On course snacks

Recommended Posts

What do you eat/drink during a round?  This season I would like to get away from just grabbing a hot dog at the turn and go with healthier options.  I know it would be healthier to make my own, but to be practical ideally I would like to buy some prepackaged snacks that I can just throw in my bag.

I usually have an electrolyte drink and a protein bar at the turn. Fuel BEFORE the round is quite important as well.

I'm a mixed bag on this. Typically, I prefer to eat a little prior to the round and then not eat anything during. I've found eating anything at the turn or during the round can change my energy levels. At most, I'll eat some nuts during the round. I find anything sugary or high carb can like a granola bar or candy bar can make me really drag ass for a little while.

If I'm not concerned with performance or the round is going to be really long, then I will eat something in there.

Lately - 70 ounces half strength Gatorade (from instant powder), Pimento cheese/quality bread sandwich (PB&J when it's so hot pimento cheese melts/runs), and a couple of Nature's Bakery fig bars.

Almonds, trail mix, and granola are my go-to snacks on the course. I usually just drink water, unless it's a crazy hot & humid day, if so I'll add in some Gatorade.

I drink a lot of water flavoured with a water enhancer during a round. At the turn it's a Kirkland nut bar but I've also just bought some protein bars for the course.

Depending on time of day, I prefer my morning rounds if that’s the case I have a coffee on the way and for the first few holes with an English muffin. I’ll have a trail mix as a snack  throughout the round., with 1/2 water 1/2 Gatorade preferably. Heat of the summer I’ll bring an extra 40 oz of water/Gatorade.

afternoon I’ll have a sandwich with me, preferably PBJ

usually I'll pack a water or two, and a Gatorade if its going to be hot and I try to make sure I have a little between each hole, especially if I'm walking in the summer.  For snacks I'm a fairly picky eater so I usually stick with some granola bars, and maybe something like beef jerky.

For food I like to bring 1.5 servings of a protein shake that I’ll eat/drink at the turn. This means I pack 15oz of milk in a shaker cup and keep that in a small cooler bag. Then I pack 1.5 servings of my preferred protein for on the course (RuleOne “Pro6” multi source protein) and mix before drinking. If I can’t bring milk and need to slum it; I’ll bring my protein bar of choice “baR1” by RuleOne; and eat it with water.

I am on a clean, high protein diet so I’m not about to have a hotdog or anything crappy. Also, I feel like my hands are not clean on the course, so I don’t want to eat anything that my hands are going to be touching, like nuts or fruit. I do usually have something like an apple on the way to the course.

For hydration I usually use one of RuleOne’s BCAA drink mixes… Usually the “+Electrolytes” version if I’m sweating a lot, otherwise I like the “+Energy” versions that have caffeine.

I pack 1 banana, 2 granola bars with protein & Gatorade.   Oh and coffee.  My rounds are usually early in the morning.   I had a friend who would eat a huge back of beef jerkey during each round.  Another who would pack 6 pack of O'Douls.

Morning rounds are coffee and a Clif bar. I always have water with me, and I only drink Gatorade when it's very hot. Sometimes I put an electrolyte mix in the water. Snacks are usually apples, bananas, or beef jerky. Peanuts were a staple for years, but I found out I have a food allergy with them, so I need to find something else.

I try to have a protein bar of some sort with me. I always bring water with me, but lately I've been trying the "4ore" energy packets in my water. Hydration is key for me. If and when I have a beer or mixed something I make sure to double up on water/powder packet. I don't always eat my bar during a round and rarely eat a sandwich or dog at the turn. All depends on what time of day it is.

Will always have at least one bottle of  plain water and one Gatorade or Propel. Note I tend to dilute the Gatorade or Propel with plain water as they're too sweet for me. I tend not to eat anything on the course as it seems to bog me down.

Amen brother! What the heck is with all the healthy eaters so far. PBJ Uncrustables (Grape Jelly of course) is the way to go. A Gatorade to drink and if I'm dragging tail a bit put me down for a Mountain Dew.

Well I'm fat and need to loose 40lbs. Eating a snickers, Twix, or or form of encapsulated meat on a bun don't help that. Also protein bars don't melt, and I'm not a huge sandwich fan.

Those ProBar meal bars look really interesting, might have to pull the trigger on the variety pack.

Uncrustables also seems like a great option, although slightly less healthy than OP is probably hoping for, lol.

I'd personally prefer chewy over crunchy but chewy and summer weather aren't always a good mix.

Bag of nuts and/or jerky I find the easiest to have in small amounts. Protein bars are another common one but chocolate ones can melt and can be a pain if you can't finish them in one time between shots. Bottle of water and usually a gatorade.

A few rounds I started to pack a sandwich which was less convenient but I try to avoid hot dogs at the turn whenever possible. I'm 6'2, 200 lbs, so I eat a lot. Often make a large smoothie to drink on the drive to the course if it's around lunch or dinner and I haven't had a meal in a while.

Started bringing green tea in a thermos bottle to stay hot occasionally after trying it during a cold weather round early in the morning. Pretty sensitive to caffeine, so a coffee before a round is usually a good way to write off the first couple holes.

Being diabetic I eat a Adkins protein type bar and banana before the round. Have to be careful with most “power bars” as they are full of sugar and some are very high carb, which produces even more sugars.  I take along a couple low carb/low sugar protein bars, nuts, an apple or pear. Natural sugars from fruits are great for energy and protein sustains energy.  I found the store bought nut and fruit packs are great, as long as I don’t eat too much of the fruit. Gatorade Zero and a couple waters for hydration and never buy anything at the turn to eat or drink unless I need more water.

I swear I played better when I drank beer on the course but my card never showed it!
