Novice to Not So Bad

Recommended Posts

Tl;dr: I am relatively inexperienced player looking to build a foundation and improve my golf game. I’ll treat this as my journal to document what I am doing and how it’s helped me progress. I hope this helps similar novices who may be overwhelmed with the available and sometimes confusing amount of information.

Background

I am an early 30’s predominately right-handed-but-lefty-golfer in the Midwest. I’ve owned a set of clubs for ~15 years now but have played double-digit total rounds of 9-hole golf in my life. I’ve never played a round of 18. My golf outing of choice has been at driving ranges for social occasions or chipping whiffle balls into a net in the back yard.

I’ve had an on-again-off-again relationship with golf that is primarily driven by the number of friends I have who are interested in golfing too. I recently learned several of my neighbors are avid golfers and decided to fully embrace the stereotypical suburban dad trope and pick the game up properly.

There is a wealth of information here on highly-specialized topics or perspectives from experienced individuals – and rightly so. It is admittedly a little overwhelming drinking from the fire-hose, and I’m easily swayed into missing the forest for the trees by spending my time on the wrong things at the wrong time.

I want to keep track of what I’m doing this year and how it influences my abilities and overall enjoyment of the game. For small accomplishments and efforts, I’ll make a quick post here about what I did and how it helped/hurt. For larger efforts that could be their own topic (e.g. lesson programs, fittings, equipment, etc..), I may break out a separate thread to serve as a dedicated review/discussion. I will edit this top post to serve as a one-stop summary when I update in either manner though.

Completed/In-Progress/Scheduled

March – Shot 61 on the par 35, 9-hole Pottawatomie Golf Course

  • Shot 11 on the 476 yard par 5 first; Par on the 319 yard par 4 second. Such is my game.

March – April - Me and My Golf’s 30 Day Golf Swing Transformation Challenge

March – April - Me and My Golf’s Full Body Freedom lessons

April - Me and My Golf’s Beginner Golf lessons

  • In progress

April – Shot 62 on the par 35, 9-hole Pottawatomie Golf Course

  • Realized on arrival that I had forgotten my putter, that was a nice surprise. Shot 11 on the 476 yard par 5 first again; and had a few 4 putts using my PW / playing partner's putter. I think I would have played mid/high 50's had I brought my full bag. A worse score than March but I felt better about the outcome, weirdly enough.

Club Fitting

  • Fitted with Golf Galaxy. Fitting Recommendations: 1) Callaway Rogue ST Max OS, 65g Regular Graphite, Standard Length, Standard Lie; 2) Taylormade Stealth, 75g, Regular Graphite, Standard Length, Standard Lie. Fitting Experience: 0/10. Likely will not purchase. Description below.

May - Regripped from standard, stock 14 year old grips to Jumbo Golf Pride CPx at Dick's Sporting Goods.

May - Shot 58 on the par 35, 9-hole Pottawatomie Golf Course

  • PR, losing most of my strokes on the par 5 first. Had some great approaches and hit my wedges as well as I ever had. One of these days I'm going to start better than an 11, and I'll get into the low 50's.

May - Club Champion Full Bag Fitting

May - Purchased PuttOut Large Mat. Regripped putter from stock grip to Super Stroke FLATSO 2.0

June - Sporina SP8 Testing.

June - Purchased Rapsodo personal launch monitor for use with Sporina net.

Planning

Handicap index

  • Seems like this is a thing I should know/have.

Club Fitting

  • I am hoping to complete an irons fitting with a local pro who fits outdoors and indoors with Club Champion to compare experiences and outcomes before fitting the rest of the bag.

First Full round of 18

  • I have yet to play a round of 18. There are several nice courses near me, and I’d like to give a few of them a go. The closest to me, Settler’s Hill, was closed all of last year for renovations. I’d like to give that a try at the very least.

Home Putting Equipment

  • I have an ok-ish putting mat from Amazon and a Puttout alignment mirror in my basement. I’d love to upgrade the mat and possibly get a few new toys. MGS’s review of the Puttout Tour Studio and Travel Studio is probably going to drive a purchase sooner rather than later.

