What golf ball are you using these days?

Recommended Posts

Curious to hear what golf balls people are playing these days. I'm a notorious practice ball player, so I tend to use 2019 TP5/TP5x practice balls I get on either GolfDiscount or Amazon. But I've used a lot this year trying to find one I consistently like.

My notes so far this year:

  • Chromesofts are too, um, soft
  • Chromesoft X LS are a bit too hard and I don't notice any real difference in spin off the driver vs. Chromesoft X.
  • TP5/TP5x are my favorite, as discussed above, but I'd like to try some newer generations and can't bring myself to pay $50 for a dozen.
  • Vice Pro Plus were ok. Didn't notice any big differences vs. TP5s but they're not as durable in my experience
  • Always have like ProV1s but I can't find practice/X-out versions anymore and i'm not paying $50 for a dozen.

I'm planning on trying Maxfli Tour's next and hoping those can be my ball moving forward because the performance and quality seem right in line with other premium tour balls, but at a much better price point. And they're on sale all the time.

What do you guys play consistently?

Kirkland Sig V2s.

I'm not a good enough golfer to justify spending more than a dollar per ball and the fact that I don't care about losing a ball takes so much pressure off of me during my swing. Plus, the best part of my game is 115 yards and in, so I like having a bit more spinny of a ball that I can work and control.

ProV1 for special occasions (the warden gives them to me as gifts on special occasions), and MaxFli Tours most of the time (what I buy). MaxFli Tour is a great ball value IME - I'd be fine using it exclusively.

And I used to lose 2-3 balls a round, fortunately I'm losing more like 1 per round on average these days, so my stash will last me quite a while. 😀

I was generally a Titleist Tour Soft ball player when it's cold, and then when it heats up I switched to ProV1x.  However, I was always finding and trying balls I find on the course all year long.

About a month ago I bought the Maxfli Tour X and haven't hit a different ball since.  If I find something on course, it remains in the cart when I turn it in.  Now I suspect I will have to decide if I will replace the Tour X with the Tour Soft this fall.

Normally I would say that I prefer the TP5 but, I’ve been playing ProV1 this year since I found a local guy that lives on a course and has them in abundance. Hard to pass up 2021 models that look brand new for $1 each.

I did come across a Bridgestone Tour B X a while back and used that for my last round. I think that I might just like that one too. Feel and distance were both good so I may need to do a bit more testing.

I second the Srixon XV. it is a soft feel off the face of all my clubs. Only time it doesn't is with a complete housel shot or extreme toe hit.  They stick to the green when played correctly.

Srixon Z-Star and Maxfli Tour. None of the X balls work for me in the short game and both these balls give me more distance than ProV1. And cheaper.

I've been playing the Maxfli Tour X of late.  I really like them.  Prior to going with Maxfli, Snell MTBX was my ball of choice, but because of supply issues I was exploring other options....Bridgestone RX, Srixon Vx, and Mizuno RBS.  While I liked the Bridgestone somewhat, I didn't feel it was quite right.  I was going to give Taylormade TP5X another go (ball of choice prior to Snell) and then going to reconsider Titleist Pro V1 again (While it's a great ball, EVERYONE plays them and it's too easy to hit the wrong ball when you're not paying close attention for the markings, which was my lame excuse to quit playing them 4 or 5 years ago).  In any case, I liked the Maxfli offering enough to go ahead and play it exclusively.

I'm of the camp that doesn't want to pay heavy money($3-4) for golfballs. A $1 a ball is a good price. Previously played the Maxfli Softfli, and Callaway SuperSoft. My game is not that good(25+hdcp at 65 years old))to justify the cost. So, I play the TopFlite Hammer Control Yellow. Have 4 rounds with this ball, and I am really impressed with this ball, as it plays really well. Good distance for me(80 mph swing speed)off the tee. Great manners around the greens. It's not a ProV, but my CBX2's(50,54,58) love this ball. The Dimple in Dimple cover works well with my wedges, and I can get it to check on the green, with some rollout. I allow for the runout, so distance control is critical. Not going to back up, but it will check. Feels good off the putter. This ball is the second coming of the D2 Feel. I have stocked up(4 boxes), and this ball is my gamer for this season. My game is looking better already! All of the Chicago area stores do not have any inventory of the Hammer Control Yellow. Limited inventory on the Hammer Distance. Somebody IS playing THIS ball....

I'm still burning through what I have left of the four dozen Spalding SD Tour balls I bought from Walmart for $7/dozen last year. The sad thing is that I might just buy the balls again since they are still only $18/dozen at Walmart. I find that they are long and spin is good. I've played them side by side with Pro V1s and I really couldn't perceive any noticeable difference with distance or spin. I can't say an MGS review would say they are equally good but I can't perceive any differences in my real world experience. If you're looking for a cheap tour ball, I don't know that there is a better diamond in the rough deal than the Spalding tour balls from Walmart. I would be curious to know who makes them. The box says they are made in Vietnam by a company or supplier call Reliable of Milwaukee (whoever that is).

My current gaming ball is the Kirkland V2. I am not playing great so it is cost effective option.

When I am playing to my full potential my and my wife's preferred ball is the Seed 001. To me they are the closet ball I have found that feel and perform like a Pro V1. However they are $44 vs $70 for Pro V1's.

Decided to keep playing Z Star like last year after trying Pro V1X, XV, Left Dash, Z Star Diamond, and BX. Just the right amount of spin off wedges for me, and is pretty dang long off driver. BX finished second, but it’s too low spin off driver… LONG!!!!!

For most rounds, I play the Vice Pro Plus.  Not as durable, but at 1/2 the price, they get the job done.  If you wait for the buy 5 dozen, get 1 free deal that they do a few times a year, it comes out to about $25-27/dozen after tax and shipping.

For special rounds, I'll break out a sleeve of ProV1x. Typically get a dozen for my birthday and Christmas.

Strict Pro V1 user. As hard as it is to spend $50 a dozen, the results in my opinion are worth that to me.
Played the ProV1x(PRE 2021)for years. When Titleist came out with new balls in 2021 it took some adjusting. Played the ProV1 for a bit, but wasn’t getting the feel around the greens I wanted. ProV1x is great around greens but too spinny for me off the tee. Then I found out about the PROV1x Left Dash, and that was a game changer and what I use nowadays.

There are plenty of more affordable balls on the markets, that perform great. The MyGolfSpy 2021 ball testing proves that to be true.

I played my first round with Maxfli Tour’s and I’ve got to say, wow. I loved it. The feel was soft enough, but I hit some huge drives. Bad drive hits still were pretty damn straight. Felt like the ball couldn’t get lose on a drive like a TP5x can if you miss hit it. And spin with short irons was great. Putting was nice and soft. Sank some nice putts. Only minor issue I saw was there wasn’t the kind of chipping spin I see with a TP5, but it wasn’t really an issue.

Glad I picked up two dozen. Going to go through those and then buy the box. LFG.

... Glad you like the MT! Fwiw I have found the TP5 to be one of the highest spinning balls I have played. Calm conditions and hard fast fairways the TP5 works well as long as I remember to play for a hair more spin on chips and pitches. For me at least not a very big difference but enough to be aware of when playing them.
