What are your thoughts on bucket hats?  The sun protection is very appealing but are they just too much Spaulding Smails?

I'm actually thinking of picking up a few. My 16yo and his friends rock 'em all the time, he wears them on the course and it's a smart thing to do.

It depends on what you call a bucket hat. This hat is listed as a bucket. I wet it an wear it and it's a lot cooler in the heat.

... Exactly. I never really understood the appeal of bucket hats. Brim is too short to protect your skin or shield your eyes from the sun. But sun hats with wide brims are an absolute necessity in very sunny and hot locations. If I am in bright sunlight with temps above 100 and I remove my hat to wipe my brow, it seems instantly about 10* hotter since it works like a mini umbrella.

I’ve contemplated this as well. The larger brim almost seems like a necessity on the hot sunny days. I look at them almost every time I’m in a sporting goods store but have yet to find one that tickles my fancy.

I'm a big fan of my Dakine No Zone bucket hat. Not quite as much brim as what @chisag is rocking, but it has enough for me. Stiffer brim in the front and back and softer on the sides, along with the mesh back for venting, makes it work great for me.

I've tried using my Simms hat that I almost always wear while fly fishing and sometimes golfing but, when it's windy, I don't like the flopping brim.

image.png.c237a4203e960ec8be88065cf5717fe8.png

I love the look of the Kirk Triplett hat but these exact hats are, by all accounts, not available to the public.  Also, I suspect those brims flop around too on windy days. I stumbled on this review and this design looks to address "the floppy's".  I've not pulled the trigger on one as yet but it's on my short list.

Ultimately, don't let style and vanity win the day on protecting yourself from the sun.  I use 70+SPF pretty reliably but have still had pre-cancerous areas burned on the top of my ears and cheeks.  It's one of the additive processes that eventually catches up later in life.  When we're young we're invincible... or so we think.

It sounds like they should have listened so they could have enjoyed more than their first day of vacation. After that, it's all about staying in your room being miserable.

Unfortunately everyone has to learn and so many of us seem to have to figure out things like sunburn on our own. Good on you for trying.

Yeah, as a hotel lifeguard in FL back in the 80's.  I would work weekends during from Nov thru April and all the Pasties and Lilies would make their annual migration from the cold confines of the north down to the land of Mickey for their winter retreat or their winter migration.  You could always tell the new arrivals by their pasty or lily white skin as they would come down to the pool to relax before the attraction trips began.  We would tell them all to please put on some skin protection but they would do one of two things.  The first group would say they don't need any, its December and only in the high 70s plus they never burn. They would look like lobsters by the time they went in.  The second group were the sun worshippers and instead of putting on sun block they would put sun tan lotion (or as we called it sun burn lotion) and they would just burn faster, kinds like putting oil in a skillet and turning up the heat.  Do you know how miserable it is to have to strap into a ride when it is pressing against your burn shoulders?

As a fashion statement no, as a functional necessity in extreme weather then a maybe. In the UK, hardly ever see one. I'm a hats off guy. I only wear a cap to keep the rain off my glasses, a visor occasional in strong sunlight, bobble hat in cold and a bucket in persistent rain once my cap is soaked thru.

**** the fashion statement lol

I'm a golfer, about to hit the 40's, out of shape... you think I care about fashion? 😄

On a serious note, I've started to wear them everywhere, not just the golf course... biking with the kids, doing garden work, grilling on the terrace, etc... got 3 spots removed from my back last year what could have been skin cancer, not going to risk it...

I played early Monday and it was fine. I played late Wednesday and it was HOT here in GA. I usually walk my home course, but Wednesday I took a cart. I figured out last year 90 degrees is my limit for walking. I wet my hat when I could and it helps keep me cool.

Tips of my ears sunburn quickly so once the UV index starts getting into my danger zone I use bucket hats.  Mostly use a Field and Stream hat from the fishing section at Dick's; in high heat I use a Mission Cooling bucket hat.

Personally I really Like the Titleist Aussie hats and have worn them for a number of years with good results.  The white ones do get a little dirty, but I just spray a little shout on them and put them in the top of the dishwasher and as they say, "shout it away".  Place them on a towel and let them dry.  Have them in grey, khaki, white/blue, white/aqua, white/black.  Picked up two of the new Charleston Aussie hats from this years line which are much lighter white/black and white/grey.  They also fit those who have a larger head better than the regular Aussie hats.  Here in Charleston, SC the heat index is already hitting over 110 these are a must.  Makes my dermatologist very happy and me too.  Here are the new ones I recently picked up.

I bought a couple of "bucket" hats and, unless they're vented, I find them much too hot. I found a "boonie/bucket" hat and it's well ventilated and very comfortable. If anyone out there knows of a good quality vented bucket hat please let me know where you got it/them.
