I've tried flavored stouts before and I just can't get into them; I've had a couple different chocolate stouts, a coffee stout, and an oatmeal stout. Now one that I have liked is the Bourbon Barrel stout made by BBC in Louisville, KY. If you ever get to Louisville (my second home), you need to make a trip to the BBC restaurant, besides the awesome beer, they have great food. They make a beer battered pretzel stuffed with jalapenos and cheese, with a spicy beer mustard; they are amazing.

I just got an invite to head to Great South Bay Brewery's tasting room tomorrow the the new IPA that they have on tap as well as their limited run Milk Stout. The brewery is literally three blocks from my house (and no I did not know that when I bought the house). I am pleasantly surprised at the number of quality craft beers out on Long Island as compared to the Philly area. Trips to southern Delaware to Dogfish were the real driver in getting me into craft beers.

So I thought that I would dig up this thread for a couple of reasons.

1. Sours

Last week I was down in SoCal and hit the tasting room at The Bruery. They had a flight of sours on the menu and having never had sour beer, I ponied up the $9 and had my mind blasted. For those of you, like me, who have not tried sours, you are missing something amazing. Most are strongly sour up front, followed by an amazing cascade of flavors depending upon the brew. The Tart of Darkness was my favorite. Crazy complex. Think of Violet Beauregard chewing the gum in Willy Wonka. The flavor just kept changing and progressing. We finished with a pint of Brown Creeper, an amazing brown ale. For an extra $3 you get to keep the glass as well. Hit this place up.

Anyone else into sours?

2. Winter Seasonal Tasting

So every year, we host a caroling party. We meet at our place for food and beverages and then we traipse around the neighborhood annoying the neighbors with song. It's a fun tradition, but this year I am adding a seasonal beer tasting to the mix. What I put to you is this simple question:

What is your favorite Winter Seasonal beer?

I've heard all about sours and haven't had one yet... looking forward to the day I get the chance. My buddy went to Russian River brewery and that's all he talked about afterwards.

For the holidays, I drink my normal stuff - though I had a random pumpkin ale last week that was surprisingly good (usually I don't care for them)

But, specifically for thanksgiving, I'm cracking open my home brewed IPA :-)

You're too fancy for me

PBR in a can does the job for me

PabstBlueRibbon.jpg

Ahhhh PBR, outstanding!! The drink of choice in the days of higher education some thirty years ago, has now become the drink of choice in 2012, what goes around comes around, although I now prefer the long neck bottle Fanastic with all types of foods except yogurt and cheese omelets.

Respectfully,
DHUCK WHOOKER

You guys need to get the Untappd app for the iphone. Maybe the greatest beer resource out there...

I have a couple of buddies that are home brewing right now and working towards opening their own brewery, they absolutely love that app.

I don't think I'd get much out of it since 90% of what I drink is Stella lately :)

I've got to add Mother's Brewing Company's Three Blind Mice Brown Ale to this list, brewed in Springfield MO. Might be the perfect Brown Ale! Their Winter Grind coffee stout aint bad either!

Sierra Nevada's Narwhal imperial stout

It's black, thick, strong, and delicious.

Don't forget the strong though (10.2% ABV). One with dinner and
