On my trip to Phoenix last week my rental was a Ford Explorer (not the Camry I thought I was getting).  I will never, ever have an SUV like that POS.  It gets decent mileage, but waaaay too much technology with some of it already going wrong.  I much prefer my 2003 Ford Exporer Sport Trac...

1985 GMC Safari

Original Model w/ auto 4.3L V6 (may still run) ...carbureted too 🙂

Oh the memories...

Purchased new in '85 for around $8k as a 'truck' aka it had a driver seat and AM/FM radio... my father, brother and I argued and completed the 'custom' plush interior (remember conversion vans?).

Used as a family camping wagon all across the country for 12 years or so before passing it along to the youngest (that's me) to drive it into...  severe old age.

I believe it was finally sold from the farm garage a few years back for $500. Still running fairly strong... although the only working door was the passenger side front! It was one hell of a 'clown car' 'party wagon' 'trail boss' in its day!! Long live the 'Wool Ride'!

1989 Pontiac Sunbird...  And it was an LE...To this day have no idea what that meant, manual transmission.

And since then I've owned 3 other vehicles.  1990 Ford Ranger 2WD pickup, 2000 Nissan Frontier 4WD pickup, and 2017 Mini Cooper.

AND NO the Mini is not my wife's hand me down, that I was ordered to drive. Its a clubman, and my golf clubs fit nicely in the back with the back seats folded down.  Not that I'm touchy about the subject!!!🤣  AND NO its not really that small!!🤣🤣

sunbird.jpg.0fc949e6088987966e55971a5b2c4dcf.jpgminiall4.jpg.e4122818acc12cefbe0212e430dae538.jpg

I had a ’06 MINI convertible and was walking from the parking lot to a grocery store and a lady stopped me and asked me how I liked the car. I told her I loved it. She told me her son wanted one, but she wasn’t sure if he could drive it because at 6’4” he was taller than me and he played golf and she didn’t think he could get his clubs in the car either.

I pointed to my son-in-law that was walking towards us and told her he was 6’8” that he had just gotten out of the passenger seat, that he had also driven the car in the past and we had just left the golf course and there were two sets golf clubs in the car. She was surprised.

I went from that car to a ’11 Clubman.

Yes.  I am 6'3", and on more than one occasion I've been walking to my car, and people have rolled down their window, and commented "that's not your car".  It is amazing how much room is in them, and you are correct two sets of clubs fit just fine.  And while I would NEVER do this, I have heard that in sport mode the vehicle is very fast, and can often take curves with a suggested speed of 35 MPH, at much more than that.  Not to mention 480 miles on 13 gallons of gas is pretty good also!

My first vehicle was a beat-up $500 '88 F-150 that was abused by a contractor and died after I drove it for 6 months or so. During spring break my freshman year of college, my stepfather and I pulled the engine, tore it down swapped out the long block for a rebuilt one and reinstalled it. I don't have pictures but grabbed a somewhat similar one off the interwebs (this one is in much better condition than mine was).

Purchased one similar to this in 1964 from a farmer for $200.  1950 2 door coup Ford, Navy blue,  6 cylinder with overdrive, three speed.  My rims were stock and navy.  I bought baby moons for the rims.  I shaved the hood took a lot of the chrome ornamentation off the front, because it had bumper bars, think that is what they were called.  Changed all the interior lighting to blue.  Loved that old car.  My first love.  We purchased it from a farmer for $200.  For it's age it could run.  Wish I still had this one and restored it.

Sorry, no picture.  I had a 1968 Pontiac GTO the original “Goat”.  Baby Blue, 400 CC, 4 barrel, chrome wheels, it was sharp.  I was 16 years old and supported the county I lived in with traffic violations and knew the County Magistrate by name.  Man, I loved that car!  😎

1953 Buick Roadmaster RIveria two door hardtop.  Power steering, wire spoked wheels, vertical valve 321 V8, Electric windows, electric seat adjustment, leather seats.  Buick's version of the wonderbar radio.  There was a button on the floor that you could change the radio stations with your foot.  You started it by pushing the gas pedal all the way to the floor.  I still have dreams about this car.

Red Gremlin. I had it at college. I was in ROTC. One of my non-ROTC buddies soaped it one night, drawing a big peace symbol on the hood. I don't know what kind of soap he used or what kind of cheap assed paint was on the car but washing, waxing, smoothing with compound, no matter what I did that symbol could be seen in some lights. Fun times.

Yes, well mostly unscathed.   I'm 6'4" and I was hit with such impact that my head when it hit the ceiling in the car, pushed the sun roof (metal not glass) completely out of place.   The construction of the car the frame, really saved me, it was crumpled into a little ball but the driver cockpit was pretty much untouched.   When my seister went to the demo lot to retriev my beliongings, the owner of the lot was all prepared to offer his condolences on her loss.  He was shocked that I only spent one day in the hospital for observation.

I did suffer some damage to my eyes, as I was wearing contacts and all the debris/dust flying around int he car got under them and scratched my cornea.  But my vsion was not damaged.  Later in life i have suffered some scaring around some disc in my neck, and the dr's now think that could be related to the damage from that.

The 2nd part of the story. Seat Belt laws were just coming nto place then in the US,  I generally never wore a seat belt much.  Two weeks prior tothe accident I got a ticket for not wearing a seat belt, that cost  $75...A lot of money to a 30 year old in 1990 🙂    I started wearing one that day, to avoid any more tickets.   I think without a doubt it was the biggest reason I survived that wreck.   Otherwise I'd probably would have been tossed through that sunroof or at least hit my head on the highway udring one of the flips.

My sister visited the Raleigh, NC police station a couple weeks later and wanted to see and thank the officer who gave me that ticket.  They had her address the force one morning during the roll call to let them know doing simple things like traffic stops does matter.   She said there weren't many dry eyes when she finished.

Sorry to go OT...but since you asked..ha

I had a 62 four door.  The under carriage looked like it had been dropped on a pile of rocks.  Eventually the drive shaft fell apart.  It also had some bullet holes in the back seat floor and one of the pistons was cracked.  Found out later that it probably came from an Indian reservation in South Dakota.

Before I got the Shelby, my first was a 95 Ford Thunderbird with Pearlescent Purple Paint at 17 years old. A week later I wrecked that and got the 1983 Monte Carlo you see pictured below with custom seats, just a 305 with radial and a magnaflow exhaust. At 19, I got a 95 Z28 Camaro with Ttops and a 5.7 LT1. At 21, I got the Shelby then at 23 I got a 2014 Chevy Spark aptly named Lemon Fresh, don't ask about this car hahah. The. At 24 a 2007 F150 Lariat, nothing special, a 2002 BMW X5 4.4, a 1998 BMW 528i, then at 27 a 2005 Nissan Altima I won in a raffle for $1, a 2016 Yamaha Bolt. Those were all in my 20's. I drive an 85 Chevy G20 now hahahah

My wife is the same story. A 2016 Jeep Liberty, a 2018 civic, a 2018 scion IM, a 2018 Toyota Corolla IM, and now a 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander. We have had a lot of cars concurrently

I've owned about 30 car's since 1965, pre 81 all cheap and nasty like the Morris. Post 81 in Sydney mostly V8 Holden's, had a very quick Passat for awhile 1600 double over head can...