Putting Baseline

  • Planning to hit and document 100 putts on my PuttOut to create a performance baseline. I've been trying to make 10 putts every day, and want to see how this improves my putting over time.

Good for you!!  Have a lot of fun with it.

FYI, I started golf late in life (44) and tried to pick up the basics on my own and play with a local group at a muni.  I learned a lot of very bad habits that took a lot of undoing later.  My first league I played in was a 9-hole after work, and my best score was 63 so you already beat me!  At the end of the season the league had a 3-club tournament; I selected 5i, 9i, and putter... shot 47.  😂

I will be following along to monitor your progress.  A good plan and good coaching will yield significant gains.  Best of luck!!

@YourKillingMeSmalls Will do, and totally agreed! I love the short game - as soon as I can pull out a wedge and my putter, I'm having a blast. I've been trying to find a scramble event for my equally amateurish friends to play in. My buddy can hit bombs but can't chip to save his life. With our powers combined, we have a mostly functioning brain and the ability to hit reasonable scores 😆

@KennyB Boy that sounds like a familiar tune. Totally agree on the need for a good plan and a good coach. There is a PGA pro coach near me that a neighbor's daughter goes to and speaks highly of, but I tend to do better with content I can consume on-demand with my chaotic schedule. In-person lessons would may yield better/faster results than virtual, but not if I never have/make time to go in-person. I'm excited for the journey!

Then you might be interested in videos bye Monte Scheinblum on rebelliongolf.com.  Very reasonably priced and he will have discounts occasionally.  I have all of them!!  I particularly like The Efficient Swing and No Turn Cast.  I picked up a lot of useful info from his Use the Bounce 2 video, particularly bunker play. Also, check out his Instagram posts where he will highlight portions of his videos and make comparisons to pro swings.

Best of luck if you find a scramble event.  I'm playing in a charity event with my wife and another couple.  Don't have a chance, but it should be fun.

Updated with a link to the complete 30 day challenge, hitting a 62 on the 9-hole, starting the M&MG Beginner Golf coaching program, and Golf Galaxy fitting updates. Here's a rundown on how things went at Golf Galaxy:

Golf Galaxy
Fitting Recommendations: 1) Callaway Rogue ST Max OS, 65g Regular Graphite, Standard Length, Standard Lie; 2) Taylormade Stealth, 75g, Regular Graphite, Standard Length, Standard Lie

Fitting Experience: 0/10

I checked in to the service desk and headed back to the fitting booth. I was met by the fitter and what appeared to be a fitting trainee. I had no issues with multiple sets of eyes on the process, and the interview started. I was asked how long I had been playing and said a few years but only very very casually. I was asked what brands I was interested in and said I was brand agnostic but liked the looks of the Rogue ST, Stealth, and JXP921s. This would prove to be more impactful of a statement than I thought, as these would be the only brands I would be shown. I also mentioned I was interested in stock or no upcharge shafts (at the advice of this forum – thanks all!) because I didn’t think I was good enough to warrant the premium cost.

I also mentioned I was really interested in trying grips of different thicknesses. I have standard thickness stock grips and have never been in love with them. He said that they didn’t have any different thickness to demo but by looking at my setup he could tell I might benefit from a midsize or jumbo grip. Ok, I guess that’s it then? I’m not sure if this is typical but I was surprised that there wasn’t at least a collection of Golf Pride grips on steel shafts to swing around. He also asked if I typically draw or pull my shots and I said that when things are going well, I do. I’ve been told my grip is a little on the strong side before, so this made sense. Keep that in the back of your mind for later though.

I was told to warm up with my 7-iron and I was all over the place. I typically warm up at the range starting with my PW and moving towards the driver, so I was thinking I was just out of a routine. The fitter recommended moving the ball a half ball back from middle (weird, but ok). I started getting better results on my swing, so fine, I’ll stick with it. Maybe something about the room makes it look like I’m setting up somewhere that I am not. Who knows.

