Project find the right grip and grip size

If you guys think my CHA habits are bad, my choice of grips and grip sizes is even worse. I can't come to a conclusion on what exact grip and grip size I like. I am pretty sensitive to grip size, maybe not so much in actual impact to my ball flight, but more so in terms of how the grip feels in my hand.

Some notes:

  • Don't like full cord grips or grips like MCC, too rough
  • I have measured different "standard" size grips on the same shaft size and they don't measure the same. For example, i've found Lamkin standards to be bigger than Golf Pride standard holding shaft diameter and tape wraps constant
  • Iomic 1.8 (undersized) grips are close to my liking in terms of grip size, but just a tad too small, especially in the lower hand
  • Undersize plus 4, feels too large in the lower hand

From the notes above, you can see i'm very picky about grips. Going to try to find the right grip size and grip. I think its going to be an Iomic 1.8 with 1 to 2 wraps of masking tape under the lower hand.

Have not tried winn undersize grips.

Going to try iomic 1.8 with 1 extra wrap of 0.007 tape under the right hand. People say you can't feel the difference between one wrap of tape, but I definitely can.

I recently tried a Lamkin standard vs. a GP Tour Velvet standard. Thought it was in my head that the Lamkin felt  alot bigger. Measured it and it was about 0.01 to 0.015 bigger, which is about one wrap.

I feel your pain. I struggle with this too. I have small hands and had an iomic 1.8 sticky (ribbed) on my driver for a little, I added 3 wraps under the bottom hand and liked it for size, but I didn’t like the texture…too mushy so I went back to a tour velvet.

have you tried the lamkin 360? The grey one.  It feels different to me, thinner and stickier.

I actually love grips with more texture, maybe because I don’t wear a glove. I’d really like to find something rough and tacky, but I’m at a loss.

Going to undersized Star Sidewinders made a huge difference for me this year. So much more comfortable. On my SteelFibers, one wrap of 3M blue painter's tape on the upper hand and two wraps on the lower hand result in what is traditionally a "standard" size grip. I played Lamkin Sonars last year, but on graphite shafts with larger butt ends they were just a bit too large.

The other perk of the Star Sidewinders in undersized is that they are not too light (45 grams in black vs 47 grams for standard), so swing weighting isn't such a huge issue.

Don't think I'll be doing quite as much experimentation as you, but I am looking to see if there's a better grip out there for me. Currently game the GP Tour Velvet but contemplating a full cord. I think I've narrowed it down to the Tour Velvet BCT, Lamkin Crossline 360 Genesis, and the Lamkin UTX. Most interested in the Genesis as it seemed to provide the best feel when I last visited the store.

I’m thinking if you keep doing as much analysis as you are you’ll never be satisfied, just my thought.

Personally I have ‘normal’ hand size but prefer a Golf Pride CP2 midsize for last couple of years, it’s so good I completely forget about the size etc

when I pick up a club in a shop with a ‘normal’ grip it seems like a pencil, way too thin that I have to grip harder.

Suggestion: go for the one you have ‘so far’ deemed to be best ‘for you’ and play for a few rounds. It will surely feel either OK or not, if not go thinner or thicker 😀

Interesting subject=== My grip size is odd by conventional thinking. If you go by grip charts I need a Midsize or Jumbo because I wear a XXX glove. Not so for me I use basically a standard because I mostly hold the club in my fingers. One of the ways I manulipulate the club.

On grips for me it depends on the paticular club both by number on the club and the brand and what shaft is in it. I have an uncanny sense of feel but again I do some odd stuff to conventional thinking. Like my Muirfields they have old school GP Victory cords and they hit good for me. I did not build those but whoever did knew their stuff because they balance good. My infamous Mac Hogans I built those and used GP Wraps and they are balanced. With the shaft combo they feel and hit well. Now I do some total out of the box things. My driver I have a old school Maltby cord on it as I do the 7 wood 9 wood and 50* Vokey. The 3 wood I have a GP Tour Velvet. The Vokey 58 has a stock Velvet on it.

Now on grips themselves the thickness of the material may differ. Also if I am blueprinting building a set I weigh everything. a set of like Tour Wraps may vary from 1 to 2 grams of published specs. Also if I am blueprinting a set of irons I use all the grip tape from a single roll because thickness and weight may vary too between rolls of even the same brand. I also take the dial calipers and check my row of tape to be consistent and check the diameter of the finished product.

Basically I say it is what ever feels good to you in regards to brand and model type. Remember to quote an old saying your hands and grip are the point of contact with the club. If you have a comfortable grip then there is no tension. Tension transfers up from the hands to the rest of the body affecting the overall swing. But good luck all that I have posted here comes from my experiences and experimenting. Never be afraid to experiment

Grips in general is a very interesting discussion. Although my hand size would put me in a standard size grip which I have on my irons. I play Golf Pride Tour Velvet Align Standard on my 4-GW, CP2 Pro standard on my SW and LW, but I have CP2 Pro Midsize on my driver, 3W and hybrid. I would suggest trying one grip on your favorite club. The Mobile Club maker on YouTube has a great video on how to put on/remove grips with an air compressor. Easy on, easy off. Masking tape only. No grip tape, no solvent, hence no glue. Everyone is different. JMHO.

I think you are on the right track.  Try the Iomic 1.8 with one extra wrap.  I think it might be what you are looking for.  Question:  Does your glove make a difference?  Once I found the right grip for myself, I stopped using a glove.  In wet weather I use a cotton glove.  Try it and let me know.

I have a bunch of those Crossline 360 genesis if you need some. i tried one, but installed, it plays bigger than a GP tour velvet.

I haven’t tried them yet though it looks like I should. I just installed a Star wrap grip that I had laying around, because I heard they were made of similar materials but it somehow doesn’t feel as grabby as the Tour velvet that was on there, so I’m a little disappointed.

Is the pure grip material different enough from Star to give them a chance?
