How Do You Organize Your Bag?

Recommended Posts

I have had the same bag for a number of years now and have my system for organization. However I am curious how everyone else organizes their bags.

For me every club has its place and every place has a club for it. Of course there are many different bags and variations, however for me I have a 15 slot bag and goes as follows.
Screenshot_2022-10-29-11-30-21-10_965bbf4d18d205f782c6b8409c5773a4.jpg

I should mention this flips if I am in a cart as the bag needs to be rotated around. Either way
Driver goes top middle, in this case the putter well. As it is often used and front and center for me this is the go to spot. If it is flipped then I usually put it in the right slot of the two.
3 wood goes next slot down on the left and to the right of the driver goes whatever other long club is in the bag, this case it is a 7 wood, however hybrid, 2 iron or any of the others that make it in or out of the bag go here.

In between the woods are my 4 crossover and 5 iron. 4 Iron always on the right and 5 iron always on the left.

The next row down in the middle are my 6 and 7 irons. 7 iron on the right and 6 on the left. I think this is because I use my 7 more often so naturally being right handed it is a more accessible spot.

To the left side I go Pitch then A wedge below with the 8 then 9 on the opposite side of that. I like this rather than zig zagging down as A-8 are used a lot and they are suited well here to find, grab and replace. The separation between the wedges and irons for me is also nicer in terms of organization.

In the middle of the irons are my 54,58 again with the 54 being on the right as it is used more often and also doesn't get interfered with when grabbing the putter.

Finally putter goes left side.

I have used other bags with different tops, but this always seems to be my go to way of organizing my bag. I also have the same spots for gloves, balls, tees and all that however again that is largely dependent on the bag itself.

So how about you? What does yours look like and why do they go where they go?

Your chart should be labeled Chaos to Full CDO (OCD in the correct alphabetical order…)

I miss my 14 way divider.  My bag has a 6 way and goes clockwise from upper right: 3w & Putter;  8,9,P;  G,S,L;  6,7;  5h,4,h,5w;  Driver.  So the longest clubs and Putter (most used) sit the the top; scoring and most used on the right; distance/longer on the left. Because the bag rides on a push cart I need the longest at the top. As I sit here and think about it I might flip the wedges with the short irons - seems I’m always grabbing a wedge and putter at the same time but that’s a different story…

I dont think i could not have a set spot for a club. Chaos would just be awful. I had my dad caddie for me and he didn't know where the clubs were suppose to go and just put them in wherever. I went to the bag to grab a club and had a small panic attack haha

I like having mine organized longest too shortest from left to right. I like being able to know where each club is and goes in the bag. Right now, I have it set up for sitting on the trolley with the longest clubs near the front.

With the Q Follow, it's not a problem to have it set up opposite since the handle allows for easy retrieval no matter where they're placed. I don't like taking the chance of the iron heads rattling into the graphite shafts of my woods.

I have a W/S 5 Way stand bag.  The top slot is for woods; driver, 3W, Heavenwood, 9W.  The middle left slot is for 4-6 irons; middle right slot is for my Ping mallet putter.  The bottom left slot is for 7-9 irons; bottom right slot is for PW, SW, LW.  Wish I had a dedicated putter well.

The individual club slots don't work well for my midsize Pure DTX grips.

😇 Not me to make fun of anyone with OCD ocd-funny-pictures.jpg.acfe9843fec71a914fadea2de6058b53.jpg as mine is acquired courtesy of the US Army school of behavior modification.  Proof I don't have clinical OCD is my glaring spelling error for Drizzle Stik in the bag arrangement image below.

292095471_Screenshot2022-10-30101840.jpg.207ab79af5aef59520679879e916a288.jpg

This bag organization is for push cart (it gets adjusted for riding cart) with longest clubs in top row (except for putter in it's well always with cover-on to prevent mallet head damage on big dog shafts).

Generally clubs increase in loft in a lazy Z pattern from upper left to lower right in an easy mental flow, irons start in the second row.  Bottom row is modified to put shortest shaft clubs in the corners and the 9i is my chipping club so it is an easy grab.  The bottom and widest slot has 2 clubs and with Drizzle Stik doing a good job keeping them separated.

12643668_10_10.20225thfairway(3)400h.jpg.c86884b5a2f2b63d991285fe7a368e89.jpg

On a rain-day the only modification to this lineup is the Drizzle Stik put in the left side of the putter well where it shelters the entire bag top.  The rain-day consideration is also why the ball retriever is in the top row, with a big club cover it supports my bag rain cover (AKA a hooded raincoat) making all clubs easy access.  Drizzle Stik umbrella completing the total rain protection for clubs, raincoat cover keeping the rest of the golf bag dry.

What is in the golf bag pockets (and on the golf bag rings and push cart handle attachment points) is sufficient to meet any needs while playing and provides adequate ballast so that wind gusts won't blow the bag and cart over with a 72" vented golf umbrella in the handle mount (so far has withstood strong gusts greater than 20mph).

I have a several year-old Cleveland 14-way cart bag with a separate putter tube (which I used when I play but not when I store my clubs).  Our course requires carts and I typically drive.  With that in mind, here's my club layout from top to bottom and left to right:

                 5 wood--Driver--3wood

          7 iron--6 iron--5 hybrid--7 wood

52 degree wedge--Pitching wedge--9 iron--8 iron

   56 degree wedge--Putter--60 degree wedge

I use this layout because I'm anal retentive enough to try and put the clubs in descending order of distance.  But, since I typically drive, I like to be a bit more practical by having my most used clubs (driver, 5 wood, 52 degree wedge, pitching wedge, 56 degree wedge and putter) to be on the left so they are easier to access to those clubs.  The right side is typically blocked a bit they my playing partner's clubs.

