What’s going on fellow Spies?!

Excited to be given this opportunity to test out Titleist’s newest and latest iteration of their ProV1 golf balls … and of course, a huge thank you to Jamie @GolfSpy_APH for selecting me to be a part of this test/review.

A quick background on me; I’ve been in the finance industry for the past 17 years, and really in the last 4 years, has the work/life balance aspect of my job been a blessing to our family. It has allowed me to squeeze in more practice sessions at the range and on the course … all while finding myself obsessing over data, reviews, articles, lessons, pointers, launch monitors, golf equipment … and all in an obsessive attempt to get better.

Prior to working in finance, I was in the golf industry for quite some time just after college. Took the PAT and went thru the PGM program for a short window, before deciding I was getting burned out and was ready for a career change.

With that said, there was a time in my life where I was significantly better than where I am today, LOL … and I’ll constantly get complimented on my swing from new playing partners or as the ringer in the group, only to see the shock on their faces when I have a bad hole. Hahaha One of these days I’ll be able to attend a Regional MGS meet-up and some of you will see what I’m talking about.

Biggest strength in my game is wedge, short game and putting … I’m very much a feel player, especially when I’m on or around the green and like to play a ball that feels predictable to me. And while it hasn’t been as of late, it is my tee/driver game that is generally my weakest.

And as for the golf ball I generally play the most, is the Vice Pro … did buy 2 dzn Callaway Chrome Soft LS recently and have found myself liking them quite a bit. Did go thru 2 dzn of TP5s earlier in the summer and found them to have too much spin to my liking. I’d say my somewhat of a high ball hitter with some of a slight fade to straight shot with all my clubs.

Ranking in order of what I’m looking for in a golf ball …

1. Feel (have noticed I tend to favor golf balls in the 88 to 100 compression range)

2. Ability to behave well in the wind

3. Greenside spin

4. Distance

5. Value/cost

FINAL REVIEW

Fellow MGSpies, Happy New Year! How hope springs eternal at the turn of the calendar year into 2023, and yet how rarely does that eternal spring of hope translate into a positive outcome for our respective golf games. Lol And yet it is our collective love of this game that keeps us coming back for more.

As always, a huge thank you to Titleist & MGS, the mods/admins and @GolfSpy_APH for selecting me to be a part of this Titleist White Box review. And while there were other previous review opportunities throughout the year that I would have liked to have been a part of, I’m honestly surprised by how I enjoyed being a part of this review.

My golf game, to summarize, is too much of a Jekyll and Hyde at times with much of how my round is going determined by my current headspace. However if there’s one consistency and strength to my game, it’s that of my short game with strong putting stats and a creative wedge game around the greens … I’ll also add that my driver/tee game has been, rather shockingly, very strong as of late. Played yesterday (with Maxfli Tours) and finished my round with an FIR of 86% and my longest drive coming in at 273.

My handicap is trending downward back to a 12, with typical scores coming in the mid to high 80s and low 90s … with an occasional 100+ sprinkled in. And in the past 4 years, I have shot 79 twice. Prior to being in my current position within finance, I was in the golf industry for many years, took the PAT and enrolled in the PGM program … and it’s my prior experience that allows me to catch lightening in bottle once in a great while and post a low score. Also, as a local area h/s golf coach and being in a job with a good work/life balance (along with almost year-round golf weather here in Charleston, SC), it’s been a blessing with how accessible the game has been for me. And how I wish my entire golf game was blessed as well. Haha!

What do I want from my golf ball … I want it to be predictable and consistent, excel around the green and as a last request on my check list, I’d most certainly like for it to go far off the tee. My stock shot is a straight to slide fade with my irons and wedges, with a relatively high ball flight … and when my driver is on, and I’m swinging freely, it’s a towering ball-flight with a slide fade that rarely gets much of any rollout. And it is my high ball-flight that has always led me to the “non-x” lower-flighted lines of golf balls from OEMs.

Now the meat & potatoes of this review …

Looks & Durability: 14 out of 15

- There is just something so classically and elegantly simple & clean about Titleist golf balls and just its overall premium feel to them … and the 348/388 Protos did not disappoint

- For both Protos, those that made it through an entire 18 hole round, all came away unscathed

- Did take off just 1 point for the 348 did take a bit of a scuff mark with bunkers shots during testing

0BC60467-004F-4D00-BB81-0ABD5985FBDC.jpeg.8ec2ff76f6a5538cb6b29d97766c2936.jpeg

- I’d have absolutely no concern regarding both short-term and long-term durabilities of these golf balls

- Compared to that of the Vice Pro and Maxfli Tour line of balls that I have been both playing regularly, these Titleist Protos absolutely outperform them both in the durability department. With the Maxfli Tour rarely ever making it through a whole round without some type of scuff from iron, wedge play. And the Vice Pros occasionally making it through a full round

