Souvenirs and Mementos

After discussion in another thread, the topic of course souvenirs was raised. What do you buy from the courses that you visit?

For me, it is pin flags and towels. I hang them in my office. I really like the ones from events too. I have one from the Torrey US Open that is great to look at.

I haven't been to many places that sell souvenirs other than golf balls so that's what I have... only about 6 so that shows how many places I've been outside my normal local courses...

I like having towels from different golf course, as well as ball markers and logo balls. But I have a scorecard and pencil from every course I have ever played (except a few: TPC Boston, Dedham Country and Polo I think are the only 2 I don't have).

I think this year, I am going to start collecting logo golf balls from different places I play.

I used to buy hats, shirts, or something momento-ish, but a few years back (I don't even remember where) I heard someone say "spend your money on making memories, not buy useless momentos". Since then, I try to follow that suggestion.

Great advice. I think I will use it. More money for me to spend on balls I will actually use.

That is a good quote. Often times, for me, though finding such a trinket is just the thing to trigger a memory of the round. That is why I have the flags in my office. When work rears up a bit, it is nice to be able to trigger the memory by looking at the Pebble flag.

No edit needed IMHO, point taken. That's a good piece of advice.

Fair enough.

I haven't been able to play Pebble yet....and I've even got a connection of a sort. Something like my 3rd cousin is married to the guy that's President and CEO of The Pebble Beach Company that owns and runs the place. An intermediary family member that's closer to my 3rd cousin, and that has been out there 2 or 3 times to visit, told me "give them a call, they'll get you on". So I call...well...email, and the response I get is that they (Pebble) are booked up for something like 4 or 5 years out, but he'll get me a tee time if I stay in the Lodge for something like $415/night. Oh....and I was still gonna have to pay for the round.

Needless to say, I said "thanks, but no thanks".

Geez, not even your own family can get you on. I didn't think it was booked that far in advance.

I tend to buy divot tools for some reason. I never want too, but I end up doing it anyway. I must have 75 of them, worst part is I get sick of them and just end up giving most of them away anyway.

I have a revolving WITB policy.

I was disappointed to say the least. Especially since the intermediary relative had told me they had told the guy about me previously being in the golf business, and them telling me to contact the guy and that he'd help me out. However, I can understand, I guess. I had never met the guy...only knew his wife (that was a member of my extended family)...and I hadn't seen her in several years.

I collect logo balls from virtually every course that I play at. I also keep balls that mark special achievements (first time breaking 90, etc). For really special courses (Spyglass, Kapalua), I have flags, too.

Did you make your own Golf Ball display Matt? I was thinking about asking you after I made my post about collecting them...

That was one of my first thoughts when I saw the putter display cases... I am going to need to get one by the end of this season, and a custom made one from a member of the board would be nice...

I didn't, my wife bought it for me about 4 years ago, before I was building things.

I certainly could build one...if you've got a real interest in one feel free to send me a PM telling me how big you'd like it to be, the wood you'd like, if you want a door or back on it, etc, and I can give you a ballpark quote.

I'll be up front about the fact that it will be hard for me to compete on price with the ones that are mass produced. Mine holds 56 balls and was about $100. That's economy of scale right there, and I can't beat it.

Regardless, I appreciate you both thinking of me. Any time you've got questions, just shoot me a PM.

I like to collect poker chip ball markers. I have 3 that I have collected from courses in Hawaii and an Odyssey one. I am not to sure why but I like the poker chip markers because one they are huge and easy to see on the green but I also like the course logos on them.

Are these metal or like playing chips? I saw US Open poker chips at the shop, but they were metal and very heavy. I may have picked it up if it was like a normal playing chip.

There are some that are metal and I would like to find a few but the ones I have are exactly like regular playing chips. I just like the size, weight and most of them have some neat designs on them.

Poker chips are probably the coolest souvenir in the pro shop here at Legends. They're one of the few things with the SC flag, which I really like. Problem is, I don't really have any use, or more correctly, place to put, a poker chip.

Buy one and then "loose" it in a pocket in your bag. When you find it again down the road, you will think about the great time you are having on the internet talking to us while you are on vacation. :D

I would think that a Custom woodworker like youself, would be able to create a custom chip rack to display all those chips. When you create a prototype, Let me know. I might be in the market.

Hahahaha. We're recovering from golf before dinner and checking up on scores. I'm actually thinking about trying to fit one into my golf ball cabinet behind the balls from the courses we're playing on this trip.

Just find someone who knows how to extend the cabinet depth and can router slots in for you.