I first tried the Rogue ST Max OS, 65g regular flex graphite shaft, standard length standard lie. I saw an immediate improvement with a fairly tight 10-yard dispersion ring. The fitter commented “wow, we might not need to go much further than that.” I agree, and the clubs feel great. I then switched to the Stealth, 75g graphite, regular flex, standard length, standard lie. This setup is closer to my current club weight. I see a similar result to the Rogue ST Max OS but a little wider dispersion to the left and right. The club also doesn’t feel as good in my hands with the heavier weight. Then I switched to JXP921s 85g steel regular flex, standard length and lie, and the wheels come off. Dispersion is all over the place. I’m shanking or slicing everything I hit.

At this point, the fitter says that all of my numbers (whatever they were – I felt like I was drinking from the firehose with the trackman data) were all on the low side of optimal. He then steps away to talk to the training employee out of ear shot, and then comes back and says he wants to clear off all of the previous data and start fresh. I didn’t take a picture before the data was delete and regret it, because I never had any regular dispersion after that.

I tried the Rogue ST Max OS, 75g regular graphite, standard length and lie. Shank, shank shank. Switched to Rogue ST Max OS, 75g regular graphite, -1/2 inch length, standard lie. Shanks and slices. Tried the Rogue ST Max OS, 75g regular graphite, standard length, -2 flat. No change. Then Rogue ST Max OS, 75g senior graphite, standard length and lie. All awful.

At some point the trainee asks if there are other club faces to try and the trainer says in response “I don’t know of any other super game improvement irons to try.” I’m not sure if that was a polite way of trying to get me out the door since I clearly was struggling, a reflection of a lack of lefty-selection equipment, or limited knowledge by the fitter of new equipment. They certainly sell more game improvement irons than those three and I’d be surprised if I happened to pick the only three they had available. Oh well. The fitter then watched my swing straight on and had me hold my hands at my side. He pointed out that I had some internal chest rotation (which I knew about) which encourages a weak grip, which he claimed might explain some of the open slices I’m having.

Wait a second, didn’t we start this whole thing identifying my strong grip? Also, I'm no expert but I don't think my grip is what's causing my repeated shanks with a closed club face. He asks me try try a quick grip change to see if that helps. At this point, I’m in a fitting session using a new set up and a new grip. To the surprise of no one, it doesn’t help and likely made things worse. The fitter says something to the effect of “yeah never mind, you probably shouldn’t change anything right now anyways.”

A few other gripes during the session - On more than one occasion, both employees left the bay for a few minutes to assemble a new club combination and came back with a righty configuration. I get the mistake happening at the beginning of the fitting but after the third time, I started to wonder if they were paying attention. I also had other employees walk up to my fitter while he was assembling a club and make small talk. One started making light about someone else getting their lie analyzed saying “what does this look like to you? Flat? Upright? I’ve been trying to tell this guy what it is and he’s just not listening” while chuckling. The trainee employee was also taking practice swings behind me while I was taking swings. I’m sure it wasn’t the cause of my swing woes, but it was distracting all the same.

I just about threw in the towel and walked out with 20 minutes left on the session and in hindsight, I should have. I probably needed to work at the range more with the recent changes to my swing, or warmed up differently, or taken a 10-minute break, or something. I don’t blame the fitter for my poor swing mechanics, but I don’t think they were equipped to help in that moment.

All in all, I think I’d be ok with the Rogue ST Max OS recommendation, but the experience was so rough that I’m not confident in the outcome. I am confident I will never go back to Golf Galaxy for another fitting though. I’m glad I intended to try out multiple fitters, otherwise I’d be upset to have paid for what felt like a mostly worthless time. My confidence took a pretty big hit as to whether I’m at a point where a fitting is worth it though. I’ll hit the range a few more times before making a decision one way or another.

