SPY VIP GolfSpy Dave Posted March 5, 2010 SPY VIP Share Posted March 5, 2010 Why beer in a golf forum you say? This thread is in honor of anyone who has (or will) snuck the occasional can or bottle of golden goodness onto the course. Perhaps only on the 19th hole or perhaps on holes 1-19, this is for you. So without further fanfare, I present the very first beer of the week: Sierra Nevada's Glissade Golden Bock. Sierra Nevada brewery is located in Chico, CA and has become known for its fine Pale Ale. This is Glissade Golden Bock is one of their four seasonal beers and is new foe 2010. For those of you familiar with beer lingo, bock is traditionally a higher alcohol, very robust beer. I always take the loose translation of Double Bock to be "2 beers" and Triple Bock as "3 beers". Bocks for me scream winter nights. Curling up by the fire, enjoying a heavier beer to make it through the 45* Sacramento night. Brrrrrr. (It's cold for me. Snow is something people should move away from...) Glissade Golden Bock tore asunder my notions of the Bock style of beer. As you can see in the photo below, it is not a dark beer. It was a shock to me when I opened the first one. It had the golden hue of coming summer. Taste-wise it is very aromatic in the mouth and nose. Nice initial taste and smell and a great hoppy finish to the mouthful. Far lighter and smoother than any bock has the right to be. Do beware though, the alcohol content of Glissade is similar to a traditional bock (almost 7%). It is so smooth that the alcohol can creep up on you a bit. Two or three white seated and you may have a Woah! moment when you stand. I give Glissade my highest rating of "Keep an extra 6-pack in the fridge" Hopefully the beers i find are not too regional for the majority of readers to find. I am open to suggestions for future weeks beers, although I look forward to going to Whole Foods and raiding the beer section. Cheers! mudfish
For the longest time all I've been drinking is Labatt's Blue, but recently I have gotten into drinking beer from local breweries... there are 2 around here that I like: Middle Ages Brewery, and Empire Brewing Company... Although I'm not a huge fan of dark beers, they have quite a good selection, and I'm starting to expand my horizons... SPY VIP GolfSpy Dave Posted March 5, 2010 Author SPY VIP Share Posted March 5, 2010 Sacramento just had a "Beer Week" event last week with local brew pubs and restaurants bringing in smaller breweries for tastings. Guys from Dogfish Head Brewing were cool and the beer was great. They are east coast, I believe. Making me thirsty. I may have to increase the frequency of this column... Matt Saternus
Speaking of beer sold in 4 packs, has anyone tried any of the Sam Adams 4 pack beers?
