Beer of the Week #4: Lagunitas Hop Stoopid

Here is a great video talking about the beer.

http://www.lagunitas.com/beers/hopstoopid.html

How genius is that idea of having the brewer describe the beer on video.

My take on the Hop Stoopid. Well first of all, I grabbed this beer because I really like the Lagunita's IPA. Around here that one is even available in Rite Aid, frequently on sale for $11.99 a twelve pack. Great IPA.

This one I am pleased to say is also very tasty. The guy in the video is not kidding about aroma, The bouquet in the nose is full of a bunch of different smell, overall a very pleasing aroma.

Taste is also very pleasing with almost a little of citrus one the front side. Then the hops take hold.

This has an amazing bitter finish. it grabs hold of your tongue by its bitter parts and shakes it all around. This is a good thing

The lingering taste in the mouth is also quite nice and overall at 8%, I can easily see enjoying enough to transition to stoopid.

Hopefully you can find it near you. it is worth searching for.

What a delicious beer. Truer words couldn't have been spoken. All hail the glory of the hops!

Sactown's Beer of the Week #4: Pliny the Elder, Russian River Brewing Company

So I saved one of my favorites for the last week of the contest. Pliny the Elder. Perhaps the most unusual beer name, but there is a reason:

Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "Lupus salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, Humulus lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle's legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

From the brewer site: http://www.russianriverbrewing.com/web/brews/plinytheelder.htm

Once again here is a beer with a great aroma. Your nose is in for a treat with this beer. As you can see from the photo, the beer is also a little cloudy too, but don't' mistake this beer for a hefeweizen. This is a beer with a great hoppy taste, although not as strong as the Hop Stoopid from last week. It is very drinkable, even for people who are not fans of the IPA type hopping. It is very smooth, with zero harsh characteristics in the mouth either during or after drinking. Again, this beer is a little strong (8%) and doesn't taste like it, so be careful.

They also make another beer, Pliny the Younger. The younger is only available in limited release and in kegs only. Supposedly though, it has people claiming it is the best beer ever. Interesting stories about the Younger can be found online. Drink the Elder and read about the Younger.

Beginning next week, I am going to steer away from my comfort place of IPA type beers. Maybe April is porter month, stay tuned... :)

Not available in Chicago, sadly. I will be toasting the end of this contest tomorrow night with some Bells.

For anyone who lives near a Binny's (not sure if it's only in Illinois), April is Craft Beer Month and they are supposed to be having some sales.

I am having a Killian's Irish Red tonight with dinner, can't wait to try it. I am sure a few PBRs will follow it, but I will start with the high dollar stuff.

Since I was traveling through Indiana yesterday (and will be again tomorrow) I decided to drink (and now promote) some Indiana beer: Three Floyds Brewery. I've had their Gumball Head, and yesterday was drinking Pride & Joy Mild Ale which was very nice, mild, and refreshing.