Sound & Feel: 15 out of 15

- This is an area that is hugely important to me as a feel player, and it wasn’t much of a surprise that both the 348s & 388s excelled in this area

- The 348 being the ‘x’ line, I can certainly feel the difference from the 388 with it being slightly firmer and clicky off the face of the putter

- The 388 being the ‘non-x’ line, it was most definitely my preferred ball while putting

- For both golf balls with feel off the driver and irons, for me and my swing type, they really did both feel the same … if anything, I’d say they felt incredibly crisp. And this will sound crazy, but so much so in that it’s confidence inducing during play

- But for feel off the wedges and chipping around the green, it was most definitely the 388 as the winner. I know that for some golfers, this can be difficult to discern between the two, but it’s very much noticeable to me

On Course Performance: 37 out of 40

- For me and my game, the absolute biggest difference between the 348 & 388 Protos were with the driver and green side performance

- For iron play, for me, there wasn’t any discernible difference

- But oh my goodness, off the tee with the driver, the 348 absolutely FLIES and it absolutely TOWERS into the air forever. I’m telling you, this is absolutely not an exaggeration. As other testers will state, the difference in peak ball flight between the 348 & 388 off the driver is massive

CD6BE940-7285-4016-BF80-94D246290B90.jpeg.4e7e1b6791cb021f51afbfe2710858e9.jpeg

- And as a high ball hitter as it is, I was shocked by how much I personally loved the 348s already towering ball flight. And for me, it performed very well in the wind and was easily giving me a little more extra distance off the tee compared to that of the 388

- For green-side performance, for me, it was easily hands down the 388 that excelled in this area … from 75 yards in, around the green, bump-n-runs, flop shots, bunker shots; I much preferred the 388

- The 348s, to me, just felt a bit firm and almost hot off the face when I was in and around the green (even the ball flight on my flop shots appeared to be higher with the 348s). This is something that obviously can be adjusted and acclimated to over time, but this is where I knocked 3 points off

EAC3203A-9A4C-4BF4-B47C-1AB47C98BC9C.jpeg.710e4219fd8a5e8fce2caf901b9fc19c.jpeg

- For these two Prototypes, I really cannot find any weaknesses to them, none

- Did the respective golf balls improve my score??? I mean, somewhat yes. Maybe not so much on a full round basis, but on a hole to hole situational basis, they most certainly did. I cannot stress enough just how high the ball flight was for me with the 348s and how my approach shots were just a bit more closer than they usually were with different balls in the past. And the amount confidence they gave me, over time, was noticeable

Miscellaneous: 10 out of 10

- I’m trying to be creative, but there really isn’t too much to add here. I mean, it’s a Titleist … from the logo, the number fonts, the clean and classic look of them, and not to mention their 95+ Ball Lab scores … all miscellaneous items that make this a 10 out 10 for me

Game Bag or Shag Bag: 17 of 20

- These prototypes absolutely are gamers for me … but alas, the price of Titleist per dozen now in the $50 range, is just a tough cost to swallow

- To be fair, there are several local amateur events that I do want to participate in this season, and I’ll absolutely be buying these, but from a weekend round standpoint, it’ll be the DTC golf balls

- From a performance standpoint, both of these prototypes are outstanding with a 20 out of 20, but it’s the cost that knocks 3 points from this category

Conclusion:

This really was a fun and enjoyable review for me and how I thoroughly enjoyed it, and in turn, I feel like my game benefited not just from a getting out on the course and practicing standpoint only … but also in helping me recognize that the ‘x’ line of golf balls from different OEMs should be something for me to consider.

For many of us, there just isn’t enough hours and time (and $$$) in the day to practice all the different OEM line of balls. And I think for many of us, first and foremost is the cost of the golf ball, followed by familiarity, OEM marketing and word of mouth from golfing buddies. And for me, knowing that the 388 line was their Pro-V, I automatically assumed I’d wrap up this review with it being the clear winner for me and my game … but for my next golf purchase, it’ll absolutely be the DTC or OEMs ‘x’ higher ball-flight line of golf balls, and it’ll require some short game practice for me to get adjusted and used to firmer and clicker feel of them, but the added distance is a worthwhile trade-off.

For me, that’s my biggest takeaway from this review in that it isn’t a marketing ploy or gimmick by the OEMs in giving you their regular line and ‘x’ line of golf balls. When played side by side (and I know this may not always be the case) but there is a very discernible difference between the two from a ball-flight off the tee standpoint and for green-side performance.

Final Score: 93 out of 100

Unfortunately due to some of the testers not being able to take part and so on not all the reviews will be in order, however I will do a front end message and link all the posts there so it is easily accessible for all when it does come time to review!

@mikeanthony Will be joining this test now.

