Recommended Posts

I am flying to Hawaiian Islands next week and will be in Kauai in two weeks.

  • Is it better to play morning or afternoon tee times and why?
  • I was looking a Poipu Bay as one of the courses but any other suggestions

Kauai? I'm envious! I've spent time on Maui and the big island but never Kauai.

One part of the decision process: when is wind the strongest during the day. Watching the Lotte event a week ago - the ladies were struggling with 30 mph winds. Most weather apps can give you the wind forecast 10-14 days in advance.

My wife and I went to Kauai for our honeymoon.  Did not play golf but spoke with concierge at the Marriott in Lihue which is right next to The Ocean Course at Hokuala.  The top two that everyone would talk about are Hokuala and Makai in Princeville.

Now, if you're looking for food suggestions, don't be a stranger.  Kauai was incredible and I cannot wait to return.

Play well and have fun.

Poipu Bay & Princeville Makai are terrific!

avtually all the courses I played were terrific. Those 2 topped the list

Also took a helicopter 🚁 tour of the island including Waimea Canyon. Not to be missed!

I’m listening along and it reminded me of this post. Makes me smile reminding me of Kauai and may be of assistance for your future jaunt.

Princeville is nice.

Ocean Course at Hokuala is good. I have played it about 30 times. Marriott was the previous owner and I have played it since Timber bought it.

If you want to keep the cost down, I highly recommend Wailua Golf Course. It is a muni right next to the ocean in Kappa.  Twilight is around $50 with a cart.

I was just there in February. I have played in Hawaii a few times and it always is less windy in the morning than the afternoon. Afternoon winds can be really tough there. Poipu, Princeville and the Ocean Course at Hokuala are the 3 best. An under the radar course is Wailua golf club. It actually shows up on some top 30 munis in the U.S. it has some nice views and is pretty challenging and kept up nicely. I played Kiahuna for the first time in February. We were staying in Princeville and my wife wanted to do some shopping in Poipu so I made a last minute tee time. Not on par with the top 3 but still a nice course and half the price.
Here’s what 17 at Wailua looks like.40D16088-DB64-4E7A-A9D0-22EF2B02F2A2.jpeg.66c2751a3c3a916233a452d59240caf9.jpeg

Have fun. I am going to Maui in late July. Love the islands. Can’t wait to go back.

played there on my honeymoon along time ago. didn't play Princeville but heard it's fantastic. Poipu Bay is also fantastic and it's good for skills of all levels.

another vote for Poipu and Princeville.

In general, Hawaiian courses are less windy in the mornings....

You will enjoy "resort" golf 🙂

Princeville and Poipu are great. Princeville courses have some forced carries and tricky greens complexes but fairly wide fairways. For my money Wailua is fabulous for a muni.  Reading greens can be tricky unless you are used to Bermuda, even worse in the afternoon when they get tramped down and it's windier as well. My vote is play in the morning if you can and get a teriyaki chicken sandwich at the turn at Wailua. After the round, look for the elusive sugar loaf or white pineapple at farmers markets, you will be forever spoiled and addicted.

Have a great time and be aware that the native roosters are great natural alarm clocks so get to bed early.

Enjoy.

Those roosters had me up at 5:30 every day. I’d just get up have some coffee and watch the waves roll in. Not bad.6BB1CE47-0EF8-4BCD-A5A6-E7A0653292D9.jpeg.5448bf50fd36de6289b06160180175df.jpeg
