HELP ME WITH TECHNOLOGY!

badgergolf

Recommended Posts

So back playing golf and taking in more seriously it has got to the time where technology comes into play. I have Arccos as they came free with the clubs and trying it out all seems good however, I am now in a absolute mess trying to pick between three options (feel free to confuse me further by throwing in more suggestions) but want to see what the consensus is between these and of those who may own or use.
So we are looking at the either: Garmin Z82, Voice Caddie SL2 or ShotScope Pro LX +

All see to have their merits but I like my technology and these seem to be the all signing all dancing GPS integrated rangefinders. With Shotscope I could ditch Arccos but with the other would carry on using Arccos most likely. Garmin has the nice blind shot compass to the green but no screen. Voice Caddie has the screen but I have heard the course info can sometimes be a bit dated etc.

In desperate need of help I'd like to have one in my bag next Wednesday when I play. HELP ME PLEASE!

Thanks for the reply.

Ok so tracking is really nice to have after using the Arccos just a bit and happy to stay with Arccos in that regards unless are ShotScope just as good or is Garmin's tracking good. So that would be my first point who has the best in class Shot Tracking/best app etc.

Then I wanted something that would give me the distances and I thought best of both worlds would be one of the gps/range finder combos its just seeing which is the best of the bunch. Obviously Garmin and VC I would stick with Arccos/ ShotScope I would get the H4 GPS package and use the tracking if it is good enough and comparable too Arccos. I like Garmin with the blind shot assist and the wind assist etc. Voice Caddie has the screen so thats it bonus. Shot Scope obviously would probably need use of a phone still as no hole layouts with their gps. Plays Like also a nice feature to have.

Look forward to hearing everyones views and opinions and much appreciate any help!

I am a very happy shotscope user - I went through Arccos to get here - loved the data, but found shot acquisition issues caused more post round edits than shotscope - including using Arccos Link.

But, in your options, the LX+ was an option I looked at but could not make work for me.  Reason - the LX+ uses the H4 device which is the integration for the club sensors.  And the H4 requires a "tap" for each club to be recognized- which is theory is awesome, unless you forget to "tap" reliably, which is what happened to me. For the LX+ its a novel idea, but the thought of having to detach the H4 from the LX rangefinder each time OR bring the rangefinder to a club for each read was an acceptable option for me if and only if I could get the tapping thing down.  But, I did not.  The second big issue for me was the putting capture.  The H4 detach need or brining a rangefinder on the green to tap made zero sense for me.

So, if putting stats are not important for you, and you can figure out a way of get reliable club tapping built into your routine (many have successful done so on this forum), the the LX+ is a ridiculously great combined solution and pretty good value at that.  But it you lack enough cognitive discipline like me to do basic club tapping things well, and crave putting stats that make sense, then it might be a non-starter.

I can't really comment on the other options except to say, we have a local app here from our Golf Body, Golf Canada, which I use on my phone doing the round.  It provides GPS, score capture and a simple "end of round score" submission process since I keep scores as I go along.  Not sure if you have such an option (or any aversion to using a phone during a round), but just sharing that its a routine/workflow that works for a data hungry scatterbrain like me 🙂

Thanks for the input very helpful. What do you use the trackers with if not the H4 ? I'm guessing the watch ?

What was the reason you went away from Arccos and preferred ShotScope was it that its subscription free or is it a better app experience or course view data? With the ShotScope I'd still be using a p-hone during the round I would imagine anyway to get hole layouts as the GPS doesn't offer a hole view just the data points for the green and hazard if what I have seen online I've understood?

Yes, incorporating the tap into your routine is a change, but someth8ng that could be easily overcome.   Also, they provide a belt clip that you can attach the h4 to which makes the tap, process easier and doesn’t require you to carry the rangefinder with you. For missed shots you add them post round when you review your shots.

You'll get passionate users here for both ARRCOS and Shotscope. My wife and I are both Shotscope converts - we both use the V3. We used the ARRCOS system for about a year and it was just too much both in editing after the round along with the data presented. And had negatives features such as requiring a phone in the pocket, or Link - which never seem to work for us or an apple watch which neither of us have not to mention the subscription fee.

