I have personally never played a players iron, but what I would say is that the top line is thin like a players iron but from toe to hosel is longer. I think its as close as you get to a players iron though without actually playing one.

That's good info, thank you. I typically play players irons like the JPX 921 Tour and Srixon ZX7 but I'm very intrigued by these. My worry was that they're way bigger than what I'm used to. I don't really need the distance but extra forgiveness in a smaller profile is what has me interested.

I swung the ZX7 at PGA event last winter. They are as compact if not more than those I think. Did you swing any of the 220 series of mizuno?

if it helps i can get some tape measure measurements in pictures for ya. I don’t have any MBs to do side by side with

The Forged Tec are as compact as the ZX7? That's awesome. I have a ZX5 in my 5-6 iron and then ZX7 from 7-PW. I have swung the Mizuno Pro 223, I almost went with them over the Srixon's. I actually called Cobra looking for the topline, heel to toe, and sole measurements a few days ago and they were supposed to email me the specs but never did. Definitely don't need you to go out of your way to measure them though, I'm gonna try to get to a store to try them eventually.

@GolfSpy_APH any chance I could get a review placeholder at the beginning of this? Or do you want to just have the review in the middle of the thread?

Like I said going to have a review up towards the end of May once I get some complete data and thoughts.

I am going to have my review up this weekend/beginning of next week. With Cobra testing coming I do not want to detract from that and want the information for last years model up and done!

With that I had a round today. By a landslide my best iron round with these clubs. Almost even strokes gained against a 0 HDCP. I took several videos today because I wanted to get sound of some pured and non center hits which will go into the review.

For now this was my favorite part of the day. I drew out the hole on this part 3 and executed a perfect shot and birdied. Not a scoff at par 3 either at 215 yards. The screenshot was my plan hit center left and funnel to the back pin location:

It was practically a tap in bird, about 4'. From that distance I was pretty juiced up. Made the bird. This also was not my only tap in on a part 3. Had another from 162 with an 8 iron. Many times in rounds I have had tight par 3's which has been amazing.

4ironhole15.jpg.b3e633dc30025e80db259b1023317038.jpg

I mentioned earlier I had 4 birdies today as well. 3 of them being approach shots or on a par 3 with the Cobras the other was a beauty wedge.

Again review coming up for everyone interested.

So I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that it will be a positive review...  😂

@GolfSpy_APH just wanted to tag you to pin the review

Lacassem – Cobra Forged Tec’s (2022) Review

Shout-out:

It has been a long time coming, a little over 7 months but when you get the clubs and the season is ending, it was tough to get some quality thoughts into a review. So I held off until now! I took the template for a review so I could keep it as similar as possible.

I know this was technically a giveaway but no way in hell was I going to not write something up for the generosity of COBRA (even was able to get some Instagram love out there, hopefully it made its way around and got a few people to poke into MGS). As well as a big thank you to the My Golf Spy team @GolfSpy_APH @GolfSpy_BOS and especially @Golfspy_CG2 for coordinating this. In a year where there were not to many tests Rob and company were still able to pull some things off and it does not go unnoticed as we can tell from this years boom of a testing season. From me and speaking on probably all members thank you for the work you put into the forum.

Hopefully the review does some justice for Cobra as well as gets a few folks to maybe take a look at these clubs or their brother in the Forged Tec X’s.

Who is this Lacassem?:

For anyone that does not know me my name is Mark Lacasse, father of 2 children and 2 dogs, married to a lovely lady that puts up with my shenanigans and avid golfer (not my wife just me).

Fam.png.af8187c858859623a236f81dbdbc6435.png

I have been a part of MGS for a few years. Was not very active for the first year but have since loved being on here every day, it is my social media fix with some people I would like to call internet friends. I have not met most but hopefully someday will! I have been lucky enough to test a few things (in my signature if you’re interested) as well as these most recent Forged Tec’s that QUICKLY bumped out my previous gamers as you will see.

My golf game is the best is has ever been. Consistency has been the name of the game the past year, a lot has changed, and a lot of work has been put into it. My strengths are off the tee and putting. Where I lack is approach which is hit or miss throughout the round and my short game with wedges is typically very good or very bad no in between.

Here is the bag setup with the Cobras (also in my signature). I am a super fan of the Boston region (lost my bruins towel)

Bagfront.jpg.06180cb38977d5b441ff03335e478c5a.jpgBagside.jpg.9860737fd4f48ba1e63e68432d23bc18.jpgTowels.jpg.bf1b4735219a941b3b442b4e308f6dbf.jpg

First Impressions (20 out of 20)

When it comes down to it, I love this group of club. The players distance iron for my own personal game is the best of everything. Smallish sleek look that packs a punch and they are not going to be drastically penalizing when I inevitably mishit somewhere on the face. When this opportunity arose, I was ecstatic to potentially swing something else because I was not in love with my P790’s I was fitted into a few years back.