Ping G430 Max driver 10.5 degrees with an Alta Quick45 gram senior shaft
Callaway Epic 3 wood, Project X Evenflow Green 45 gram senior shaft
Callaway GBB Epic Heavenwood, with a Mitsubishi Diamana 50 gram senior shaft
Ping G 20.5 degree 7 wood, with a stock Alta 65 gram senior shaft
Ping G 26 degree hybrid, stock Alta 65 gram senior shaft

My bag is organized much like sirchunksalot as shown below when I am on a riding cart. If I am walking using my MGI, the order is flipped (D-4W-OW next to putter), except for the putter, to maintain access to pockets. But whatever works for you, there's no right way.

It's also a little easier to avoid leaving clubs behind if you assign a set spot for every club, especially as you get older...🥴

Some of the guys I play with have bags with 4-6 slots instead of 14-15 like I have, and they lose clubs more often because they don't notice until they need that club again which may be much later in the round. One of the benefits of 14-15 slots is you notice open spots sooner IME. And clubs slide in and out more easily with 14-15 slots than with 4-6, as counterintuitive as that may seem.

I switched from a 14 slot stand bag. I got tired of doing battle taking my clubs in and out and switched to a bag with 6 slots. It works much better.

Upper left - Crossover, 5 & 6 irons. Upper right, 7, 8, 9 irons.

For cart or stand bag I use the same layout.

Lowest side of the bag has clubs go in shortest to longest starting at left side.  Both bags have 14 individual slots so clubs will be organized the same no matter which bag I use.

14 top cart bag. When I walk I use a foldable hand cart that holds the cart bag design well.

I agree with someone's comment about dedicated spots for each club helping to detect when you leave one behind.

My next purchase might be a Sunday stand bag with a 4 or 6 way top to keep in my trunk for the driving range and if I do that I'll likely use it to walk my local executive course with 9 or 10 clubs.

I'm not a fan of my cart bag on windy days, as much as I like the organization.

We are back to push carts at the course so I don't have to use the carry bag which is a 7 way carry bag and back to my OGIO 14 way which makes me so happy. Tweaked a bit with where the longer clubs went up top, but feels so good to have my normal setup with the wedges in the middle, PW and AW on the left and 8 and 9 on the right.

I'll get another photo later!

I have a 14 way bag (2021 Sun mountain C130s), which I find much more useful for organization and making sure I don't leave a club behind.  I follow the left to right, highest to lowest pattern, except up top, as the center slot is wider, so I go 3w / driver / 5w there.  I have a separate putter slot at the top of the bag, above that.  This configuration, as seen in the picture,  is what I use when I am on a push cart. Because of the way the divider on this bag is set up, it looks a bit strange here, as there are 2 middle row slots that hold my 8 and 9 irons, but they look out of place. Apparently Sun Mountain changed this divider layout in the newer models.  If I am riding, I swap all of the clubs to their opposite position, so the tallest clubs are in the back, wedges and putters closest to me.  It just takes a minute or so before the round and I find that it makes getting to the clubs while on a golf cart much easier.

Great question. Until a couple years ago I had my clubs all willie nillie in my bag. As the years go by, my eyes worsened,  so I had to better organize my bag. Since the organization I have stopped grabbing my 6 instead of my 9. I also have stopped grabbing my 50 degree instead of my 56. I have a 14 slot Ping bag which I organize tall to short and right to left since I am a lefty.

In my  PING  DLX cart bag:

·         Wood:  PING G425 Max 5 wood

·         Wedge: Callaway Mack Daddy 50, 52, 56, 60

·         Putter:  Scotty Cameron Newport 2.5

·         Balls:  Titleist Tour Soft

I've got a 5 way divider in my bag. Top section is driver, fairway, putter. Middle sections are 5h/6i, then 7i/8i/9i.

Bottom two sections are PW/GW then 54*/58*. It works well for me, although I will say that I want my next bag to have a separate putter well.

I have  ping E 4 series bag that I've had for 10 years or so and can't seem to part with it. It's a 4-way divider and I always go driver-to-wedges top down. So in order Top hole is (driver, 3-wood, 4-Hybrid, Putter) Middle left spot (4-6 Iron), Middle Right (7-9 Iron), Bottom (Wedges 46,50,54,58). This tends to work for me whether I'm riding or walking. Only complaint on the 4-way is the grips twisting and getting stuck.

two wedges in front with the 54 beside the putter because I usually need both for most holes. Though I am bumping and running more with the 7 these days. other than that grouped by high irons low irons/hybrid, and then woods in the back. I am still hitting the 5-bubble shaft well, so it stays in the bag. Speaking of bags, I am getting a new one soon and it will be a 14 full sleeve, because I find the grips getting caught up with each other now.

Something a little different in my Ping Hoofer Lite:

  • Driver on the right
  • All the single length ladies (hybrids and irons) in the back
  • Wedges on the left
  • Putter in the front

It's basically a clockwise arrangement from short clubs to long clubs.