CAUTION!!!!!  Beware of the lesson, club fitting, black hole you are standing on the edge of!!!!!   This is my advice.  Play your 9 hole course from the SHORTEST distance possible.  Tee off with a 3,4,  or 5 iron to start. Keep the ball in play,  This will put more lofted irons in your hand for the 2nd shot.  Develop a swing with shorter irons.   Practice, chipping and putting 5x more than driving, and long irons at a driving range.  Play rounds on your own, finding your own improvement.  I have seen many people on this forum who have fallen "victim" to believing that they need a lesson, grip change, swing fix, differnt clubs, in order to improve.  Once you fall in it is almost impossible to get out of.  Build a foundation of knowing YOU CAN IMPROVE ON YOUR OWN, FIRST!.     Then if you find you need something specific fixed later on, then maybe a lesson.

Practicing chipping the ball onto the green from just off of it  to get it closer to the hole, this practice will also help in  eliminating skulls, and duffed chips, and practicing distance control on your putting.  This is a fact of almost ALL WEEKEND GOLFERS.  Your make percent on ANY PUTT OVER 10 FEET IS ABOUT 20%, and it just gets lower.  Don't think make putts over 10 feet, only think control your distance so as to NOT 3 PUTT OR WORSE.

I submit to you that playing courses as short as possible and practicing chipping and putting, will help your game far more than any swing lesson will at this point.  Put clubs you can hit in your hands, forget about playing courses at 6000 yards.  Play them at 5000 or 4800 to start.

Appreciate the input, as it validates much of what I've been doing already. I've been teeing off the short holes with the 5 iron at best. Agreed that new clubs are not needed - they're a belated treat and a commitment to myself keep at the game.

I told my playing partner this weekend that my reasonable goal is to treat my real "par" as a double bogey. Shaving 10 strokes on a 9 hole would be a huge accomplishment for me and to be honest, making par feels like making eagle for me 😆

No convincing needed to practice chipping and putting. They're the one thing I really enjoy doing and are as much of a strength as they can be for a noob.

As for whether swing changes would benefit me over the short game, I'll challenge you there. If it takes me 8 strokes using my 5i-9i to get within 75 yards of the green, but I chip on to the green and two putt for an 11, where would you spend time improving? That's been my game for the past month.

That one good shot really is addicting. The recovery moments are as well. I had a TERRIBLE shot off the tee on a par 3, second into a bunker and still made bogey. I was elated!

Good luck man, I subscribed and will check in some times. Glad your gettin' into it full swing! 120 to 100 is easy, I  think (never started at >120. 115 to 105 to 95 is easier. 95 to 85 is where I spent the most money in my healthy addiction but learned the most 150yds and more like 50 yds in and the tv short game shots. 85 to 75 must be harder b/c I'm not yet consistent. 71 was my best ever after 4 under through 9. That ish is stressful!

Most important, upholding etiquette and respect for the hallowed grounds. Fill your ddivots please and for the god of love, repair your pitchmarks and 1 or 2 more that some douchelords left behind! Bonus karma for learning how to fix them properly. That should be required to know if one's fit for golf before being fitted for golf gear! Tip the beer cart girl-beer cart girls rule-, have an occasional lunch in the clubhouse, and always thank the grounds crew you come across "for all what y'all do"!

Regripped my 14 year old, second hand, standard sized stock grips on my irons to the jumbo Golf Pride CPx. I really like the psuedo-alignment feature with the different textures but I don't know that I'm in love with the overall feel. I was debating whether to go with the CPx or the CP2 Wrap and went with the CPx on a whim. I might try the jumbo CP2s on my driver and rescue hybrid just to be able to try the different feels out on the course.

Hit a personal best at my go-to municipal course. If I can shave off a few strokes on these long par 5's that usually take double digits for me, I'll be a happy camper. My short game feels really good and makes me feel like I could break 50 on a 9-hole this year if I can reliably get to the green in +1 of regulation.

