I think the R&A needs to re-think having St. Andrews host the Open so frequently. The Old Course seems a beautiful setting but just isn't holding up to modern equipment to be a special challenge for one of the top golf events in the world. There are way too many holes that are putts or chips/little pitch shots on the second shot. And the criss-cross holes making the rounds head toward 6 hours don't help. Maybe they re-think the set-up and make the rough more difficult for drives that miss the fairways, but as an elite championship test, St. Andrews is showing its weaknesses.

Not disputing some of your points but the chances of not playing there or any significant layout changes are low... really low.  way too much history and heritage. Keep in mind that weather is this courses biggest defense, and it did not show up this year.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Open this year, regardless of score relative to par. I found it more enjoyable of a watch than last year's and it still comes down to who can navigate the course the best through 4 days. Even if it was a "wedge fest" I found the final round compelling stuff.

Rough doesn't help the distance issue. It only punishes shorter hitters and rewards bombers. Easier to hit out of rough with a wedge than a 6 iron. I think the lack of wind Sat/Sun hurt the course more than setup.

The thicker fescue rough would definitely affect shots. As the course is now, it rarely made any difference.

Agreed, which is why I said they should return less frequently. Maybe once every ten years instead of five.

Let the wind blow. Had the perfect (lack of) storm this week. It could’ve been a lot different. You & I both know they’ll never skip St Andrews nor “trick it up” any more than they tried this week with hole locations.

If you don't care about tradition, might make sense to skip the "home of golf." The wind didn't blow this week like normal, so that made it a little easier, but there were plenty of challenges between pot bunkers, crazy slopes (you can't get near many of the pins) and odd bounces. Some of the holes play short for sure (like many other courses) but I thought it was very refreshing to see something different one major/tournament per year instead of one parkland course after another. And it seems the pros themselves like St Andrews for a variety of reasons - appears to be one of the most coveted wins for any resume. Every 5 or so years doesn't seem "so frequent." YMMV

The balance is between tradition and being an adequate challenge. They haven't played at Prestwick in almost 100 years, which was the origin course of the Open.

There really weren't plenty of challenges. -20 won and sixteen players came in at -10 or better. The players were playing their second shots with putters, chips or soft wedges on almost half the holes. I don't see that as refreshing at all.

Who said anything about moving to a parkland course? All the Open rota courses are links courses. Most of them also provide a sterner challenge and more variety of required shotmaking.

St. Andrews is at this point a novelty. It's a beautiful setting and the ambience and history are wonderful. The closing holes are great. But modern equipment has made the overall course suboptimal for one of the world's premier golf championships.

We disagree, surprise. I enjoyed it, you didn’t. No one including me said anything about moving to a parkland course, you missed my point entirely. It could be argued a lot of older courses have become “suboptimal” - yet they still attract big audiences.

Quote

The 150th Open at St Andrews will be the largest in the Championship’s long history, with a record-breaking 290,000 fans set to attend at the world-renowned Old Course from 10-17 July.

Unprecedented demand to attend this historic milestone for The Open led to more than 1.3 million applications in the ticket ballot and has resulted in the highest-ever number of general admission tickets being issued to fans. The attendance surpasses the previous high mark set at St Andrews in 2000 when 239,000 spectators watched Tiger Woods lift the Claret Jug for the first time.

XXXX. Yes, the beer of Queensland (Cam's home state) is called four X. They call it that because Queenslanders can't spell beer.

According to the after party article I read, they drank Birra Moretti; Italian. I suppose it’s what they could get on short notice at the Old Course Hotel. 🍺

Probably because they picked the most expensive beer available.  🤑

Seriously?  After bagging The Open win, in a town full of taps with all sorts of yummy local and regional options, he opted for that swill?  Even if he wanted to party at the hotel, he could have found someone to deliver some growlers. Never had an Italian beer I liked...but then for me, it's not about what I'm seen drinking but what I like drinking...ymmv. 🤮

And Fosters isn't Australian beer anymore. Nobody drinks it here.
