Upper Peninsula Michigan Golf Course

Recommended Posts

Every other summer my family heads up to the UP in Michigan to stay with my wives family for a week or 2. Its a really cool place to take younger kids cause there is absolutely nothing to do but play outside and it doesn't get dark until 9:30pm. They are members of a local sport club that has a fun 9 hole track just over 3,000 yards which is fun to play and get the kids out on the course. All that being said I feel like there could be some hidden gems in the UP and I have never explored any other golf courses up there. Our cabin is near Naubinway which is on the East side of the peninsula, about 45 mins from the Mackinaw Bridge. If anyone is familiar with the area I would love to try and get out to a new course this summer and see what else there is to offer. Any help would be appreciated.

I personally have no idea but our resident UP expert @GolfSpy MPR might have some good options.

Not much going on in Naubinway. I recommend going south of the bridge and play Hidden River.  There are also a couple on the Island. And Drummond Island has one course that I’ve always wanted to play. Escanaba has a few nice courses.

Newberry has a course, and Brimley has a few.

Other than that I would bring a fly rod, a good book, and a coffee mug and just enjoy the UP.

That is typically what we do.  Id prefer not to go back across the bridge but would like to make a day trip somewhere.  I'll check those out, thanks for the suggestions.

No problem.  Hidden River is worth the drive, there is a restaurant there.  Plus it’s not far from Mackinaw City, could spend half and half.

I played in Marquette last summer at Greywalls and the course has some of the most spectacular views.  Check it out.

I can't much more to what @Shankster contributed. The reality is that I live on the complete opposite end of the UP from what @DeBartola_B is asking about: he'd have to drive another 4+ west to get to my side of the Upper Peninsula.

Thanks for the responses... Coming from Atlanta we typically fly into Grand Rapids and Drive up or fly into Sault Saint Marie on the Canadian border, but I'd like to fly into Green Bay and drive the other way a time or 2.  Would be a much easier decision with a nice track to try out.

I was born and raised in Iron Mountain. For a 2 hour drive from Naubinway you can play Sweetgrass and Sage Run at Island resort and casino. Both are really nice courses. If you fly into Green Bay stop in Iron Mountain and play Timberstone. It’s cut right thru the woods on the same side as the ski hill. Incredible views with high probability of seeing plenty of wildlife.

So it's 2 hours east, but the one someone else mentioned on Drummond is Fun. I havent been there in a long time but I used to live up there, and worked there as a kid.

But the island is fun and you might want to do an overnight there. There is also a municipal course that is... interesting and fun... and is on/at an airport.

You could also fly into Traverse City or Pellston.  Marquette has an airport too.

Travserse City has a TON of good golf nearby.

Pellston is like 5 miles from Hidden River.

Marquette (airport) is about 20 minutes from GreyWalls.  It’s a fun course, but man if it doesn’t kick your behind.

I go with a group of guys every July to the UP.  We play Sweetgrass which is in Harris, Greywalls which is in Marquette and has some fantastic views and a pretty unique layout, and Timberstone which I think is somewhere like Iron Mountain (I could be wrong on that).

Try the Newberry GC if you're in that area.  Not long by any stretch, but there are some interesting holes.

Out of all of those, Sweetgrass is my favorite.  I haven’t played Tiberstone or whatever it is called.  They used to, might still play a Ladies pro tourney there, and maybe a Champions tour a few years back. Sage Run wasn’t done while I was there, but it looks to be better than Sweetgrass.

Newberry CC is like 15 minutes away, and they have the nearest grocery store from us.  A 5 hour milk and eggs run sounds like a plan.

After reading all these I think I will drive back over the bridge and check out Hidden River.  The course looks great on their website.
