what are you working on this off Season

Recommended Posts

Similar to Foz above, my golf season just get's a bit cooler in the winter months (one of the few things I really like about living in South Texas.).  So I'm fortunate to be able to play through most of the winter - aside from the occasional tropical storm and 100 year freeze (why have all the 100 year events seem to be happening every few years these day????).

Last season, I was ready to work hard on my game as I entered the December/January/February timeframe... but I had a stress fracture in my rib that put me on the bench for the better part of 10 weeks.  My wife can tell you exactly how many days it was... because I kept reminding her.  I have never seen her so happy that I was able to go to the course again.

This winter, I am going to try to improve my golf strength, which will hopefully allow me to fight off the effects of old man time, and possibly even find a little more horsepower in my swing.  I'm not sure I want to go full in on speed training, but maybe light speed training with the Rypstick.... but if I know me at all... if I see some results.. I'll dive in headlong.  I just don't want to do more damage than good by an aggressive speed training protocol.

If I pick one area to dedicate my time to in my game... it will be 100 yards in.  Pitching, chipping and putting... I'm not breaking new ground by saying I can save more strokes per round by having a solid game 100 in.

The last thing I will mention, and possibly the most important, is changing my mental approach.  Focusing on the right things, spending time to improve my game, but realizing... it is a game, and to truly enjoy the experience... no matter what the scorecard says.   That is the biggest lift for me.

I look to the following post for motivation... you should too 🙂

Hell yeah, TCB! Those are some great goals.

I've got my books open if you're looking for some coaching on the mental side of the game.

Mine is similar in getting a swing speed high enough to basically hit these speed, just won't be able to hit a ball for a while once the snow falls, as you know. I also have enjoyed watching what Mark Crossfield is working on with his force plates, not that I have those, but cover many of the same things. And heck if he can get faster being a bit older, almost hitting 170 ball speed, why not us too right.

Some of those guys definitely highlight that I should be above 150 MPH ball speed. If you are deadlifting less than 300 lbs and squatting less than 200, there is gym work to do gaining speed without a golf club.

Ya, i am on track to be deadlifting way above 300 and close to 250 on squats with a large range of motion. I can short squat that already for 5-8 reps.

Going to a gym for the first time this winter.  Just found out I get free gym membership and instruction through my health coverage so off I go for resistance training and light, very light, weight work, or whatever they suggest after I inform them what my goals are.     Other than that will work on driver, pitch, and punch shots when time allows.

Can’t believe it took me this long to watch. Will definitely be trying to implement this into my training. Especially the waggle work.

Love this thread! I'll most likely spend most of my time on strength training and sequencing. Pretty happy with my game overall for how much I practice and play, but I still struggle to make a proper turn with my hips and extend my arms through the shot (a lot of flipping still). I manage it all okay as I still have forward shaft lean and hands in front of the club head at impact, but just knowing it's not as good as it could be drives me nuts - makes me feel like I'm still leaving a lot on the table. So... that's my primary goal and then I just need to get in shape again. Been struggling on and off for years and just kind of fed up with myself for not making more of a commitment.

We'll see how it goes. I've got my Spornia net from testing in '21 and just finished cleaning up the garage so I can set it up whenever. Only issue there is I'm severely limited with what clubs I can hit. I also purchased some foam balls after giving myself a good scare so the back patio is an option again (still limited on what clubs I can use). I'll probably utilize the practice area and mastery course (3-hole practice course) at Tierra Verde this winter as well. Speaking of, I might see if the wife will let me head that way now! lol

Where do I start? Since there isn't really any off season here, I'm going to try to use the cooler weather we get during the winter to walk more often when I play. Even though cart is included with the price I pay for the round, I enjoy walking the course more so as long as it won't be a huge issue with the course, I will probably do more walking. I refuse to walk the course during the summer when it's 115+.

I've already talked to my trainer about going from 3 resistance workouts to 4 a week, so hopefully can gain some there. I'm down a little over 60 pounds from last year but now I want to start building some more muscle. I know there are some speed gains available there.

Planning on dedicating time for the super speed training this winter. I need to actually focus on doing it the proper way this time though. Last time I mainly went for pure speed numbers and it completely threw off my sequencing and timing. I need to focus on keeping my swing how it is, just adding in the extra speed. Hopefully it will help translate to the driver. It's been mentioned in my last two fittings that my driver swing speed isn't matching up with my iron swing speeds. I know it's a sequencing and comfort thing, so I need to work on those more.

Majority of my practice time I want to spend on the putting green and short game areas. While putting isn't exactly a weakness for me, it's still an easy place for me to drop a few shots a round. Short game mainly because those 30-60 yard shots have been giving me issues. I haven't been playing often enough to get the right feel for them, so it would be nice to see those shots getting closer than 40 feet. Hopefully I can make my life a little easier on the greens.

Full swing work will continue, but will not be the majority of my time. I'm at a place with that where I have a few key feelings that work to tie things together pretty nicely and I can make corrections based on those.

Speed speed and more speed!

While I'm always obsessed with speed and gym work, I do need to make some serious improvements in my wedge play.  Green side chipping I feel very confident, but that 50-90 yard range...I just am not good enough, and need to be to take advantage of distance gains.

Not sure exactly how I'm going to do that over a Northeast winter.  My initial thoughts are PlaneMate work, we'll see.  A bit limited on space and basement ceiling clearance to do much...

Scheduled for shoulder surgery Nov 8. Not as bad as it could be, but will need to rebuild strength and mobility. Also, currently playing stiff shafts at 68, so will probably need to reevaluate my equipment when I am able to hit balls again.

Had mine last January…..pretty much recovered the shoulder but lower back issue creeping back into my game, both from rear ended auto accident July ‘21.  I wish you a speedy recovery from the shoulder…..mine took about 8 weeks to get back on the course.

Golf specific off-season work

120 yards and in: this year I tried to add 3/4 & 1/2 shots to my wedge game: with varying results. So I’ll be working more on hitting various yardages with all 4 wedges(pW, 50, 54 & 60)

Putting: I’d like to increase my make % from 3-9 feet from 50% up to 65%. The 12 ft birdie ball matt usually gets rolled out for the winter around Halloween.

My workouts go back to more weight lifting and less HIIT this time of year. So I’ll look to add strength without bulking.

I am steady in between 105-107 MPH CHS while hitting balls a few days into it. Accuracy at the range was way better than expected. Usually cruise around 100 MPH and suffer from most of these issues: rigid setup, not enough use of legs, etc. The difficult part for me is trying to add squat and jump with the lead leg. Hopefully adding that and refining the weight shift can get me cruising at 110MPH and peaking out at 115MPH for next season.

Exactly where I hope to be next year. I also cruise around 100 and could use the power sources much better. We will have to both check back in after the long winter we are both heading into. Maybe even a little friendly competition?

Shoulder surgery for was March 9th 2021. That was the second surgery on my right shoulder. I am still working on getting the strength back and I fear I will never get it back. hasn't bothered my golf swing that I'm aware of. I chipping by the end of June and played my first full round in late July of 2021.

Good luck with your surgery, and I will tell anyone and everyone, Do not miss a PT appt or home work. I can't stress enough how important getting the smaller less used muscles to fire up and help with the healing.

I’m with you. The Rory squat down and push off with the lead leg is something I really covet but just can’t seem to get the sequencing down.

Now THERE is an idea, an MGS offseason speed training competition.  Now how would that be set up…baseline and then final numbers with driver at March 1st to get a greatest percentage of improvement?  Or just fastest number overall?  I’ll bet we could get the mods to put out a speed badge to the winner at the very least…
