moving to miami fl … golf suggestions please!

moving from california to miami fl in a few months. i know florida has great golf but miami doesn’t seem to have as many options as other parts of the state. i’d love to hear some suggestions for finding great golf that’s not super expensive for regular play purposes. especially looking for good practice areas not connected to a country club. if I have to, i’ll consider a country club if they are golf focused and don’t come with status symbol member fees. thanks for any input.

I'm on the other coast of Florida but have family and friends stretching from Palm Beach Gardens to Port St. Lucie.  The golf there is great and very affordable.  Do you have to be in Miami proper?  If you can commute and be about half an hour to an hour north there are almost limitless options.

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

I lived in Jupiter for 9 years and played plenty up the SE coast.

In Miami, Miccosukee is probably one of the better public options.

There are plenty more if you head north into Lauderdale and Deerfield Beach.

PM me if you have any questions and safe travels.

my partner is took a job in miami near University Park, so i would like her commute to be as short as possible. but that definitely limits our housing options. we are looking in broward country as well, as that area seems to have a lot more cool outdoor activities available, including golf, which fits our lifestyle. so we’ll just have to see how the housing search goes. thanks for the information.

When you're checking out various communities to live, look into the municipal courses that might be available.  For example, Plantation (about 30 miles from Miami and just off the highway) has a great course, Plantation Preserve Golf Course that has discounts for town residents (per round and annual memberships).  I've played it and it's a very nice course.

Looks nice. Also jacaranda next door. Even though we’ll probably be south of that, because it’s on the highway it’s a reasonable amount  of time in the car. Thanks! At some point I may need some key west recommendations from you as well. I was there as a child but that was almost 30 years ago. Can’t wait to drive those ocean bridges again.

I've played both.  Jacaranda is semi-private, but you can get on it.  I think they have two courses available there.  As far as Key West goes, let me know.   Here the golf is somewhat limited.  One course on the next key up.  It's a Ree Jones course that's very narrow, has small greens with false fronts and wind conditions often make the course challenging.  Message me when you get settled and I'll send you a bunch of recommendations.  I hope the move goes well!

I used to live right on the Broward Dade Border in Miramar before moving North into Palm Beach County. I used to play Miami Lakes Golf Club (aka Shula's) https://www.miamilakesgolf.com/, Country Club of Miami http://golfccmiami.com/ (Jackie Gleason used to own a 9,000 sqft house on this course), Grand Palms Resort in Pembroke Pines https://www.grandpalmsresort.com/. I haven't played there in years so not sure what the courses are like now. I think Plantation Preserve and Jacaranda are nice but over priced for what they are. Over by Ft Lauderdale airport there is Davie Golf Club https://www.daviegolf.net/ and the Club at Emerald Hills https://www.theclubatemeraldhills.com/ which has some great views of the Hard Rock Guitar hotel and is one of the longest courses down here playing 7800 yds from the tips! And if you can somehow find a hookup, Grande Oaks (private) is where Caddyshack was filmed https://www.grandeoaks.com/!

North Broward I typically play TPC Eagle Trace in Coral Springs (used to play the Honda Classic there in the late 80s) https://eagletrace.clublink.com/. One of the best value courses and hidden gems in Broward County is Woodmont Country Club in Tamarac https://woodmontcountryclub.net/

My home track right by where I live in Boca Raton is probably one of the best public courses in all of South Florida, Osprey Point which has 3 9s. https://www.pbcospreypointgolf.com/

Feel free to message me when you get into South Florida. Maybe we can get a game setup.

+1 on that. Miccousukee (name has changed twice over) is my childhood course and grew up not too far from there. It’s a 27-hole course and its hosted a couple Nationwide events in the past.

I will say, there are iguanas 🦎 EVERYWHERE! 😆 Drove down last summer to visit family, played Miccousukee and was shocked by the amount of invasion iguanas there, and at so many of the other greater Miami golf courses.

Palmetto is a nice Muni and has a great men’s league that’s well organized and competitive. A few others nearby  Palmetto is Killian Greens and a par 3 course called Briar Bay, both are serviceable.

Key Biscayne has a Muni as well that’s hosted a few Champions Tour events back in the day.

Blue Monster at Doral is always a treat.

And lastly, I’ll add Granada, which is a great 9-holer and just down the street is Biltmore, which I’d imagine is quite pricey now.

nice. looking forward to the local wildlife if not the mosquitoes. those miccosukee fairways seem to average about half the width i’m used to, so I’m sure it will be a good place for me to get better at target golf. Thanks for the ideas. Can’t wait to check some of these places out.

