I think with ball testing the data is extremely important and explaining data is not simple or short. Its worth going longer and getting all the thoughts and descriptions out there instead of cutting it short and withholding specific information.

Couldn't agree more.

I have never done a comprehensive ball test like that and I was struck by how, at least for me, all the balls did what they said they were going to do (both the Protos and the comparison balls that I was using). The big surprise to me was that I "fit" (or at least it seemed like the best fit) into a ProV1x which I have always shied away from.

The one thing that has changed significantly since the start of this test and now is that my swing speed is up about 7 mph due to Otto-Phlex and NTC so may need to do another "unofficial" ball test next month. I am still, even after having good success with the proto balls, curious about playing a softer, less spinny ball but that is just the tinkerer in me.

I will not be playing them, as I pointed out in my summary.  Not taking anything away from the quality and performance of either of these balls, I'm just happy with the Maxfli Tour ball at this point.

I’m gonna stick with the Bridgestone Tour Bx at the start of next season. It might not have the best ball lab score but I tend to shoot lower scores with that ball because of it’s on course consistency. Which to me matters more than ball lab.

If I were to try a new ball though I might venture into the chrome sort XLS as well which I have played in the past and really liked overall on the course as well as the benefit of the triple track alignment.

I've still got a few options on my list to test before I fully commit to one. If money were not a concern, I'd likely stick with the Proto 348, but that's not my reality. I see diminishing returns on my money with other options, so I'm more likely going to end up with a DTC ball.

For wknd rounds, I’ll keep it to the DTC family with Vice, Snell and Maxfli … but for serious competitive rounds (or even expensive resort courses or green fees), then yes, I’ll absolutely be gaming the 348s/ProV1xs.

I came away hella impressed with them off the tee, and would need to spend some time with them around the greens to get used to their feel.

Nice job guys - I have enough of this year's Pro V1x's that I won't be changing for a while (5 dozen or so.)  I may need to give the Pro VI a try again - in the past I've been shorter with it than the 1x's but maybe it's the ticket in the winter months here when it's windier?

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

I'm switching once I get through the last of the Z-star diamonds. Normally, would've gone back to V1x but after playing both for the past couple of months, shots into the wind with the regular V1 perform a little bit better than the X for me.

I haven't played the regular V1 prior to the test, but I did find it a better ball in the wind than the X that I'm used to. Left to right, not so much, but into a head wind, it's almost incapable of spinning up and ending a mile short of target. Don't know if that's how it has always been, or what Sheffeler was alluding to in the MGS article about the tour seeding of this year's models. Not complaining though, we're always fighting the wind here.

I alluded to it in my review and mentioned it in a reply, but while I won't be gaming these balls, this test has finally convinced me that the ball does indeed matter to me.  I still lose enough that I can't quite justify the price tag of top balls, but I'm moving up a level or two from bargain balls and also sticking to one particular ball for longer than before.

In addition to roughly two sleeves left of each prototype ball, I have four dozen various balls from last year and Christmas gifts.  I'll go through some as I ramp up at season start, but my main ball will be the 2022 OnCore Elixir.  I also have a gift card for Dick's and will probably use it for a box of the new ProV's later in the season.

Just saw that the price for these balls will be $55, up from $50 previously.

I was at Walmart yesterday and noticed that the price on the top balls they carry (no ProVs or TP5s for example) all went up from $40 to $43, or similar increases.

I'm set for the moment, but my next investment may be a telescoping ball retriever, LOL 😂

So a few notes from the official release of the balls today. (LINK)

I am actually proud of myself for a number of things that I THOUGHT I observed about the balls on what did or did not change. Two of them being the cover/dimple pattern being the unchanged and a slightly different spin profile.

One thing I am curious about is the core of the V1X. I cut open one of my balls and the colors look to be slightly different. The below image is from MGS and it appears to be a cream/orange color for the core and the outer core is more of a strawberry/pink color.

image.png.1ec46f90589ede3fa8a97b3afb79253d.png

Below is the one I cut open and it appears to be a more tan/brown core and the outer core is closer to red.

I compared the photos of the V1 and they look identical to me so I don't think that it is just a color temperature thing from my phone compared to the MGS camera. See below.

I'm sure it's nothing but it was interesting to me.

In a surprising turn of events, the 2021 Titleist balls actually went up in price (At Golf Galaxy). They are now $52.99. I expected them to go down in price since the new balls are available but that isn’t the case (yet).

How many of you still have golf balls left? I noticed the older verions of the Pro V1 and Pro V1x have gone on sale here and would you say the differences are worth it or would the $5 difference be best to look at the newest version?

Very good job in your testing everyone.  I participated in Team Titleist testing back in October.  The Proto 388 (Prov1) and 348 (Prov1x) balls I found to be an improvement over the previous models.  The number 388 and 348 indicate the number of dimples on the golf ball.  Less dimples less spin.  Pro V1 has a softer feel, less spin and flatter trajectory than Pro V1x, which makes it the preferred model for players who like exceptionally long distance, the ability to flight shots, and score with precision and touch. Prov1x is most frequently  recommended for players with launch conditions that are naturally low in height and low in spin.  Have already picked a couple of dozen of the new Prov1s, actually traded in my -Prov1x.  Love the new the distance and performance and will be stocking up in when Titleist has their loyalty program, where you purchase three dozen and only pay for three.  What a deal.  Great job everyone!!!!!!!!!!

I still have 2 sleeves of the Pro V1 left, and 1 unopened sleeve of Pro V1x. I played a sleeve of the Pro V1x in Florida for two rounds and have two balls left from that sleeve. I lost one to the water. The gator can have that one, I'm not risking it over any golf ball, not even a Pro V.

I don't have enough experience with the old version to say if the new one cuts through the wind any better, but the wind I played in that week was absolutely murdering my carry distance when going into the wind. I didn't seem to have a lot of issues with wind coming from the sides, but directly into the wind was tough.

I think I have been converted. I won pro shop credit this week in a tournament and my only thought was "buy as many Pro V1s as you can." With the changes going on at Snell at the moment, I KNOW the Pro Vs are a great ball and work for me. Yes they are expensive and it is unlikely I would see a HUGE drop off with Vice or Snell but, when money is no object, I go for the Pro V1s every time. They just make an excellent and reliable product.
