My new favorite grip

Recommended Posts

I've been a MCC +4 user for several years and had no intention of switching til I got a Dick's gift card. I typically order my grips from golfworks, so there is never any 'window shopping'. With the gift card I decided to stop by Dicks and get a few MCC+4's. But then I spotted some new GP CPX. They seemed to have a soft but grippier surface so I ended up buying 2 to put on the long end of my bag since I never choke down on those clubs and don't need the 'less tapered' fit of the MCC+4's. .Early indications are I love this grip. Worse yet, my wife loves the grip so now I have to change out 2 bags 😱. I did end up using 3 layers of tape, since with a XL size glove I'm between a midsize and jumbo grip but also trying to compensate for GP's 'marketing' equivalent +4's = 4 layers of tape. For those concerned about the difference in the dimension see the photos below of the dimensional difference on my driver. Note the MCC +4 had 2 layers of tape.

MCC +4 with 2 layers of tape measured at 5" .  Oh and yes I know this grip is a bit worn - that's why I was replacing it 😁

Also the butt end of the CPX, like the  MCC line is flat so the SS sensors fit flat against it.  AND as an  added bonus they're less expensive than the +4's

I've been thinking about trying the CPX grips the next time I'm due for a change.  I was using the CP2 Pro on most of my clubs, have a few MCC grips left on a couple of clubs and just swapped out three of the Velvet Tour Plus 4 grips.  I like the idea of the CPX, especially the size and the fact I don't wear a glove.

I'd be interested to get your impressions after getting it out on the course.

I should have added that I don't wear a glove as well - hence the added tape.

I ALMOST switched to this grip from the +4's for my recent shaft upgrade... but chose to go with the +4 as tried and true.  I will definitely keep these on the radar for my next grip change.

I like a soft grip (arthritis), so I was interested in what Golf Pride advertised as their softest grip ever. Golf Galaxy didn't have them mounted to really feel what they were like, but I took a chance and bought a set. I have a few left if you want them. I really don't like them! Surprisingly, my new favorite is Super Stroke traxion.

Thanks for the offer - that was nice of you. Unfortunate I already purchased two sets (both bags)  from Golfworks. Hope the Traxion works well or you.

How have the CPX's durability held up?  I am thinking about making the switch and for some reason they feel to me that they will wear down quickly

I tried the CPX and really liked the feel initially, but all of the surface textures felt weird after a while. I've been using the GP Microsuede in mid-size and so far am very happy with feel, comfort and grip in this horribly humid weather.

See the attached update. As mentioned I have it on my 5 wood as well and haven't experienced the same issue. So I don't know if this is a one off issue which BTW hasn't gotten worse.

I'm with you on the Traxion, very nice, very soft grip.  And affordable.

I've tried a number of grips over the last two years.  I definitely prefer a softer grip over a cord grip.  Can't get along with any wraps.  The Winn Dritac isn't bad, but my two favorites are golfpride CP2 pro, and the Lamkin Sonar+.  The Lamkin has the perfect balance of softness without ever feeling mushy.

I have been a CP2 fan for years, so I was very curious and put a CPX on one of my new hybrids. After a few rounds I'm still undecided, its definitely a unique feeling grip.

Couldn't agree more here. I threw CPX on my irons rons, CP2 Pros (grip down for the alignment line) on my driver, 3W, and wedges, and Sonar+ on my Hybrids just to be able to compare all three. So far the CP2 Pro and the Lamkin Sonar+ are far and away my preference over the CPX, with a slight preference for the Sonar+. Honestly, I might just pick the grip per club that better matches the shaft as performance on both has been similar.

CPX was cool to try, but I will never regrip with them again. The tackiness was gone after 2 rounds and even a soapy scrub doesn't bring it back like it does on other grips. They also encourage a weird hand placement for me that has thrown my iron play into an even worse place than it had been.

I'm a big fan of the new softer compounds that Lamkin and GP have been coming out with the last few years. They offer good performance, comfort, and so far, appear to offer reasonable durability. I'm due for a regrip and I'm struggling on what to get. I currently have Winn Dritacs and those are okay but I can barely get through a season before they start falling apart. I'm stuck between going with the softer rubber like CP2s or getting the Star/Pure grips. I like golfing without a glove, so how grip and feel is important. I don't mind the multicompounds but they are a touch pricey, a little firm, and I've trouble with grip when things start getting even a little damp or humid.
