Unraw Jaws Wedge?

Middler

Recommended Posts

A guy I play golf with wanted to replace the shafts in his Callaway Jaws standard chrome wedges. Local pro sent them in to Callaway, and three days later he got a package with three brand new wedges with the requested shafts, same lofts and grinds - but they were raw models. He didn’t know about raw wedges and now that he’s had them for a few weeks, they are starting to rust, face first. He wants to know if there’s a way to prevent them from rusting without altering performance? The finishes we know of might make the faces more slippery, not desirable? Strange “problem.”

Since they are raw wedges, they are going to rust unless you plate them.   i can’t think of a  DIY method other than keeping them really dry which won’t prevent the rust but might slow it down.

Since read elsewhere that periodic very fine steel wool plus rubbing in WD-40, gun oil or naval jelly will keep them looking good without affecting performance. But there was no permanent solution offered, it’s ongoing. I have no interest in raw wedges, asking for a friend (really)…

I have had raw wedges for over 30 years and the months I am golfing regularly I make sure to dry them off well after playing.  About mid-season I wipe them down with Fluid Film and really rub down the face with a dry towel to get the excess off.  For winter time I still use Fluid Film but don't wipe off the excess unless I go play.  I don't have any issues with them getting rusty.

Fluid Film is my go to stuff for rust & corrosion prevention, it works really well.  I came across a set of mower blades I treated in the pole barn recently that were for a lawn tractor I got rid of about 5 years ago... zero rust on them.  The pole barn has two open sides so it gets dampness and humidity causing non treated metal to rust.  It's non toxic which is good because my dog sniffs it out and likes to lick whatever it is on, apparently lanolin from sheep is tasty!

The only permanent no maintenance solution is plating.  It is just like carbon putters, you have to take care of them or they will rust.   some people prefer the raw wedges, others don’t.
