What goes on in your head when you slice?

Lol, not again!

Worst thing for me is to try to diagnose what went wrong, which can quickly get me on track to snap hook or otherwise mishit for the remainder of the round. I'm better off if I just try to slow my swing down or quiet my movement. For me the big push-slice comes from trying too hard to load up and getting blocked, and if I try too hard to correct it I end up going over the top and snap hooking left from that.

Yes, that's the worst thing to do.  Sometimes a bad swing just happens; pros do it and move on.  When we start diagnosing on the course, make a change; we don't trust our swings end up struggling the whole round.  Been down that road.  Just set up as you practiced and play what you have for the day.  Figure it out afterwards.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

I don't typically slice the ball.  It's probably best if I don't share what goes through my head at that moment when one creeps into my game.

Doesn't matter whether it's a slice, hook or sky ball - the first words are WTF. Then after calming down I quickly review my notes on my phone so that the same doesn't happen on the next hole. Note; using this approach I can generally quickly diagnose what happened and how to correct.

That's so true.  In the first few seconds after processing result, I feel like after all of this time of playing decent golf, I reverted back to infancy. Whaaat just happened?

Remember infancy? we were all a mess back then.

One thing I'd like to add, one skill that goes unappreciated in golf is being able to find our golf ball after a horrible shot. Huge stroke saver.

My first thought when my brand new ball starts veering to the right is "WHY?". I immediately start thinking through my swing checklist and wonder what I didn't do correctly.

I believe someone else mentioned this too but I get a little hot temperature wise sometimes too. Strange but it's happened a few times. Especially on the first tee when there always seems to be a crowd watching me tee off.

Typically it’s my tempo. I get to quick not allowing my  shoulders and hips to turn. Or I really emphasize the over the top swing. I can be heard a few times referring to myself in the third person which can be comical

I usually say something like “come on Ben” or “you moron” if it’s really bad. Then I’m immediately in “can I find it” mode then try to move on to “how do I minimize the damage here?” mode

A good friend's response is "Where in the world did that come from?".

He is not playing right now for medical reasons but thanks for reminding me of the great response.

I normally hit a very straight drive. But I did have my back messed up about 35 years ago in a skiing accident. Buy the 17th hole I tend to get a little stiff and not bend over enough causing a more around the body, rounded swing. This can result in a big fade or if I have the ball slightly more forward in my stance, a slice due to the outside to inside swing path. So on 17 and 18 my thoughts are bend at the waist, check ball position, swing.

I never slice unless it's on purpose.

My misses right are all dead pushes.

That's much harder to figure out.  Why didn't the ball come back?

  • 1 month later...

Once it snows they close the clubhouse down for the season however depart the tee markers and flags in place.  They are absolutely okay with humans taking walks the course all through the winter and actually there are a few people with the intention to exit at least as soon as a month irrespective of the weather just to mention that they did it by taking online service.

everyone slices.  Not something that it curable. Moreso self maintain. The great like Tiger can manufacture one when he needed too
For I slice a lot of wedge shots in practice to get that feeling out my system when I begin to think slice.