Our objective is simple - shot tracking so that we can get data around club distances. As of yet, we don't use Strokes Gained or other features, however, we may in the future. When we got the V3s, the H4 was not available along with the LX. However, in retrospect, I'd still end up with the V3 watch. It took a little bit to get use to wearing a watch but the advantages are; a quick glance gets you FMB distances, penalty areas, along with,  it'll show the club you're currently holding. So no guesswork on the latter - did it capture the club. Also no fiddling with the belt clip and the device falling off.  My sense is that we both probably only use 25% of its capabilities of the device and the app - but that's pretty comparable to our other tech devices. And by the way SS has superior customer service.

One disadvantage of the V3 is that it's a rechargable device - meaning that once the batter goes it's toast. On the other hand I've got 200+ rounds from 2021 and 2022 and the battery hasn't deteriorated (note I can get 36 holes before recharge).

So there you have it from a VERY satisfied SS user.

I guess this does come down to 2 points for me.

Arccos vs Shot Scope vs Garmin (in tracking)

then how much of an improvement if their is one in the shot tracking that would make getting the PRO LX+ Bundle better then getting just a better quality rangefinder/GPS combo in the voice caddie SL2 or Garmin z82 (then which out of those 2 is best)

I Do also have an Apple Watch so Arccos doesn't need my phone for tracking just use the app on the phone as GPS currently but kept in bag for a glance.

Z82 tracking is basically score, fairways, and putts based on what I am reading.  I vote ShotScope for tracking since it is free; otherwise they are basically equivalent.

You keep asking for “best” but aren’t providing criteria for evaluation other than talking about shot tracking.  What features in Rangefinder/GPS combo do you have to have?   Do you just want GPS distance and being able have a rangefinder in one unit? Do you want the “cool” features of the garmin?     If you just want us to pick something and money is no object, buy the garmin and keep arccos because  you are already using it and don’t have to start over with data capture.

Sorry yes. So it was honestly when it come to shot tracking what gives the most data points, most app features, nicest look app,  least miss reads all over the course (including putting) with the least human interaction needed. between shot scope , Arccos or CT10 (Garmin's trackers)

Then the money no object best GPS/Rnagefinder combo which I would say would come down to most accurate, most useful features (e.g Garmin blind shot feature & wind data), quickest picking up reads.

At this moment in time I am leaning towards either the Z82 or Voice Caddie with Arccos as my trackers. So does anyone have experience with both or either of those range finders?

Ok,  so you are really most interested in tracking.   If you are looking at the Z82,  it doesn't do shot tracking so you'd have to pick another device.  See the CT10 compatible device list:  https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/605172#devices   If you search the forum,  there are some positive opinions about the Z82.

There was a forum review on the SL2;  you can get insight into that product here:

Thanks for the input very helpful. What do you use the trackers with if not the H4 ? I'm guessing the watch ?

What was the reason you went away from Arccos and preferred ShotScope was it that its subscription free or is it a better app experience or course view data? With the ShotScope I'd still be using a p-hone during the round I would imagine anyway to get hole layouts as the GPS doesn't offer a hole view just the data points for the green and hazard if what I have seen online I've understood?

Yes I use the watch for shot capture with the tags. For me I just found Arccos didn’t capture as many shots as Shotscope - if Arccos and Shotscope made a baby I think it would be awesome - probably the best data analytics from Arccos with the most reliable data capture (and the awesome manual putting mode ) of shotscope. I also looked at (but did not buy or use) the Garmin solution since it really does it all in theory - but they just don’t seem to have the data figured out.

I was an early adopter Arccos user so grandfathered in with no subscription costs - although mistakenly took a ping free sensor deal and used that with a subscription for a little while. Another advantage - for me- with shotscope is to be able to have more clubs tagged - I have two sets and Arccos didn’t seem to have a practical way of dealing with that besides a separate account (which makes data comparison clumsy) - but Shotscope enables drag and drop of clubs i to your bag for specific rounds. Quite nifty for me as I like to try different clubs and compare results based on playing experience vs sim data.

