A well deserved article on Golf.com about two of the MANY quality municipal courses around the Portland Metro area.  Heron Lakes and Colwood.

All my Portland Metro and SW Washington forum brethren will back me up on this.

I have had memorable experiences at all three courses (two at Heron and one at Colwood).  I miss many things about the PNW.  Golfing in the PNW is high on that list.

I used to play Colwood a fair amount when it was 18 holes and I was just learning to play, so there are a lot of good memories. I've played Great Blue a handful of times, not since some time in the 90's if I were to guess, but never Greenback. I always enjoyed Heron Lakes. There is a lot I miss about the PNW and golf is certainly among them.

I haven’t played Colwood either. Driven past it a few times.

Heron lakes is hit and miss for me. I like the layout and for a city owned course it’s normally it pretty decent shape. My problem with it is the amount geese and their presents they leave. Ive hit some really hood drives on the back 9 of Blue, I’ve also walked a few fairways where there was more goose s*** than grass.

never have played green back.

Colwood used to be a full regulation 18, but was sold to the city about 10-12 years ago.  They kept a third, a third went to wildlife preserve along the Slough, and the other third is now the new USPS distribution and sorting facility. They turned it into a par 27 with the longest hole being ~200 yards uphill.  Big undulating greens makes it a great place to practice your approach and short game.  If no one is in front to slow you down you can take a tour during a long lunch.  I've done it in less than an hour before, 80 minutes is typical.  I wind up playing there a few times a month just because it's 10 minutes from my house and how little time it takes to take a lap.

Too bad Broadmoore closed down, that was even closer...