For me I was looking for something very specific out of these clubs that I did not get with my P790’s and that was overall feel and feedback on well hit balls. I am no Tiger Woods, but I can hit the ball square fairly often and with the 790’s I felt like I never really did that. The feeling was muted and honestly pretty garbage.

Seems a little crazy to think I would get a better feeling from these Forged Tec’s because the technology related to the 790’s is similar. They both have a speed foam pocket, tungsten weighting and a few other similarities. The difference? From what I saw it is the face, two different forged steels. I will get into this when I go over feel and durability in the Aesthetics section.

Aesthetics (9 out of 10)

The clubs are beautiful. Like I said sleek and have the player look to them (I am sure some will argue this when you put them next to a true MB, but they are a compact profile). They are not overly chrome which I like. I prefer a chrome on my irons but something that isn’t blinding, these are not completely dull but takes some of the shine away. The tags are well placed and are tasteful and contour to the different shapes within the back of the club. My previous gamers had a lot more shine to them, so I really appreciate this look now. Otherwise, shape is standard in this category I think with subtle differences where the Forged Tec’s have some striping on the back of the club under “Forged Tec”. That is one of the few things I am not a fan of this club is that striping, but nothing terrible but I had to pick something out:

Grooves.jpg.cdb85782d32c5da6c1fae391c80dedb9.jpg

I always struggle with sound and feel description. I will start with mishits. Mishits honestly still have a similar sound as a well hit ball. It’s a little muted really the only difference. Feel is a little more noticeable with a dead feeling, just no pop. Crisp shots are just instantaneous feedback “that was a good one”. This is something I RARELY had with the 790’s. It was instant with the Forged Tec’s. They just feel and sound light years smoother to me.

8 Iron was a toe hit and 6 iron was a pure (not much sound difference to my ear)

The feel I think has a lot to do with the face. I am not a metal expert and what I had read seemed to make sense. My old 790s had a 4140-steel face which from what I gathered is a more durable steel. Forged Tec has a 1025-steel face which is softer which I believe has to do with the difference in feel between these two sets.

The Numbers (9 out of 10)

The transition was easy for me…lofts, weighting and even the overall look were almost identical. My distances were consistent with my 8 irons being 160 and roughly 10 yards between club’s top to bottom from 4-PW. Major difference I saw was in accuracy and trajectory.

I am draw biased with these clubs, shaft or swing change I am unsure, but my miss is left (I am not two way missing at all with these clubs which is AWESOME). I have not had many if any MAJOR mises with these clubs. An example of this was during one round. I had a very tight window with a pine in front of me on the left and then 40 yards or so ahead of that to the right was a grouping of trees. I had to thread the needle and get the ball high enough to clear the 2nd group of trees, as well as draw the ball to the flag. I mis hit and the ball stayed low, still went right to left and avoided all the trees. I ended up greenside bunker, I par saved out of the bunker (huge for me to not be penalized or have to just absorb a shot by going parallel).

Trajectory on well hit balls is a piercing flight that gets to its peak height (medium-high ball flight) quickly and lands softly. I am a flag hunter by nature and continue to be with the short irons. Longer irons are running out a little bit which is a welcomed change especially when going for a long second shot.

I have been able to work them a little bit but that’s not the strength of my game, I do like the ability to change flight pattern easily. I love a good punch out or stinger and I have been able to do that with these with ease. The stingers are piercing and its awesome.

On-Course (20 out of 20)

Analytically I came down a little, I have gone from losing 4.8 strokes on approach shots to 3.6 since using the Cobras. But more importantly I feel like I have CONSISTENTLY stroked the ball better, and have put myself into great positions especially on par 3’s where I have had several “clinches” as the ball rolls close to the pin.

In order PW from 120, an 8 iron from 162 and 4 iron from 215 these are just examples in the past few weeks of putting the ball really close on par 3's:

PWhole8divot.jpg.32a10e4ebc152cc7f418a4807de9f416.jpg8Ironhole12.jpg.c3ddf72da5f4edd66e03fee14c0fc87f.jpg4ironhole15.jpg.20dd4c3c57167ab23005a7988af091bb.jpg

I am able to work these clubs and some of my favorite shots are low stingers. A great example of this was an 8 iron from about 140. I had a tree blocking me out (below). I was able to keep it low and fade it up into the front of the green. It rolled and was still a long putt, but I was able to knock it onto the green from an otherwise unreachable position. I did not have this versality before or the consistent confidence to continuously execute these shots

8ironundertree.jpg.149aae4015124bbffa9d0ff31785bdf4.jpg

In the end these clubs are the best feeling on well executed shots which is in turn helping me make better ones more often.