And yes the Shotscope solution doesn’t have a useful hole on a screen view of any sort while playing. So it seems like some extra device is always in play with that requirement.

Arccos sensors have an internal battery that dies. They will replace some sensors but you can’t count on it so buying / accumulating some was key for me. I did find you can replace the battery for Arccos sensors (it’s only a cr2032) - it’s not terribly difficult. Arccos sensors are also quite big and kinda ugly - I black sharpied the green base thing to make them look less, um, green 🤭

Shotscope sensors are rfid so no battery need for foreseeable future and arcoos sells fulls sets for $50 if you need more. Quite robust as well - I’ve only broken one in two years.

gatmin sensors  have a user replaceable  battery which is good. But replacement sensors are costly if needed - the sensor cost was one if the biggest reasons I bailed out of more garmin focus or a trial but to test.

Now, to some non sensor club tracking options .   I’ve been trialing the V1 game app - it’s got some cool shot tracking algorithms that don’t need sensors but that do need you to 1) identify which club you hit and 2) clean up all the useless shot indicators that you don’t need - although you can ignore those and when you “sign off” the round they get deleted anyway  (I think) .

The garmin S6x watches do something similar as well I think for non sensor based tracking. and there are other apps that also use movement algorthims to guess (quite accurately) shot locations.

Thanks for all the insights.

I have made my mind up now after reading the reviews and testing that Z82 is the one for me in terms of a rangefinder that will give me some nice added functions. (I did see a Precision Pro R1 which wasn't on my radar but it appears it isn't available in the U.K anyway so can only imagine no courses would be mapped etc either so its a no go and the Voice Caddie SL2 seemed to be very buggy from what I have seen, not sure if it has been fixed since with updates but think Garmin is the way to go.

Will stick with the Arccos for now also and then perhaps down the line it may be that I run the Garmin Z82 with the Shot Scope watch & trackers. But with an Apple Watch that pairs nicely with the Arccos and even updates the apple health with a golf round probably stick with that for now and change if something becomes an issue at a future date with around the green etc as you mentioned.

I have used Arccos for a couple of years now, love that I now know very precisely my mapping/gapping.

It’s not difficult post round to tune the results, takes minutes and good to go over the round anyway if it’s accuracy you want.

In addition I ALWAYS use a rangefinder for shots to the pin, avoid obstacles etc, only today I bought the new Bushnell Pro X3 with slope.

I bought ShotScope V2 ~3.5 years ago, then won a set of Arccos sensors here later that same year. I really liked ShotScope but the V2 watch was huge and battery life wasn't good. At that time, the Arccos dashboard was quite a bit better than SS, in my opinion, so given the "downsides" of huge watch or phone in front pocket, I chose phone in front pocket and gave my SS to a friend. As I understand it, the SS dashboard has improved a lot and the V3 watch is smaller with better battery life (plus the newer options like the H4, etc.). My Arccos sensors are also 3 years old now. I know a lot of people have had issues with missed shots, but, other than putts, I can count the number of shots Arccos has missed on a couple fingers (out of 8200+ shots taken). Part of me wonders if it is some flaw with the next gen sensors? An issue with the link (it seems link users report more missed shots)? Up until 10 days ago, I was using a StrokeLab putter with the soft micro hinge face. I assume the lack of sound makes shot detection tricky. Arccos replaced the putter sensor for me once, but it never really worked either, so I finally took the sensor off and manually add my putts. Since I am using a "louder" putter these days, I may reattach the putter sensor and see what happens.

Once my sensors start dying (and those @tony@CIC gave me when he and/or his wife switched to SS), I'm likely done with shot tracking. I don't like subscriptions and I don't know if going back to SS would give me enough ROI since I already know my distances really well and know what I need to work on. More than likely, I'll keep using the Arccos app for the "plays like" distance as that has become my favorite feature.

I've been looking at Arccos and like you don't like subscriptions, my old Bushnell works well with distance to the green so don't think I'll bother with it plus I don't like the idea of being told what to do lol...

I’m a hacker who loves nothing more than to change how I play, be that grips shafts and heads its all fair game lol…