I'm also planning to check out the local Play It Again Sports for a used fairway wood to play with at the range. I still plan to get fitted, but I've decided to not go in cold turkey given how poorly the fitting at Golf Galaxy went with an off-swing day. I want to maximize my chance for success, so getting a cheap FW first makes sense to me.

Updated with a few more May activities, including Club Champion fitting, PuttOut purchase, and putter regripping. I'm glad I found the 3W that I did at Play It Again. I really think it benefited me to have had a baseline club to compare against at the fitting.

I'm feeling optimistic about June, and am hopeful for nice weather this week for another round.

As a retired club fitter, my impression at GG is that you were in a sales session and not a true fitting session.  For example, did your fitter try to understand where the ball was struck on the club face,  Did he/she check the lie angle on your irons before making a recommendation?  Did they check for speed and explain how that affects the flex of your club shaft.  There are about 10 key measurements that a good club fitter is aware of, of these 4 are critical to getting properly fitted clubs.

My advice, try to keep a log or jot down notes after your next round.  Focus on the shots you made that were good.  Also note the shots that were not so good.  These are the shots you need to practice.  Golf is a game of targets!!  If you want to improve. practice those shots where you are weakest on a target of that length.  Having golfed for nearly 60 years, remember golf is a game.  The biggest rewards are in shots well made and not lower scores.

You claim you shot a 61 and then a 62 on a par 35 nine hole course.  That means you shot 123 for 18 holes with a par of 70.  That equals 53 over par, so how do you come up with a 25 handicap?  Handicaps are based on 18 hole scores, and you are shooting more than 26 over par on only 9 holes.  Please redo your math and let us know what you come up with.

All my clubs are custom built with aftermarket shafts that have been spine and FLO aligned for max performance every swing.

I've enjoyed reading your thread here, as it is similar to my journey that started a little over a year ago.  I had been out of the game for about 20 years, as I took time to raise a family, and then jumped back in, taking the dive into the black hole of knowledge out there.  Overwhelming sometimes...

When I started back up, I went thru the same information overload in researching clubs, and swing and balls, and, and, and...  So, after all that, I wanted to upgrade from my 20-year old clubs I had fit for me when I was in my 20's and I found a local, independent club fitter to go thru that process (I'm now in my 50's).  He fit me according to my swing, and my game at the time (had been taking lessons, and grinding at the range for a couple months by this point, so it wasn't a wasted fitting).  He wasn't there to "sell me a package" of what he had to make quota on, or what he got the biggest cut off of.  I now have a very nice set of clubs that will last me a LONG time, with a lifetime warranty and adjustments (as long as I don't do anything stupid).  You can see my sig for what I'm playing.  I know may here will have differing opinions as to what I'm playing and the brands.  That's cool...

I say all this to suggest that you may want to get get a fitting from an independent guy, rather than Golf Galaxy, Dicks Sporting Good, or a big chain.

I look forward to your updates, and your goal to keep bringing that score down.

Keep it in the green stuff!!!

Hi Mynerds:  If you normally shoot around 61 or 62 for 9 holes and par is 35, than your handicap is between 47 and 50 for 18 holes.  Thank you for letting me know why you had 25 when you knew it wasn't correct.  Now it makes sense why you did what you did.

As to getting a fitting and new clubs, i would highly recommend that you do NOT worry about a fitting or new clubs until you take at least ONE lesson and get more range time under your belt. Reason I say this is that when you take a lesson, you will be making some changes in your setup and stance, and those changes will mean your fitting will NO LONGER be correct for YOU. When you make those changes everything will be different and you would need a NEW fitting to have a good idea of what would fit you.  So WAIT awhile and get fit later and not now. Any good instructor will tell you the same thing.  WAIT and do the fitting AFTER you take a lesson or two and then see about getting a fitting for your new swing.

All my clubs are custom built with aftermarket shafts that have been spine and FLO aligned for max performance every swing.