The Good, the bad, the in-between (18 out of 20)

Outside of looks I have nothing bad to say about these clubs. My only dislike looks wise (and this is getting granular) like I said before is the striping on the back of the club. Besides that, these in my opinion are the best of this class of club in the players distance category, I have swung them all.

After reading about the metal differences in the face I am going to be monitoring wear on them because the metal is softer and from what some sites I have read is “not as durable”. So far, no issues but will be something like I said I will continue to monitor.

Play it or Trade it? (20 out of 20)

After two rounds I listed my older 790’s in November last year, simple as that. The Cobras have been in the bag ever since. I do want to go get fitted and see what optimal shaft selection would be. I enjoy the current KBS $ Taper 130 that is in them but am curious to see what would be best because I was fitted for DG X100’s, time will tell.

Conclusion

As I always say in my review, you skipped to the end? Well, here is the Snopes version….

These clubs were exactly what I wanted, I wanted to stay in the same players distance category because I love this style of club. I wanted a better feeling club than my 790’s and I got just that. I had played around with other previous years forged tec’s fortunately and loved them, these were no different. I am far more consistent and am hitting more greens going from 40% to now 45%. It is not just the clubs for that because I have learned over the past year to club up and swing easy but the consistency in the clubs pays off. I have a 1 way miss for the most part on these which makes it a heck of a lot easier to attack flags.

Much like my driver these clubs are not going anywhere for some time, just maybe a shaft swap but that’s still to be determined.

If you are looking at players distance category clubs…take it from me because I have swung them all…These have the best feel out of all of them

Final Score (96 out of 100)

Well done!  Great you’re happy with them and staying in the bag, win-win!

Great review Mark! 👏 Cobra was never really on my radar screen until joining MGS and following the Cobra Challenge reviews.  To be honest, I didn't know that much about them.  This one (test opportunity) was a bonus and I'm glad to hear they worked out so well for you...

Spoiler

...even though it's taken me a year and professional help to get over not having been selected for them 🤣

Having had the opportunity to hit almost every iron available this past winter, at our numerous demo day events, the FTX with KBS 75 shafts is in the #1 spot to replace my ZX5's. They seem to have cracked the code on aggressive lofts while maintaining great launch and descent angles.  The local Cobra guys still give me crap about walking away from 12+ yards 🙂.  Have fun playing them this summer!

Wow really great review @Lacassem and totally enjoyed all the "from the course" play by play!! Really great to hear how happy you are with these and to see how they've actually helped your game 👍

.. and now I feel like an idiot for not following through on my original Forged TEC-X demo... So I'm gonna check with fitters near me to see who carries them.

Although my game is *nothing* like yours (4 iron??? WTF is that??? Your 8i goes how far?? And straight??) .. I'm kinda looking for the same thing: a little better feel off the face, especially on the well stuck ones. Plus a little more forgiveness, a little more distance and a little tighter dispersion would be nice to have, also, if at all possible....

Superb review @Lacassem, really enjoyed reading through your thoughts. Glad you're playing well with them, I really want to bag them but I'm enjoying my current irons too much right now, haha.

Lol the infamous 4 iron is a beautful piece of metal that when used properly adds some versatility to the bag! I am sure it will not want to be played at some point this year and I’ll put the hybrid back in but right now it’s loving turf interaction 😂

not sure what the X’s pack relative to the these but I say go for the fitting and st a minimum five then a swing. I had not swung these at the PHA event that came last year the line was too long for cobra but I swung 223s, 225s, Z5 and 7, rogue pro and t100/200s at PGASS. For me these cobras and the 223s are top of that list.

Just a quick update.

My approach play is currently pretty strong in my game. Making up for some poor tee shots and the feel just cant be beat like I discussed in the review. I am still coming up short to often, I have recently reverted back to not clubbing up unknowingly. Need to get back into that and GIR will increase. My overall GIR is up with my wedges but for some reason not taking the same approach with my irons. Missing left instead of right. I will take the 1 way miss.

The cobras have stood the test of a full season and then some. The wear has been great and barely noticeable on the sole after 30+ rounds. Only real blemish I have us in the face of the 8 iron not sure what it’s from.

They are drastically in better shape than my previous gamers.
