Golfers Elbow?

Recommended Posts

Played ten holes the other day and around the fifth hole, I started smashing my drives 280 (usually around 240).

im right handed and the inside of my right elbow started hurting. Two days later, it still hurts from the inside of the right elbow almost to the middle area. Doesn’t hurt to flex my wrist or bend my fingers, but it kills to straighten my arm.

what’s the cause of golfers elbow? I read it can be poor form, but I’m assuming something must have been right with my form given my consistent distance and accuracy that day.

Normally if I get sore from golf it’s my left shoulder from bending my left arm too much across my chest, so this pain is new. Just curious what I might have done during my swing to cause the injury, like maybe inadvertently flipping my wrists and not realizing it.

I think part of what causes golfer’s elbow is lack of strength in muscles and tendons having to do with the wrist itself. I know that there are stretching exercises on YouTube that’ll help develop tendons so it’ll relieve the pain now and prevent the injury later. I suppose topicals like IcyHot or Ipren will help relieve the pain as well, since it’ll reduce inflammation.

For what it’s worth, when I got golfer’s elbow in my leading arm, I started doing the stretches and weight exercises, and I took it easy and used a compression sleeve on the driving range. It’s not a quick process, but it’s much better now.

Poor form doesn’t always lead to inconsistencies or even lack of distance. If our bodies can compensate properly and time up the swing we can see good results.

As to what’s causing it it could be how you are gripping the club, how your wrist and hands are working in the swing. Could also be from weak or tight forearms. Could also be that you are at the point where how you swing, grip, move your hands has finally got to the point of being a problem.

Things to consider. Stretch and strengthen your forearm, have someone look at your swing to make sure it’s not the cause.

Golfers elbow got me bad last year. Switched my irons to graphite shafts and wore a compression sleeve for the rest of the year. Still get a little tender if i play more than 36 in a day or 4 rounds in a week but amazingly better and more than manageable. This is the one i settled on.

That's the one I picked up too.  It doesn't slide and it provides the right amount of support.

A very good listen for golfers elbow is on Fit For Golf podcast episode 29 with Keith Baar. Golfers and Tennis elbow. This is very informative and good information to help overcome both conditions. Hope this helps.

I picked up the same one last summer and it really helps.  Icing the elbow after the round helps a lot also.

I have tennis elbow, from playing a lot of golf, and wearing a garden variety elbow brace like those at any CVS has worked for me when I play golf. A PT friend also suggested I wear a carpal tunnel brace while sleeping to keep my wrist straight - to my surprise that definitely helped. I haven't gotten rid of my tennis elbow, but it's VERY slowly getting better as long as I wear the elbow brace when I play.

It does make your arm look funny, with an untanned band just below your elbow… 😉

Although there is no scientifically proven preventative program, most clinicians agree that optimizing strength, flexibility, equipment, and technique in combination with avoiding overuse can potentially prevent the development of Golfer’s elbow. Components may include preventative elbow muscle stretching and strengthening exercises, appropriate pre-activity warm-up, working with a qualified professional to ensure proper equipment fit and technique, and knowing when to rest. In some cases, individuals may benefit from total body conditioning to minimize elbow stress during sports, occupation, or daily life activities. Mayo Clinic
