What club in your bag is giving you hell right now?

Recommended Posts

I'll start. My dreaded 50º... I can't seem to hit it without flipping (on the course) no matter how hard I try not to. It is about to drive me insane... I'm thinking of putting it in time out for a few rounds.

Hate yourself, not the game...

My six iron is giving me fits.  I'm chunking the heck out of every shot and if not I weakly pull it it hard left.  Also thinking about shelving it, either for my other set's six or the other short shafted hybrid I have.

54* wedge.  Try to use it for finesse shots around the green and it is just too inconsistent.  Starting to get a mental block when hitting longer shots; just wonder if I am going to hit a poor shot.   Might need to put it in timeout and try another 54* that I have lying around.

None?

I’m wary of my 60º but then it’s because I don’t need it often and therefore don’t practice with it - not giving me hell per se. Always concerned about blading it, so I sometimes chunk it to compensate. 😬 My 56º has too much bounce (by choice) for anyplace other than sand.

I’m not as straight as I’d like, so on tight holes I’m also a little wary of my driver off the tee or my 3W and 3H - again, not giving me hell exactly. I will lay up a little more often than some of my regular playing partners - most like to hit driver no matter what. There’s a short par 4 on my home course that I tee off with my 4 iron because it’s so narrow - a miss left is a lost ball period (very steep downhill slope high weeds), a miss right is side uphill in ankle to knee high weeds IF you find it. I have never hit driver on that hole even though I could easily reach the green…

Fortunately my putter and I get along well most days, but some days it’s in a foul mood. 🤨

Hands dow, its my driver. If I wasn't so stubborn I would have replaced it by now. I could always depend on it and was consistant with a miss. Now I am not sure if it will go straight or straight left or cut into the night sky. it will be something I will need to look into replacing next year as my golf budget is all greens fees for the rest of this year.

Putter for me. More of a consistency thing. Can have a solid round of making some putts, but that is followed closely by rounds of bad putting overall. I’ve always played the blade, but am reading into some mallet options. We will see.

I may have to look into the fairway woods.  As for the "for old men" part, unfortunately there is a lot more going on in my body that make me look/feel old than just a couple of clubs in my golf bag. 😉

I force myself to carry and use a hybrid between my 3W and 4i, even though I've never liked it. I certainly get some good shots with it, but it's never been as reliable for me as a long iron - probably because my formative years in golf there was no such thing as a hybrid...

100%!  And I believe it doesn’t need to be carrying an “alternative” club.

I own own a 4 wood that is too unpredictable for the course so I leave it at home. I find that I play better (and with less stress) bunting 7 irons instead of risking recovery shots.

I do not like hybrids either. I did get a seven wood which I think is okay and not so "Old Manny." I like it but I tend to prefer my three iron. I ended up not using it as much as I thought I would so it basically just sits in my golf room most of the time.

I gave up my 7 wood as it was spinning so much and carried the same as my 4 hybrid.  I wasn’t fond of hybrids as I tried to hit them like an iron with a descending strike and it wasn’t good.  When I started trying to just swing them flush/sweep it changed everything.  I now have a 3,4 and recent add of a 5.  They stay on the line intended.  It has me wondering about shorter fairway shafts as the hybrid shaft being shorter definitely improved things vs longer fairways.

6 iron.  Why do those 4 little degrees of loft from a 7 iron make it such a different animal to hit?  Either its a toe - short and right, or a fat short and left.  Leaves me a huge gap between the 7 iron and my 5 hybrid that seems to be exactly where every par 3 at my course, and most of my approach shots on par 4's play from.  As much practice as I get with it "on course" you would think I could learn to hit it.

Now I know we are twins. I went through that last year with my 6 iron. everything was fine except for the 6 iron. All four of my courses par 3's require a 6 iron. They are different yardages but play differently due to elevation changes which all require a 6 iron. I spent 2 weeks of range time with a 6 iron in my hand until I got it worked out. I hate the range but it was necessary.  Figuring out the 6 iron was  my only hope of getting out of the Aceless thread.  And I'm still trying to get out!

My brother from another mother, Tom!  Yes, my course's par 3's are different yardages as well... but offset almost exactly by the prevailing wind, or "strategic" pin placement front to back.  It has gotten to the point that I can walk to all 4 tees without looking at my gps or rangefinder with my 6 iron, LW, and Putter and tell my playing partner to meet me at the green. 🙃  My next visit to the range will be with one club...  I will learn to hit that thing just as you have!

I guess I need to search for the "Aceless" thread... I think I could have been a charter member and still in good standing!

Same here. I would love to have one flight and be able to aim down one side of the fairway and have the entire landing zone but, instead, I have to aim down the middle to compensate for my misses. In practice I tend it to hit a slight fade with a center strike but my miss is out on the toe (hello hook) or if I heel it a bit obviously it fades more. I have started to hit my 5 wood more and more (I don't carry a 3 wood anymore) and it manages my misses much better for a variety of reasons. Just stinks to not be able to pull driver but that is the state of my game right now.

I trimmed my 5 wood shaft an inch so it is more like a 9 wood shaft and I love it. I fiddled around with gripping down for a few rounds to make sure I was comfortable with it. I lost very little clubhead speed and distance and, naturally, had a more consistent strike. Again, try gripping down at first but as a guy with a long torso and long arms it makes sense that I might like a shorter shaft.
