Tape Build up

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking about building up under my grips with Tape. Going to use Blue Painters tape and Air to regrip.. I have standard size grips I want to go somewhere between standard and Midsize to see if I like or need to go bigger.. Has anyone played with doing this and how many wraps of tape should I go???

I have done it, I think up to 4 or 5 wraps. What I have found is that there is a difference in feel, they tend to feel squishy. Nothing wrong with it, however it is a different feel.

I have an extra wrap of blue tape on the lower hand of a few clubs of mine. It's noticeable. Not sure if I'll bother to do the rest of my clubs or not.

It's an easy enough experiment so I'd encourage you to try it out!

My preferred feel is two wraps of tape the entire length and an extra two wraps for my bottom hand.  I use standard size grips, not midsize.

I also regrip with air and use 4 wraps of blue painters tape the full length.

That's the beauty of regripping with air though, put on some layers and try it out.  If it's too big or too small just blow the grip off and add or remove layers until you get the feel you are looking for.

To speed up the process take your irons, say 6i-9i and do 3, 4, 5 & 6 wraps under each.  Then head to the range and see which feels best.  Beats doing one, hitting balls, then going home and trying all over again.

Standard size on everything.

Honestly, the major reason I experimented with it was because the Lamkin Sonars twisted a bit without actual grip tape. I thought maybe adding one more layer near where they twisted might make them stop. I haven't hit them enough yet to know if I was successful... 😀

How do you like those grips in general? I have the Lamkin REL's and they are ok, the grips are in great shape still would rather experiment with tape then buy all new and realize they don't work...

I enjoy the Sonar Tours a lot. I had the regular Sonars on my Cobras for #CC4, but went with the Tours on the Sub70s and prefer the smaller lower hand (although, I'm obviously tinkering with that with the extra tape). They are fairly grippy feeling and not really soft at all, reminds me of something similar to a cord but easier on the hands. Some tack when freshly washed.

The little ribs do tend to wear off near my "trigger finger" on the lower hand, and they weren't all that great in the rain. But overall they have 75+ rounds on them plus a lot of practice and they'll last this year for sure, and I would guess even longer.

I think I'm going to give Pure Pros or the new Pure Combos a shot next time I'm in the market for grips.

Generally yes.   But you have to also consider the core size of the grip and the butt size of the shaft.  this chart should help you.   Mid size is 1/16 larger than standard.

Yes check that chart, but 4 wraps is pretty close.  I use PURE grips and it was just easier for swing weight purposes to stick with standard size grips and build them up vs going with midsize grips.

painters tape is thick by comparison to get the size you are looking for try 2 or 3 layers. Alternate the locations to prevent making a rib/bump/ noticeable change in the grip

For me I do two extra wraps and then a final layer. I use all double sided tape because then I know the thickness is the same and that's the way I did it back in the shop. I make sure that I alternate the seams on the tape. I used pure grips a long time ago and I liked the feel of them, but I found that with the painters tape underneath, the grips would turn and twist. Just my two cents worth.

golfworks sells build up tape that has the same thickness as the double sided stuff.  I prefer it since it's less layers to add and it's cheaper/easier to work with than the double sided stuff
