Split Hand Grip

I'm aware of the split hand grip drill which is a very dramatic split hand swing that I would never even consider taking out on the course. What I'm talking about is a 3 - 4 inch split of the 10 finger grip which I read on another golf forum gave some golfers a combination of both power and control.

Does anyone here, who plays with a 10 finger grip, split their hands by a couple of inches?

Thanks in advance for your feedback and Happy Labor Day!

That much separation isn’t common. I doubt you would find a teacher who would have a player use that as their normal swing.

Just because one person found some success with it, doesn’t mean it’s a good thing.

You also need to understand what the issues were with the previous grip, swing and what it was doing to the ball flight. More than likely the original grip was incorrect and it caused bad swing mechanics and compensations that were inconsistent

I have seen it used for short game shots... probably a hockey player.  🤣  Never on a full shot since clubhead speed is reduced considerably.  The drill does help with players that swing OTT, but it's a bandaid, not a swing fix.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

I have been playing with this grip. I hurt my hip and cannot get through on my shots so I am trying to groove my swing back.

My plan with this is to go through my bag and map carry distance for all these shots. If they fall in between my gaps, I am going to practice those. Especially if it works on wedges. Would be great to have a 45 yard carry that is pretty automatic

I have dealt with pain issues for years that sometimes will keep me from completing my turn as i come through impact and on the follow through.  On those days i slide my back foot forward like Scheffler does which makes it much easier for me to turn to finish the swing.

For an automatic 45 yard shot have you tried the clock method of swing length?  For instance, use your highest lofted wedge and take it back to a 9:00 position instead of a full swing.  See what yardage that gives you consistently and adjust the swing length to get your 45 yard distance.

Excellent advice! If you have trouble hitting it ‘too far’ past your 45 yard magic number, you can open up the face a little bit and have the shot come in shorter in length, but higher and softer. If you open the face a little, it won’t go right like you think. It actually goes pretty straight and this method is great for tucked pins or longer bunker shots.

I do something like the clock. I have a knee, hip and shoulder shot. Which is essentially a 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 for all my clubs up to 58-9 iron. Same swing just different loft. So with the 4 wedges and the 9 iron it gives me 15 different shots from inside 100. Most of them land on the 20, 30, 40, 50 etc. If split grip gives me a different flight of splits those carry distances, I would have 30+ options inside 100. I take those and write them on a note card with each yardage. So I know when I have a 30 yard carry to roll out to 35, I take my approach wedge to my hip and let er rip tater chip:)
