How often do you purchase new wedges/do they really change year/year?

The Callaway Mac Daddy CB wedges, are by far one of the easiest, if not the easiest, 'cavity back' wedges to hit. 

If you're playing cavity back irons, then I would continue to play the Mac Daddy CB.

I took my own advice and switched to the Mac Daddy CB wedges (50*/56*/60*) and couldn't be happier with their consistency and forgiveness. 

I'm 73, and still play to an 8 hcp. I play graphite irons, but prefer the feel  and resonance of steel shafts in my wedges.

Muscle back wedges are definitely more precise, but also require the proficiency in your golf swing to extract that higher performance. Golf is tough enough, so why complicate things more. 

You should check with Callaway and see if they can refurbish the groves, and make your wedges, as good as new again.

I change wedges out typically every 5-10 years.  I am probably in the middle of that range now and am getting new 52 and 58 degree wedges.  Two reasons.  First, I just purchased Titleist T200 irons which increased the distance I hit the PW and GW, which left too great of a distance gap between GW and SW.  Second, I want to get a full face high toe lob wedge (58 degree).  I actually got fitted for new wedges last year and was not able to see any increase in spin with new wedges vs my old Cleveland RTX wedges.  So, if I did not want the full face high toe lob wedge (58 degree) and had not purchased the new iron set which created an unacceptable gap between GW and SW I would not have needed to get new wedges at all!

I bought my four wedges 7 years ago - custom made Titleist / Vokey's 46 degrees (110 - 120 meters), 51 degrees (100 - 115), 55 degrees (90 - 110m) and 60 degrees (75-90m)

I bought as the course I was a member of need me to have a sharp approaching game - I not a member of that club anymore, but I will use these beauties very effectively.

I tend to change my wedges out if, at the end of the year, my local golf store has a good trade in. If you get to the store in the right 2 to 3 week window, they have hundreds of used wedges in stock.  And they mis-stamp at least a handful of them, leading to great deals. 

E.g., this past year, I traded in my 52 and 58 degree wedges and got a nearly mint Bridgestone Tour B XW1 black 52 and SM7 58 degree for a combined $40 after trade in.

I will play my wedges until the grooves show wear before I start looking for a new one.  I have used Callaway wedges and will continue to do so.  They have been a excellent choice.

Cleveland CBX 56 degrees, had it for 4 years and re-groove it every year Having a real hard time getting rid of it. Also use Ping and Mizuno. Planning for VOKEY or CBX 2 next

To the second question, do wedges change year to year. Every new model has "changes," most of the time the difference in scoring will be nil, so the change amounts to little or nothing. The marketing hype will have you believing otherwise, but that's marketing. Every once in a while a brand will come out with a new wedge (or other club) that's a flop, a step backwards - e.g. Mizuno E21, came and went quickly.

@Onesavant I'm a cavity back wedge player also.  I've been playing Cleveland CBX2s.   I will have to take a look at MacDaddy CB wedges.  BTW, it's awesome to be 8 hpcp at 73.

I had to swap my wedges as I have to have graphite shafts but still SW is still steel. Up until 2016 my wedges were Cleveland Rusties and I still have them and love them. The SW is one. After 15+ years they still feel the same and I believe if anything the spin I can generate has become more consistent over the years. As they rust I believe this negates any wear on the grooves. They can certainly leave a nice file mark on a ball if I really it down on it.

Does anyone actually buy used wedges?  If most people are upgrading their wedges because the grooves are worn why would you ever buy already worn clubs?  Seems worse than buy refurbished balls.

I’ve gotten a couple used wedges over the years but they were ones that looked like they’d never been hit. More than likely someone tried them and didn’t care for them.

Just purchased a used Titleist SM8 wedge. I could not even tell that it had been hit off of turf. Saved about $80 bucks.

All I know is I swapped out new wedges last year. My wedges were 5 years old or so, and the added spin was extremely noticeable, especially on partial shots with the new wedges. The courses I play most are small fast greens so this was a huge bonus. Considering swap[ping every 1.5-2 seasons.

Yup. As mentioned in this thread, there are times of the year where golf stores get flooded with people's wedges. And while most of them are beaten to crap, there are some that are absolutely pristine and near-mint.
