I have been playing with a set of vokey sm5 wedges for a long time now but they have become quite worn out , i am looking for a new set of wedges no specific brand in mind , would love some suggestions.

I had the privilege to grow up in the Kruger national park .

I've just changed from Cleveland CG15 to Vokey SM8. Really impressed with them and the sole grinds are much better for me. Now the SM9 are out there's some good deals on the SM8

Mizuno wedges are high quality and you can find good prices on them more easily than most top brands.

I've really liked mizuno wedges in the past, but I'm fully on the sub 70 wedge train. If you are looking for a non standard more exotic grind, vokey offers the most options, but if you like a pretty traditional wedge, Sub 70 is great. I haven't tried the Hogan or other Dtc brands, but my guess is that they offer great value to.

I got two Sub 70 286 Forged Wedges for Christmas and really like them.  No exotic grinds but just simple wedges that work.  They are also substantially cheaper than the big name brands.

Honestly, are there any bad wedges?\

Wedges from any reputable golf company along with those from the likes of Sub70 and Maltby are all going to be good. It's mainly a matter of fit. I'm very partial to my Callaway PM grind wedges for my 56 and 60. I tend to prefer gap wedges that match my iron set as they tend to offer more consistent performance on more regular squared up swings. My current setup is Maltby MMB 17s down to gap which is 51*, then I have a PM Grind 56* and 60*. I've used Scor wedges in the past with much success. Scor now goes under the Eidolon brand now.

All in all, you can't go wrong with whatever you choose for the most part. There are some more unique wedges out there that have different purposes like the Mizuno ES21, Cleveland CBX, and Callaway PM grinds. I really like the CBX wedges if you have any turf contact consistency issues. I don't know a lot about the ES21, but it's a very different looking wedge in person. If you're on a budget, you can't beat Maltby. However, it appears you're from SA which may make some manufacturers harder to buy from.

Picked up two new SM9 wedges this year.  56.10S and 52.08F.  Was playing with a 58.12D, but just too much bounce for our surface and the thicker traps.  Vokey does such a good job with wedges and offers so many lie/loft combinations.  Only wedges for me.  Those SM5s must be smooth as silk, if you play often.  Time for a change.

Luvvv my Mizuno forged 50, 52, 58, and 60, .  S5, T7.  Any version within the last up to 7 years or even older are great designs. But the small company forged are probably also worth a swing.  Mizuno however does Grain Flow Forging, an advanced tempering process that others probably can't do.  It aligns the molecules and eliminates possible uneveness.

Driver: PXG 0211, A flex Evnflo Riptide (2021). And an old Callaway 454 TI (2004) on regular flex.

3 W: Callaway Steelhead Xr A flex Tensei CK 55 gram. The rest are Regular flex.

5 W : Titleist TSi 1 on Aldila Ascent regular flex.

Driving Iron: Mizuno MP 18 MMC 3 18 degree, on Mamiya Recoil reg flex.

4 iron:  Mizuno Fly-Hi, 24 degree hybrid iron, GFF, even tho it is a hollow body iron.

6,7,8,9,wedge: Ping I 500, on Recoil reg flex shafts.

Gap wedges: 52 x 9 Mizuno forged S5, wedge shaft; 60 x 6 Mizuno forged T7, wedge shaft.

Sand: Old original Hogan Sure Out on Apex original shaft, probably 56 / 12.

Chipper:  (yep I carry a chipper) old Don Martin "Up n In" bronze? copper? 🙂

Putter: Just switched Jan 2024 to a Odyssey Stroke lab "R" Ball with the 2 piece, multi material shaft.🙃

Have seen “wet” testing to simulate wet grass, morning dew, light rain/drizzle, etc. that indicate one can easily lose 40% of normal dry condition spin when ball, club or both are wet.

The 2 wedges that retained most spin were Ping Glide & Mizuno T22 due to some extra milling or texturing on the club face.

Just got some Cleveland CBX Zipcore and love them. Great consistency all around (I.e, my mishits).

Count me as another CBX guy. It’s the perfect tweener for me as a cavity back iron player. I played Vokeys that I had so many mis hits with. Finally realized I’m not a tour player and the forgiveness in the CBX has saved me countless strokes each round. They’re versatile enough to hit the standard square face pitch, to the more finesse type shots around the green. Highly recommend.

I replaced my Vokey wedges last season and replaced them with Sub70 wedges. Worth taking a look at them if you aren't brand specific. I really like my Sub70 wedges as they provide the spin I need and they were cheaper than the Vokey.

Talk about your needs.

What type of courses do you play?

What are your current lofts?  Are you finding yourself with shots you can't pull off with the current set?

What shape does your eye prefer?

Think more about how you use them than the name on the back of the club.  A wedge is not a wedge, they are all different.

This. You're going to get a great wedge from most of the reputable companies (including Tour Edge, Sub 70, etc). It just comes down to what your course conditions tend to be, your technique, and your confidence.

Case in point, I was playing with my brother in law's set last week. Had never used his CBX2 wedges before and his lofts were slightly different than mine. But after 15 minutes on the practice green figuring out how they were different than mine (heavier heads, which actually turned out to be great on partial shots), had no problem working them.

So many good options out there right now. I am partial to PING stuff so I have a fitting to try the Glide Forged Pros and Glide 4.0's in a few weeks (The 4.0's seem like a big hit on tour so far). Will also hit the SM9's (Flight Lines definitely have me interested), RTX Full-face, and whatever else the fitters recommend.

I really like the CBX line. However, I wasn't a fan of the stock shaft in the original CBX as it was too light for me. The heads are great though.

Me too. I have CBX irons and love them. Now after trying the CBX2 irons, I'm definitely keeping them in mind for future wedges. The heads did everythy I wanted, and I liked what I could do with heavier heads on partial shots.

My brother was looking for new wedges. I like my CBX2s, so I suggested that he try them. He said he tried them, and he didn’t really like them. But then he demoed CBX Zipcores, and ordered some immediately. I don’t know what the difference is, though.

Have you changed out your SM5 wedges yet?
I'm like you, hard to let go of the wedges.  I had a 54 degree, but still have the 60 degree SM5 Wedges.  Finally broke down last month and replaced my 54 degree SM5 with a brand new SM8 54/12 D and it has made a difference.  Newer grooves for one!  Haven't replaced the SM5 60 yet, black head model.  Looking at PXG or Ping 60 degree. Interested in the Ping Glide, they really seem to fit the eye.

Funny thing, is earlier tonight I had finished up on the range and hit the practice green to work on my short game, putting and chipping.  I was the only one there and had been there for about 30 minutes when I found a 60 degree Ping Glide on the far side drop off from the green that looked barely used.  Looked around for anyone that may have forgotten it and then took it to the pro shop where the kid behind the counter said thanks and dropped it in a box.  Someone somewhere is not happy tonight.
