The Masters is Not a Great Golf Course

"The tournament is the eight wonder of the world. I watch it every year, but it's not a great golf course. Never was a great golf course. It's a great venue, it's got a tremendous amount of history, but as far as a great golf course, it is not." - Lee Trevino, 2009

Great pullout Masters Preview in this months Golf World, with Lee Westwood's (and ex-Seve) caddie taking us through his yardage book hole by hole. Looks an amazing course to me - with what look like some of the toughest greens out there... I'm not really bothered about whether the players think its a great course, just about whether its a great tourney to watch - which for me, it always has been...

Looks amazing, the grounds crew it top notch, it's the Super Bowl of Golf, but a lot of players say it's not a great course. I would love to hear from Pros what they think is a great course.

Having never played (one day...one day), I don't know that I can fairly say if it's a great course. I think that for any mortal it would probably be pretty hard to separate the course from the aura of Augusta. I know that if I played there I would be thinking about all the shots I've seen played on various holes as I'm going along, and mainly thinking, "Holy &$^, I'm at Augusta." I doubt I would be critiquing bunker placement.

According to Golf Magazine, Trevino elaborated saying that the course was biased towards players that like to draw the ball because of the number of dogleg-left holes. He said cut/fade specialists were always working away from the greens, which made the course play longer.

well... 'The Masters' isn't a golf course, lol.

But, I can see where Trevino is coming from. Great course design utilizes existing topography to establish a balanced course. So it may be true that it is not all that balanced. But, no one can argue with the way the course is consistently set up and the venue itself. It is also difficult for us judge, considering many of us have never seen it in person. I know several people who have attended and they all say that TV really doesn't do the course justice. I also don't know anyone who has ever actually played it.

Wow.. Augusta National not a great course. Hmmmmmm. I might disagree with him on that. That course used to be setup for some of the greatest finishes in tournament golf. How can you argue with that??

I think that if players get mad at it, it may be a great course. Funny that people do catch a load of flack if they say it is bad. One of the mags listed the journalists and players who had issues with the Augusta folk after complaining. Can't blame the track if it doesn't match your game though. Car drivers who only turn right would be angry at Nascar.

Trevino also may be biased because he was not a fan of - and wasn't shy to declare it - Augusta National's ... shall we say ... "overly conservative" tendencies.

That was very diplomatic. :)

I would love to see a PGA in PR, Teeth of the Dog, or Hair of the Dog, which ever it is called, the most breat taking course I have ever seen pictures of.

I remember reading that now. I guess that's a fair comment - a course ought to have some balance between favoring fades and draws.

It is interesting how Augusta seems to be beyond reproach for most golfers. The aura is tremendous.

I think it's a great course, but I liked it better when there was no rough...as it was originally intended. I don't mind changes...but I'd like them to be in the spirit of the original design.

Plus, you don't want to find Moecat on the do not admit list at the gate when you get to Augusta National.

Truly. That would be like getting turned away at the Pearly Gates because you used the big guy's name in vain.

Anyone who has spent any time with Trevino knows the man has "issues".

I take whatever he says with a grain of salt.

I think the pinestraw and trees make the rough tough enough. I think the players actually look forward to one big tournament without huge rough. I know I would look forward to it.
