Yvonne
An air shot was taken from the tee, the ball didn’t move and remained on the tee, the iron took a divot directing behind the ball, the divot was still attached to the ground but was sat neatly behind the ball. A penalty stroke for the air shot and can the divot be replaced before taking your next shot?

A penalty stroke for the air shot and can the divot be replaced before taking your next shot? See rule 6.2B. Since the ball is in the teeing area: (3) Certain Conditions in Teeing Area May Be Improved. Before making a stroke, the player may take these actions in the teeing area to improve the conditions affecting the stroke (see Rule 8.1b(8) Alter the surface of the ground in the teeing area (such as by making an indentation with a club or foot), Move, bend or break grass, weeds and other natural objects that are attached or growing in the ground in the teeing area, Remove or press down sand and soil in the teeing area, and Remove dew, frost and water in the teeing area. Looking at this interpretation, the player can also tee the ball in a different area. 6.2b(6)/1 – Ball That Comes to Rest in Teeing Area Does Not Have to Be Played as It Lies Any time a player’s ball is inside the teeing area, the player may move the ball to another spot within the teeing area, and may play it from a tee without penalty. For example, a player makes his or her first stroke from the teeing area, barely making contact with the ball, and the ball either comes to rest on the ground within the teeing area or remains on the tee. Since the ball is in the teeing area, the player may play the ball as it lies or, even though the ball is in play, may move the ball to any other spot within the teeing area and play from there without penalty. The player may also place the ball on a tee or adjust the height of the tee the ball is resting on. GaryF
And while on a similar topic, I think the following is true on the tee and green (no where else). If in the process of addressing the ball in those two areas, if the club inadvertently touches/nudges the ball, even to the point of the ball falling off the tee, there is no stroke. The stroke needs to be intentional. Last spring while my wife was playing in her WGA, she came home and said she would have had a really good score if not for slightly nudging the ball on the green while placing the club behind the ball, and happened 2 times. She said 2 of the women she was playing with kind of went berserk and shamed her. My wife has had a few hand surgeries and very poor circulation.
