3 vs 4 Wheel Push Carts

Tyler86

Recommended Posts

Currently I have a Bag Boy Nitron. It was a fine cart before i got a cart bag, C130S. Its still ok, but I feel like it takes more effort to push than what is ideal. So im looking for possibly getting a different one that rolls better with a heavier bag. It got me to wondering if I need to go to 4 wheels instead of 3 and sacrifice a little maneuverability.  Any recommendations or input?

I've got a 4 wheel and wish I had a 3 wheel because of maneuverability and bag set-up. My buddy has a 3 wheel and the bottom of his bag sits higher than my 4 wheel. Net result; the bottom of my bag gets muddier/dirtier than his. I really don't see an advantage for 4 wheel - note I have a Sun Mountain Cart bag.

A 4 wheel is going to be a bit heavier than a 3 wheel, unless you change your bag again. I run a 3 wheel because I prefer the maneuverability over stability or anything else.

How do you feel it pushes? Im looking for something that “glides” well. The Sun Mountains dont fold down well from what ive seen which is why ive been hesitant to purchase.

I went from a four wheel to a three wheel and definitely prefer the three. My three, I also use the Nitron, is quite a bit lighter than the four wheel that it replaced and more maneuverable as well. I don’t feel like either of them pushes easier than the other in terms of effort. Before settling on the Nitron, I had also considered the Bag Boy Quad XL but at the time was unable to find one to look at.

While a 3 wheel is more maneuverable, your topography might factor in? My regular course has a lot of up, down and side slopes - so a 4 wheel is way more stable. I have a 4 wheel electric walking cart now, but I had a BagBoy TriSwivel II push cart for years before it. FWIW.

And BTW, if you go with a 3 wheel, I'd seriously consider a swiveling front wheel - a worthwhile feature IME.

Really like my 3 wheel caddytek. I’ve noticed with the 4 wheel models some of the front wheels don’t swivel which is a huge pain to pick up and reposition. I personally like the 3 wheel and would find it really cumbersome and monotonous to pick my cart up and maneuver it that frequently throughout the round. If looking to a lighter cart, clicgear is one to look at, possibly even electronic if you want to lighten the whole load while continuing to walk

Don't have a comparison since I haven't used the 3 wheel. Also we have a somewhat hilly course so not sure how I could rate 'gliding'

I have a four wheel variety and I'm pretty happy with it.   I suppose it does provide a little bit more stability.  I used 3 wheels previously.   I didn't notice issues to maneuverability, but I think I push down on the handle and lift the front wheels a bit to turn.  (I had to think about it, but i think that's what I do).  It comes naturally w/o thinking.

I like to let go of the cart on a hill and let it speed down the hill on its own.   Four wheels are definitely more stable for that.   Only issue when I let go on a hill is that the cart slices quite a bit not unlike my long irons.

have both a 3 wheel and a 4 wheel cart and I do NOT see any difference in how much effort it takes to roll it around the course. I'm 75 next week and it's NOT an issue so unless you are a good bit older than my 75 or have a health issue, I see no good reason to get a new caart, it will just be a waste of time and money.

All my clubs are custom built with aftermarket shafts that have been spine and FLO aligned for max performance every swing.

I have a four wheel push cart, that I only use when my course has path only days.  I have only had this cart, so I cannot speak to others  I will say that when I use it, I have no complaints.

I have a Sun Mountain 4 wheel cart.  Got it originally because I needed it to fold small to fit in the trunk of my MGB.  That was quite a while ago so I would bet other carts would fold small now also.  4 wheels are definitely more stable but I don't think that is a huge deal.  I also let my cart go down hills frequently.  The tracking is actually adjustable with a small allen wrench on the front axel so Pakman92 should be able to fix his slice (in his cart anyway).  I don't think the glide is really much of a 3 v 4 function but more about the size of the wheels - bigger wheels easier glide - so you might want to check into that.   I don't find it hard to maneuver the 4 wheel cart at all.  A slight push on the handle unweights the front wheels and turning is easy.  You do it without thinking.

I don't think 3 or 4 wheels will make a difference in how easily it rolls.

If you look at baby strollers, almost all the jogging ones have larger bike like wheels.

The Walker Trolley 'Cape' Model 1.5 is the only push carts I see with those type of wheels.

personally i like the 4 wheel, as they track straighter, and straight is 90% of what i do (straight into the woods often 😀).  turning is such a small part of push cart usage, and is generally accomplished by lifting the front wheels and pivoting anyway.  that said, be very careful with cart bags on a push carts.  i have a C130, and the bottom of the 2 large side pockets rub on the top of the front wheels of my cart.  i had to add a 3/4 inch spacer where the bottom of the bag rested on the cart to lift it up to clear the wheels.  this is why bags in 3 wheelers sit so much higher, as the bottom of the bag has to be above the single front wheel, as with 4 wheelers, they try to get the bag between the front wheels.

Thanks for the insight guys. Please include brand and models of what you guys are using. And FTR its not about not being able too push it. I pushed it for 72 holes this weekend, just fine and was gonna play again today, but it snowed. It was more that i noticed how much of a difference it made with a heavier bag on it. Which got me to thinking that there may be something better out there, that requires less effort, leaving more in the tank for the important stuff. Its no more a “waste of money” than upgrading to a slightly newer driver with head cover and wrench.

