Opinions on purchasing Demo clubs

Good morning players,

Newbie golfer here. Just purchased an Apex 21 3Hybrid from Callaway Pre-owned listed as Like New condition at a solid discount. I previously bought a Mavrik Driver and 3 wood from them in Like New condition and they were perfect, still had plastic on the face / head and everything basically brand new.

Upon opening this hybrid up I noticed DEMO printed into the top of the grip. The face and everything looks clean, no scratches or ball marks that are concerning. I have never used demo clubs before, I know the local shop I've been to will put tape on the face of clubs that you pull off of the rack in order to limit markings but not so sure about how demo clubs work.
In simplest terms I'm slightly concerned that the club could have been hit a thousand times but still look super nice since it was taped up the whole time. I could also be being a diva and if they typically don't tape demo clubs maybe it was actually barely used. Customer service didn't really give me much of an answer and I have the option to return it but figured I'd consult the community before going through the hassle of return shipping and all that jazz.

Overall, what's your opinions on purchasing and gaming clubs that were previously demo clubs?

Many OEMs provide retailer fitting carts that have demo clubs that allow players to swing clubs without requiring tape.   You Could have a club that was never sent out, a club that has a grip that was put on that has demo, or a shaft/grip that was a demo.
no matter which it is, you have a club head that looks like it has never been hit.  Even if it had been hit you should have little to no concern.

I've purchased a few Mavrik Max woods off Callaway's pre-owned site, and they have come in looking exactly like that.  Nearly new head, with a slightly grubby grip marked demo.  There is a fair chance that hybrid sat on the demo rack and was grabbed a few hundred times, given the old waggle test, and never touched a ball.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have bought quite a bit through them. Clubs always seem to be in better condition when they arrive compared to what they are listed as. I’d have zero issues with gaming a demo club, especially if it saved me some money!
