Thanks for showing this. This photo set, along with the story about the melted golf cart has allowed me to save a couple hundred bucks on rain gear.

Thanks MGS. This site is like a savings account.

During the last round I played in the rain, the club sounded the horns and actually had to drag a couple of guys off the course. I wasn't one of them. You don't mess around with weather here.

Agreed, buddy. Rain is nature's way of saying "Not today, friend. Do some dishes or work in the garage."

When I coached HS golf, they ALWAYS wanted to play in the rain and storms. Apparently they thought they were tougher than Zeus.

HS Swimmers I coached were the same way. Granted they are wet already. We did have one thunderstorm roll through and I got to be Roy Scheider from Jaws. "OUT OF THE WATER!!!"

I've seen someone get shocked before... not from lightning though... There are powerlines that run through the course I play at in my league... It was raining lightly and on one hole a guy was on the green holding his putter... All of a sudden I hear him yell F*&@ VERY loud and see him throw his club and drop to the ground... He was fine, but he said he felt the surge all the way down his arm and into his legs...

We got a good laugh out of that one...

I have a feeling it would be hard putting on that green..... that's pretty cool though, I'm glad I wasn't there.

Maybe easier, just get it into the groove in the earth and hit it hard.

That's what I was thinking, unless it sunk to much into the groove, that would make tap-ins just a little more tricky.

Amazing that the scar looks like the lightning too. This thread is disturbing. I will add to my rule of not playing in the rain the following: "Sometimes it is better to be away."

How frequent are these strikes do you imagine?

If you can't play in the rain, you can't play in Oregon. Unless you play in Autzen Stadium, because "It Never Rains In Autzen Stadium!!!"

Not sure about total number of strikes, but in the U.S. an average of 300 people are injured and 80 killed by lightning each year. And a bolt of lightning reaches a temperature approaching 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit in a split second (courtesy of the New York Times Practice Guide to Practically Everything).