June update:

  1. I ended up purchasing the clubs I was fit to during my Club Champion Fitting from Fairway Jockey at the beginning of the month. Honestly, I only gave them a shot because of @fixyurdivot's posts. Given that they're owned by True Spec, I'd figure more people on the forum would have posted about them. Guess I'll break up the monopoly on Fairway Jockey info 😆. I reached out with my engineering specs from Club Champion and had to follow up to get any response. They gave me a 10% off coupon for sending the spec sheet from a competitor on top of being substantially cheaper in the first place. After discount, tax, and shipping, the same build from Fairway Jockey was ~22% cheaper than Club Champion. The build time was estimated at 4-5 week and we're just finishing up week 3 of waiting. I'm hoping to have the new clubs in hand sometime in July.

  2. I finally spent time making a putting baseline to track improvements from my virtual lessons. I'm practicing on a puttout mat with their pressure putt trainer, so I tracked both "perfect putts" and makes/misses:
    392069697_Putting-June.PNG.b95cb07fa7756ea9c272b681b812c883.PNG
Weirdly, I was perfect through 5 feet and missed one put at 6 feet for a 59/60 made putts. At 7 feet and beyond, I consistently missed my putts with the ball being dead on the painted puttout line but veering off in the last foot to miss one cup length inside (right-to-left miss as a lefty). I'm not entirely convinced I haven't worn out a groove somewhere, but I'll take this as a baseline and spend more time practicing puts outside 6 feet.

  3. I picked up a Rapsodo personal launch monitor for use with the Sporina SPG8 net test. I'll elaborate over in the test, but the reality for me is that hitting only into the net doesn't provide the feedback I'm looking for in terms of improving my game. The launch monitor with the hitting net has been tremendously beneficial to my my hitting sessions and validated my belief that my biggest struggle is with my irons. Here's a snip of Rapsodo's analysis on a session where I hit a dozen balls with each club:
    IMG_9312.jpg.e006205197113e1ba4b0c2a978675160.jpg
I may not be the smartest guy here, but even I can see where I suck the most. I'll be spending more time with my 7i-5i to improve there as well. I've spent some time finding lessons in my Me and My Golf subscription to help with my irons and will focus on those in the coming weeks. It should also be interesting to compare this bag striking baseline with the new set of clubs once they arrive. As a data fiend, the thought pleases me greatly!

  4. There is a mud wasp that is trying to set up shop in my garage. It is apt to get smacked with a club or a fog of Raid should it invade my personal bubble. Nothing will come in the way of my indoor hitting bay.

Keep it up! It sounds like you've got a pretty good plan going and it'll be fun reading about your progress. I'll make sure to give this thread a follow just to keep up with it.

Another thing I would suggest is getting a can of foot spray and working on contact, or at least using it to track where your tendencies are and seeing if you can change them. It's the one thing I like to do when using the net since I can't see full ball flight and don't have a launch monitor when hitting into the net.

Those putt make rates are great, not for your level but for ANY level of golfer. I understand they are indoors so some of the variables have been removed but still very good. How is your distance control? If you are not 3 putting often, more than twice per round, I would say focus on other parts of your game. Keep putting refined of course but if you are putting this well use your time wisely on other facets of your game.

Another thing I would suggest is getting a can of foot spray and working on contact, or at least using it to track where your tendencies are and seeing if you can change them. It's the one thing I like to do when using the net since I can't see full ball flight and don't have a launch monitor when hitting into the net.

Will do! Do you have any experience with foot spray versus impact tape? I don't really care what happens with the soon-to-be-old clubs, but I'll try to be as kind to the new clubs once they arrive. I'm not sure how well the foot spray cleans up or any goo that impact tape adhesive might leave behind.

Thanks! I've said before, I'm a scramble team's best friend if I can be carried (no pun intended) to within 100 yards of the hole ⛳. Putting is my favorite part of the game, and it's less "I need to improve on putting" and more "if I'm going to be playing with my putting mat anyways, let's work on 7 feet and out." I'm also going to move the pressure putter around on the mat and confirm whether the baseline misses are legit or if I really do have a groove in the last foot of the mat.
