How many rounds do you manage using the same ball?

Dweed

Recommended Posts

I'm curious as to how many rounds or holes for that matter before you change out your ball?  Do some just keep using the same ball until it is lost or gets scuffed up too bad?  Every round a new ball is used? There are so many members with varying handicaps I just thought it would be interesting to hear about. Have fun.

I normally put a new ball in play every round and will keep it in play for the whole 18 (assuming it isn't lost or drowned during play).  I will take a ball out of play that has become scuffed from a cart path or otherwise damaged even slightly.  When I'm playing a more casual round, I'll often just grab one that has been played but still in good condition.  Scuffed or blemished balls will be tossed or added to a shag bag.   Before moving here, I used to take bags of used golf balls to the VA hospital for their course.

I'm happy when a ball simply lasts a full round truthfully. Although it worked a little better for me this year where i had a few last 20+ holes.

Usually mine get lost rather than blemished to the point I can't use them.

Yep! That's me!!  I usually start a round with one slightly used ball and one that I don't care if I lose.  I'll play the good one on most holes and the other on the 3 holes where I could put it into water.  There is no OB that I could reach with my worst shot, and the trees are not so thick that you can't find the ball.  That's not to say that I haven't lost a ball in the rough!  Most rounds I will end with the same two balls.  If I lose the old ball, the newer one becomes my old ball and I introduce a new ball.  I have kept a ball in play for a month playing 2-3 rounds a week.  On the other hand I have lost both balls on the same hole... more than once!!!

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

I always start a round with a new ball. I'll toss scuffed ones into my shag bag and I'll only grab one of those if I run low on new balls, which thankfully is happening less and less.

I generally play a ball as long as I can without losing it or sending it for a swim.  I play a tight course with lots of trees and very thick Bermuda rough.  If I don’t track a shot in the rough, it’s easy to lose one.  That said, until it won’t clean up or is bruised from hitting a tree or a cart path, it stays in play.  I have had a few that have made it through 54 holes.

It's very unusual for me to get an entire round out of a single ball. I did have one that went 31 holes last year, and just lost one last week that went over 36 holes - but again that's highly unusual. I usually lose 1-3 balls a round...🥴 In my defense, my home course has knee to waist high rough (second cut) in quite a few places, and fall leaves aren't helping right now.

It's very rare for me to wear out a ball. I have lost a couple that literally had one stroke, into the woods off the first tee...🤫

I play a ball until it is lost.   I typically just grab a ball from my bag and off we go.  I can go 5/6 rounds without losing a ball or I can lose 2/3 in a single round.  Depends on course and season (lots of leaves this time of year).

I appreciate your all's input and honesty. 1 good take away for me was when Caddie1966 mentioned his ball had been marked up from hitting a tree. Good to hear. I've had a mild battle going with friends who stated that wood couldn't make a permanent mark on a ball and I was of the opposite opinion. Thanks all.

As with many others above, I'll pull a ball out of my bag and will keep it in play (typically for multiple rounds) until it meets its demise in water, mangroves or OB.   Right now, I think I'm on my fourth or fifth straight round with my OnCore Vero X1 ball.  Given my home course, Key West Golf Club, with narrow fairways, water, mangroves and/or OB on just about every hole, that's pretty good.

Even though I don't lose too many golf balls, I know for certain there are a bunch of people who do and have to put multiple other balls in play!  As the Southernmost golf course, we have a lot of visitors who play our course.   Since many are not familiar with course and underestimate the trouble out there, it's amazing how many golf balls that I find without even trying during a normal round of golf.   I would conservatively say it's 2-4 balls a round (again without even trying).   Even giving away balls to my playing partners who like certain brands, I have to do a ball purge about once a month just to keep my cart bag weight down so the course staff do not get hernias.

I put a ball in play until it is damaged or lost. It can be one round or a dozen rounds. I make it a challenge to see how long I can keep one in play. It helps that my club  has a limited amount of cart paths. Usually right by the tee box and by the green in the cart parking area. So damage isn't much of a concern.

Same for me.  On my home course I seldom lose a ball, but I lost 3 the last time I played due to the fallen leaves.  If I play an unfamiliar or difficult course, I make sure to have plenty of extra balls in the bag.  If a ball becomes scuffed, it goes into the practice bucket.

I’ve played up to approx 60 holes, primarily with Srixon Q Star Tour.  By that time, the color gets worn some.  Usually before that time, it goes in my left pocket and used for drops or replacement of a lost ball.  I lose balls infrequently so not uncommon to semi retire a ball from play, but eventually will lose.  I might use it on a tee that has a water hazard in play.

... I start with a new ball every round. Back in the Midwest I often played a ball for 36 but the harsh desert conditions can make a new ball look old in a few holes. Being a desert, everything is sand based and even keeping the ball in the middle of the fairway and on every green 🤥  it will still look used. Not that the used look neccessarily effects performance but why take the chance and I just don't like playing with "range balls" which is how they look to me. New and used for one round:

I normally lose just under one ball per round.  So most of the time "fate", "karma", "the golf gods collecting their toll", will force me to break out a new ball before it has a chance to get too scuffed to be played.  I actually just for the first or second time I can recall, ceremoniously depositing a ball in the pond next to 18, after finishing a round.  I think that was the 3rd round I had gotten out of it, and while not lost it had struck some trees, a cart path or two, and when I looked at it, I decided it was too beat up to attempt a fourth round.

I will go 4-5 rounds without losing a ball, but I stop using them if they get scuffed at all. There is one hole where I play that has a cart path cut right across the fairway right about the distance of an off center strike with the driver, I must have ruined about a dozen golf balls on that cart path this year.

Anyone have a specific brand of golf ball that seemed to last longer than another? Not so much relevant now, but the golf balls that lasted me the longest on course were some of the older Nike RZN blacks. It really is a golf ball that I miss and really enjoyed playing. I had several last 27 plus holes... since then Tour Response has been a ball that seems to stay in play for longer before being lost.

Usually I'll play with same ball for whole round then toss it back to my bag as a practice ball or toss it into a box for my son to use. He's about 25-30 HC and often loses the ball. When my ball gets scuffed up due to cart paths, I'll change it.

When I lose my ball, it's often to watery graves on couple par 5 holes at my home club, Silo Ridge CC.

It depends on when I put the last new ball in play. If I put it in play half way through the previous round I probably start the next round with it. I won't go more than 36 holes with a ball and that is pretty rare. We have coquina/sand cart paths (no drops) that don't really mar a golf ball. Trees will discolor a ball but most of my damage comes from bladed bunker shots. Occasionally I will lose a ball in a water hazard, whoops, penalty area.  Also, we have an older tree with an opening in the base that is just right of the 18th green. Many times I will toss my ball in that opening to pay homage to the golf trolls/tree monkeys in hopes that I will get favorable bounces my next round. Since I learned back in the day of O-ring and balata balls, 3 new balls per round + 1 (for a provisional (usually a colored ball).  As I said back in the day of balata balls it was easy for your ball to become unplayable (scuffs, smiles).  So it's hard for me to play a ball for more than 6 holes whether the ball is good, like clockwork, change every 6 holes.  Expensive, yes, but at 82 I shoot my age or better most of the time.

I start out with a new ball however at the end of the round if it is unscathed it goes in my bag's top pocket to use again.  Otherwise it goes to the basement pocket and won't get used again.  Sometimes when they accumulate I'll throw them in the washer with a bunch of towels then pick out the good ones.  I donate the scuffed ones to a teaching pro.