Its not the maneuverability thats the issue. Its how well it rolls that id like to improve. Less friction would be ideal, wether it be bigger wheels or better bearings. The carts great otherwise.

I have a 4 wheeler - Sun Mountain Pathfinder 4.  I find it lighter and easier to push than my old Clicgear.  Maneuverability not an issue, and I also let it roll (straight) down hills.

The front axle / wheels on the Pathfinder can be adjusted to be wider to avoid bag rubbing./  But I also find that non-Sun Mountain bags sit too low and top straps hit the putter well.   I secure mine 2-3" off the bottom bracket, which also helps with keeping a wide bag from rubbing against the wheels - but less than optimal.  I've had Ping Pioneer and Callaway Org 14 bags - neither fit great.   Point being - check how the bag fits on 4-wheeler before buying.

I had a 3 wheel for years and when I went electric it was much easier! 🙂  If you can go electric, do it, I promise you will not regret it.

I had an older version of the bat caddy until I got my ez-go...

I've been using a Clicgear for almost 10 years... it used to glide effortlessly, but lately just getting it in and out of the trunk feels like a hassle... or maybe I'm just older? Or lazier?

Anyways, I stumbled upon the Wishbone

https://www.wishbone.golf/wishbone-zero

The ZERO model weighs under 4kg and for under EUR 200, I think it's worth a try. But my wife insists I should buy the NEO (electric one), so I haven't decided yet. But if you are looking for lightweight, this should be it. The NEO goes for about EUR 650, weighs under 9kg...

I used a Sun Mountain 4 wheel microcart for quite a few years. In order to keep from destroying golf bags I got the Sun Mountain Sync bag, which is made for their push carts. I recently got a C-130 bag as a gift and am also looking at getting a different push cart. My friends that have 3 wheel carts seem to be exerting a lot less effort than I do pushing the cart. I will continue to follow this thread with the hopes of the OP comes up with a 3 wheel solution for this specific bag.

A 4 wheel cart is not necessarily more stable than a 3 wheel cart. Stability is based on center of gravity and the distance between the wheels. I use a Sun Mountain C130 bag on an original Sun Mountain Speed Cart v1 that I push twice a week at minimum. I also have a four wheel cart that I bought for my wife and have used from time to time. The Sun Mountain rolls more easily on the very hilly course I play weekly.

I’m with you after having used a 4-wheel push cart for about three years. The 4-wheel cart in both less maneuverable and more bulky than 3-wheel carts. The only advantage to having this Bag Boy 4-wheel cart is that I also have one of their cart bags (I had the bag before I got the cart). The bag fits perfectly on the cart and even “locks in” on the top ring of the cart. However, since I have switched to lighter weight stand bags (a Sun Mountain from Snell Golf and a Stitch ultra-compact SL-2 stand bag), so now having this cart makes little sense.

I originally bought a Triumph 4 wheel and after 3 months I had an issue with it and as they did not have any stock it was replaced with a 3 wheel. After 3 months I had got used to the requirement to lift the front slightly to turn but it was not really an issue. The big difference when I went to the 3 wheel was how easy it was to push. The reason was simple, the two main wheels were much bigger than the ones on the 4 wheel plus it also had suspension on the two rear wheels.

The only negative was it was much bigger when folded, however the wheels were easily removed it you needed to make it smaller.

Several friends have Clic gear buggies and they love them.

So the if you want a buggy that is easier to push and do not care about folded size get the one with the biggest wheels or alternatively buy a electric one, that way you just have to hang on and it will literally drag you round the course😃

I had a 4 wheel sun mountain and the bag sat pretty low so the tires would rub against the bag (maybe I have too much clothing in there but in Alberta you often experience all 4 sasons in one day so it's necessary). That was making it harder to push.

The 3 wheel that I have now doesn't rub against the bag becuse the bag sits above the front tire. And it is a little bit easier to maneuver but that wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.

I have a Ping Pioneer bag, not even that big of a bag by the way.

-Driver: Cobra Aerojet LS 10.5 (Kai'Li Stiff shaft)

-5 wood: Cobra Aerojet (stiff shaft)

-Hybrids: Cobra F7 stiff shaft set at 19.5 and 23.5 degree

-Irons: Mizuno JPX 919 forged 5 to PW ( Project X LZ 6.5)

-Wedges: Vokey SM7, 50, 54 and 58 degree

-Putter: Odyssey O-Works Red #7 (33 inches)

I play between 70 to 80 rounds per year. Living in Alberta, Canada, our season is shorter and with work, that is all I can get in, but watch out when I retire...

P.S. The picture is from my favorite course so far.

I have a CaddyTek 3-wheel Golf Cart with Swivel Front Wheel that you can order from Costco. Like it much better than the Clicgear 3 wheel model I was using previously, mainly because the Clicgear had a fixed front wheel, but also because the Clicgear was too low-slung, and the CaddyTek also has more features to it at about half the price. The only real drawback I see is that on a hilly course it tends to decide to move down slope on its own unless you fix the brake, which isn't super convenient to do.

I've never used a 4-wheel, so no comment there, but having front wheel(s) that swivel is a big advantage.