I also want to truly thank those who were open and honest about their ability to do a review or having other priorities and backing out to make room for another tester. It goes a long ways in our eyes as mods and we appreciate the honesty when it comes to being able to test and provide a good review for the community.

We have a great group, some will be able to do more on course reviews where as others will be getting more indoor data which makes for an exciting variation of reviews for this test!

Hi folks, a little about me:

My name is Jerry, I'm a married father of three living about an hour west of Chicago.  My son, Owen, and I took up golf last year and have been hooked ever since.  I'm hovering near a 20 handicap.  I play regularly but am still very much a hack.  This is my second MGS test.  Last year I had the opportunity to test the ShotScope V3 watch ( https://forum.mygolfspy.com/tests/22-shot-scope-v3/?do=findReview&review=62 -spoiler: its pretty cool).

Excited about the opportunity to test some new balls.  This will be interesting.  Midwestern weather is tricky this time of year and I don't know how many balls I will get for the test.  Can't afford to lose them all on the first hole!  Might be more indoor testing than outdoor?  I've never had a gamer ball; I've played a wide variety of balls this year and am currently in the camp that, for me, the ball doesn't matter too much.  Will this change my mind?

You will get 2 dozen total golf balls. 1 Dozen of each!

We have several handicaps 8 and lower and several in the high swing speed category (101-110).

If you have questions about how we select our testers it is all covered in our how to become a tester thread.

While there were some that may have better suited the low low hdcp and higher swing speed we require members who are active and going to participate in the forum discussion. Location was also a factor.

We have a couple if new testers as well, but they have been active and participated in the forum as is expected for any and all testers selected.

Sorry that you feel you won't find any use in this test.

Posted my intro. It's been a year since my last test and a lot has changed since then. A new bag of clubs, in-progress swing changes, and future investments into my game starting later this week. Obviously I am not the one appease those that want a review from a scratch players with Rory swing speeds, but I will do my best to do justice for the review of these products for what I would consider a more typical golfer.

3. Distance

4. Greenside spin

5. Value/cost

Could be someone that didn't get selected and wanted to see that specific type of tester as he is in that bracket which he mentions.

Questioning the process is fine, we are open and honest about what we require and want from members to be a tester. Sometimes the SM posts can be misleading in how they present the test opportunities with saying like this or that when it really only the forum content we care about.

Hopefully he sticks around and keeps an eye on the test and gets involved to ask questions create some of his own content and then maybe be in consideration for a test down the road.

So moving on! Anyone get the balls yet?

Well, you see, he was nice enough to think that all of us MGS Forum members are in that teeny-tiny percentile of golfers with 5 hdcps or less … NOOOT!!! 😅😅😅

And are they on the way out???! If so, that’s great news! 🙌🏼

Nothing over here yet. I normally play the AVX or Tour Response so I went out and bought a dozen each of the Pro V1 and Pro V1X so I can start to get a feel for them. Once the new ones arrive I will have a better idea of how the old ones play so I will be able to tell the difference.
I was going to say that Titleist should just send all of us testers a dozen each of the old and new then decided I should just be grateful for what we are getting.

Fellow Testers … if price was never of a concern, which golf ball would be in play for you year-round?

Not to be a homer due to the company being tested, but for me it would be the ProV1s … with the Chrome Soft LS being a surprisingly close 2nd at the moment.

There may or may not be a Garmin Approach R10 in mail soon, but I’ll be very curious to see how the new Titleists compare to the CS LS with the driver off the tee.

An interesting thought.  I'm not consistent enough to have a gamer ball currently.  This season I've played Triads, TreoSofts, Avants, Velocities, e6s, Tour Responses, Distance+s, Power Softs, and others I'm forgetting.  Mostly because of price and losing so many.  I've also played a handful of TP5s, AVXs, and ProV1s.  I can't say that I've noticed much difference in any of the above balls.

Quite frankly, that's what I'm looking forward to with this test.  Given the opportunity to get out and play, I'm going to play and I don't put much thought into it.  But with the weather turning, I might not get that chance and will be required to spend time at my net or at a simulator to get some harder evidence.  Will it show me that the quality is worth the cost?

To the question at hand, there are reasons Titleist is the top brand, and a big one is their top notch quality control.  If money were no issue I would want something that varies as little as possible and is a constant top performer.  For me it would be some version of the ProV or the AVX.

Or possibly the Wilson Chaos for different color options during fall golf 😁

The only reason why the Z-star diamond is in my signature, was because they're cheaper than V1x when the promo is running. They've been decent, but for me the V1x ticks all of the boxes, except price. I think the Bridgestone Tour BX is better in the wind, but greenside spin with that ball is 404 - not found (for me). That's why I was excited to hear that the new V1/x are supposed to be better in the wind, and why I signed up.

Money-no-object though, I would find it hard to believe everyone on the forums couldn't find a Titleist ball that fit their game, which is why they're the most played ball on tour.
