What’s your golf goal this year

Recommended Posts

The Last two years I have played my best golf since high school, I dropped my handicap from an 8 to a 3.6 during that time. I play in a Wednesday night 9 hole men’s league at my club and I probably play every other weekend, practice chipping and putting once a week and will go out on my course and play 4-5 holes a couple of times a week. I played in about 6 tournaments last year and am going to do the same thing this year.

My goal this year is to try and get to a 0 in two years, to do that I’ve got to get more rounds  under par, I was able to do it 3 times last year with my all time low of a -4 (67)at my home course. I also have got to play better at courses named not my home course and be more consistent in tournaments.

what’s your goal?

I have two goals.  One is course specific and one is season specific.

First, I'd like to par every hole at my home course.  There are some that give me fits, but others are pretty straightforward.

Second, I'd really like to get to a 10 handicap this year.  I've got a lot of work to do on this, but feel I'm making some progress.  Putting is a bug-a-boo at the moment, but that's what summer evenings are for!

A couple of mine continue from last year.

The first is to break par.  I've done it before, but it's been a few years now.  I shot a couple +1 rounds last year and had opportunities, just need to finish the job.  One of my better rounds, I was -2 on 14th hole at True Blue in SC only to Double a tough par 3 and finish at +1.  More of not knowing the course as it was my first time playing there.

Next, I would love to have a couple tournament rounds or something with more pressure through the year.  I think my game will elevate that much more if I can find ways to triumph when pressure is at it's highest.

Scratch would be nice.  I got to a 1.7 towards the end of the year last year, but it was a long winter and I have definitely back tracked a bit after the first 5 rounds I've played this year.

Since I will only be doing 9 holes rounds, my goals will be less handicap related since that likely will get inflated with the way the system works.

1. Shoot par on my home course front nine. Best i ever did was +4 I believe

2. Like above, try to par every hole on home course this year

3. Average 1 or less 3 putts per round (or combined nine hole outings)

4. Play 3 or more straight nines without losing a ball. Almost accomplished not losing a ball the last time i went out.

5. If i can make a deal, play in one NW Golf Guys Tournament this year.

I am incredibly fortunate to be having a kid in a few months, so my goals for this year are definitely different than last.

Rather than focusing on a particular score, I want to enjoy myself and have fun during every round I'm able to get out on.

Because of my ability to practice short game and not necessarily long game, I want to be dialed in from 50 yards and in and be able to get up and down in almost any situation from those distances.

And most importantly, I want to convince my wife to let me keep my birdie ball putting mat in the nursery where it currently is.

Rag tag bag, but it does the job.

Simple enough; more GIR. It's the execution that'll be the tough part since all of the work flows from there. .

I’ll be 65 this year. My goal is to live to 85 so I can shoot my age. Then if I don’t, I’ll re-evaluate how much longer I need to hang on.

I don’t have a card, because most of the time I’m injured . Or I’m doing something else.

The other day I shot an 85 on a par 72 with a slope of 128.

would my handicap be a 12  . I only had a card along time ago.

I don’t even know how it works.

 Thanks

Goals for the year:

1-Reduce handicap from an 8 to a 5 (trusting Arccos to help make it happen)

2-Practice more and have more fun w/ practice time. I don’t want golf work to be a chore

3-Ball speed on my driver from 155 to 160 by year end

4-Enjoy every round, good or bad

Also, I live in Chicago and have never been out to the John Deere Classic in the Quad Cities. I plan on seeing the tournament in July and going back later this year to play TPC at Deere Run. It’s going to be a great golf season!

My goal for the New Year was to break 90 - I'd shot 90 MULTIPLE times on the nose, but could never seem to string enough good (mediocre) holes together to fade the inevitable blow-up hole(s).

Last Friday (4/22) I shot an 89, despite a 10 (on a par-5) and an 8 (on a par-4), lol.  Started birdie, par, par, par - which is BY far the best start I've ever had.

So now, after looking specifically at those two "blow-up" holes as "good lessons" and not "bane of my existence", my goal for the rest of the year is to break 85.  The crazy thing is if I had even doubled both those holes, I'd have shaved 5 strokes off my card, so I definitely know it's doable.

Secondarily, I need to get a putter that I feel REALLY confident with.  I've been fitted for one, have the specs, and just haven't pulled the trigger yet.  I'm debating between a Ping Tyne 4 I loved, and the LAB (either the DF 2.1 or the Mezz.1), but am waiting until I have the opportunity to at least roll the LABs before taking the plunge.  Eliminating 3-putts is the quickest way to reduce my handicap (currently sitting at 15.2 thanks to a couple of good rounds on an executive course near me), and having a good putting round (like the day I broke 90) is usually the biggest key (for example, I shot a 94 a few days before, and I had six (!) three-putts on the front 9.  Absolutely shattering. Good news (if there is any) is that I didn't three-putt at all on the back, so...victory?).

Everything else is just part and parcel of being more consistent - and getting out every week (to either practice for several hours hitting balls/putts or to actually play 18) has had a huge positive impact on my game.

At the end of the year, if the handicap was around 10, that would be a bit of a miracle, so right now I'm just focusing on breaking 85 with no three-putts.

Quick aside for you MGS pros around here - I see a lot of you have "Donor" and "broke 70/80/90" banners - are those accessible to anyone? I donated earlier this year (so grateful I've found this site/community), and now that I've broken 90, would love to yell it AS LOUDLY AS POSSIBLE 😉

Let me know?

Feeling like my game is really close. Had some recent rounds scoring 75 and 73, but followed up with an 82. The sole issue being the swing just didnt feel right. Still trying to add more rotation and getting more athletic, but I need to hone in that feel and get more consistent with it. More and more practice. I suppose the goal being to own my swing, and on the course to not shoot over 80.

My overall main goal this year is to drop into the single digits for handicap.  I ended last year at a 10 and that was with not being able to find a fairway to save my life!  I went through some pretty big swing changes a few months after my driver fitting, so the shaft didn't fit me at all.  I was able to correct that this year and got the new Callaway Rogue ST Max w/Graphite Design Tour AD TP shaft in it.  The fitting went great and I'm already seeing the benefits!  To help play more, I joined a Monday night 9-hole league at a local course.  It's really helped me shake off the rust from the off season and I'll hopefully be up to form a lot quicker this year.

I want to get my handicap to the single digits. Slowing down and thinking about each shot is my biggest issue. I love running (literally - I run with my push cart) through an open course but my scores suffer. Consistency is getting there but I'm still working out the kinks with my driver and I need more precision with my short game/approach shots.

I started playing in earnest during 2020 and after lessons and really working on my swing this past winter, I want to break 90 for the first time with the stretch goal of breaking 90 at three different courses. My swing and game are capable of it, but I struggle to (as most people trying to break 90) mitigate the damage from blow-ups. Starting this weekend, I'm trying to be a lot more thoughtful with my tee shots instead of pulling driver anytime I'm on a par 4 or 5 without an obvious forced layup. Fingers crossed this is a winning strategy!