I definitely have not yet adapted to this heat and humidity. whew! crossing my fingers no heart attacks in my first couple months in Dade county. wow. also, had a huge frog in my toilet my second day here, which honestly, was one of the biggest “jump scares” i’ve ever had in life. I was in shock and complaining about it and my girlfriend already had it in a tupperware and out into the pond across the street. Not sure how long it’s gonna take me to get comfortable to golf. Golf is enough mental stress already without actually trying to survive as well. Cress Creek and the Peninsula have made me soft.

Have you never heard of the Doral Club? When it comes to playing Doral Golf, there is no more popular course than the Blue Monster. Designed by golf course architect Gil Hans, this 7,590-yard course is filled with strategically placed bunkers, fairways, and green spaces.  His infamous 18th hole is considered one of the most difficult. By the way, during the move, the most important thing is not to lose any things. I advise you to contact the company https://acelinemoving.com so as not to waste your strength and nerves on it.  Good luck!

so, on the moving, we negotiated a few extra thousand over the company’s max for moving expenses since we were moving from the bay area ca, and we still had to move ourselves in a penske truck. had our catalytic converter stolen in bakersfield ca, just like in a country song. it was an adventure.  but, we lost very little.

as far as doral, it is the second closest course to where we are now. i may play it at some point, but at $495 currently I’m just not comfortable at that number. If i’m spending in that area I want to play pebble.

I got fit for some vokey’s at plantation preserve a couple weeks ago, and that looks like a really nice complex and I hope to be back to play a round soon.

Somewhat north from you, but Del Ray Golf Club stood out when I visited my father a couple years ago. He's more in the West Palm area.

I thought it was in great shape and not breaking the budget with the fees or the restaurant.

My wife and I have been kicking around the idea of getting away from cold weather winters and moving to Florida at some point in the future. Of course, golf is a top priority for me so I'm just trying to find that perfect mix of good schools (we have a 5 year old), reasonable housing prices, great golf courses at a reasonable price (thinking nice semi-private style courses). Coming from Kansas City, I really do love the big city, small town feel but not opposed to something different. Any suggestions?

taking your list in order:

miami dade county, and south florida generally, may not be the place for you. florida has dismantled their public education system, and the public schools are still better than the private voucher schools that many send their kids to. if you’re wealthy, there are high end private schools here but that’s the same anywhere. housing prices are terrible. there are many problems with the housing, but it’s mostly a supply/demand problem. this area is on par with new york and LA in terms of cost, and worse than the bay area which I moved here from. if you’re coming here, you have to either be wealthy, or have a good reason. you pay more, you get less. you also need to speak spanish to converse with most people, as spanish is the main language here, not english. many people here know only spanish.  lastly, there are very few golf courses in miami dade. there are a few, but land is so valuable here that there aren’t many. also, given how bad the traffic is, it isn’t easy to travel to golf. as you move north towards jupiter, the quality and number of golf courses increase, but the prices stay high and many of the best courses are private. there are a few gems, for sure, as you move north, but traffic has kept me from exploring as much as I would like. once again, many pga tour players live in jupiter, so, if you are wealthy, jupiter, which is 2 hours north of miami dade by car, is one of the best areas on earth for golf, but if you’re not, many of the best courses are private so it’s a different life being a player who has access to the private courses vs a player who does not.

this info is about miami dade. you may find tampa bay or orlando to be more of what you’re looking for, but I haven’t set foot in either of those places in the almost 2 years that i’ve been in dade county.

also, the weather here makes golf impossible for much of the year, unless you tee off within a half hour of course opening. as someone who worked on a family farm growing up in pennsylvania, i’m used to, or at least i can handle, temps in the 90’s no problem. however in miami dade, the temp is often 88 feels like 110, which for me is impossible to golf in. i’ve forced myself to do it, and i’ve survived, but it isn’t fun.

this info is about miami dade. you may find tampa bay or orlando to be more of what you’re looking for kontorflytting, but I haven’t set foot in either of those places in the almost 2 years that i’ve been in dade county.

also, the weather here makes golf impossible for much of the year, unless you tee off within a half hour of course opening. as someone who worked on a family farm growing up in pennsylvania, i’m used to, or at least i can handle, temps in the 90’s no problem. however in miami dade, the temp is often 88 feels like 110, which for me is impossible to golf in. i’ve forced myself to do it, and i’ve survived, but it isn’t fun.

I'd love any suggestions for moving companies for a West Coast move.  Not a huge amount of stuff...a one bedroom plus small office.
