ZX5's much more.

Whoda thunk you'd ever hear that from me? 😆

Does the sc200 show spin and launch? If so what where they compared to the zx5?

No worries I like to see the extra data especially when it comes to distance comparison to see where each is coming from

I went to a Ping demo day at the local country club today and went through a fitting for these (not buying them) to see what they could come-up with. Started with Recoil Smackwrap, no-go, moved to Steelfiber i110 stiff, better. He switched the head to red dot which is flatter, and bingo. Piercing ball flight, dead-on the 190 flag. These were REALLY good. Feel, looks, performance, etc. Too expensive for me with the $30+ upcharge shafts, and I have the ZX7 on the way. Really good irons.

I just received my i525s last week! I was fit for them in early April. I was coming from Apex CF16s, and tested against T200, P790, Rogue ST Pro, and JPX 921 Hot Metal Pros. They were the most consistent of the bunch for me in terms of dispersion and launch. I came in wanting the 790s, and to be honest didn't even know these existed until my fitter brought them out. My distance gains weren't earth shattering, but I probably gained close to a club throughout the set. I went with 5-Gap. Was fit with the AWT 2.0 shafts which felt great. I had previously gamed SteelFiber i95, but I am a high launcher and was launching a bit too high with those shafts on the i525s. They're already on the high end of the price spectrum so I'm glad I didn't have to upgrade into those shafts. I've only hit them in the sim once since receiving them (I'm in Minneapolis and weather has been crap), but I think it's gonna be a good year. Also, I received the free Arccos sensors and a 45 day trial quickly after receiving the clubs. Last thing I'll say is I'm stoked with how gorgeous they are. Hoping y'all get to try them soon!

Paul, What did you think about the sound? No surprise on the lie adjustment as I seem to recall PING's color dot system changed slightly.  My PE2 green dot = 2.0 deg up and the G410's green dot 2.25 deg up.  Not certain why they made those adjustments or even if they were consistent across all model irons?

I'm pretty certain the ZX7's will have you quickly forgetting about these 🙂.

I can say from my experience the sound is definitely a little loud and tingy, but not offensively so. When I hit the T200s in comparison I definitely felt and noticed a clicky sound, which I didn’t like. In comparison to my CF16s they are a bit louder for sure, but I don’t mind it. I used to game a Ping G, 4 iron and that sounded more like a hybrid than an iron. I’d say the i525s fall somewhere in between. For the purist, bit it may be a bit on the annoying side.
