Bobbers
The Greater Milwaukee Open always ended up with crappy dates and, as a result, weak fields. It passed into oblivion completely; no sponsor wanted to use a weak field/bad date tournament as an advertising vehicle. My guess is there are always going to be one or two events that sponsors are seriously thinking about abandoning. Sad, but that's life in the 21st century. Crashtestdummy
I can see why. The Honda Classic was getting railroaded by the high profile tournaments before and after. It will be interesting to see if Honda moves to LIV as a sponsor instead. Dog Faced Pony Soldier and MGoBlue100
FightingScot82
The profile of events used to be dictated by TV ratings or calendar timing. Now the players are being more selective of which events they play in - plus there are upstarts causing issues like the PNC Championship (which really should be in Pittsburgh, but whatever). I feel like the Pebble Beach Pro-Am has lost its luster, too. Now that sponsorship isn't a regional thing anymore (see: PNC Championship in Florida or Waste Management in Phoenix) someone will step up. I'm kind of surprised we haven't seen an event with a golf brand lead sponsor. That probably would open a huge can of worms. While there are some player/sponsor conflicts with corporate sponsorship, I wonder how TM and TM sponsored players would react to a Callaway sponsored event; as an example. Would they not play in the event or go all out and try and put their sponsor in the winners circle. vandyland
I mean, I don't blame them. One of the longest tenured sponsors on tour (until now) and this was their Top 10 at the end of last year's tournament. No disrespect to any of the players here but you have Shane Lowry, Daniel Berger, Gary Woodland (who hasn't been in great form for the last few years) and then a bunch of "guys". How many people here could pick Brian Stuard, Lee Hodges and Sam Ryder out of lineup? Go ahead and try without googling, try to name these players. I watch the tour most weeks and I would probably get 1 out of 8 of these guys right. All of them finished in the top 25 of the tournament. Not too unlikely when El Camaleón Golf Club (PGA Mayakoba Classic golf tournament) moved from being a PGA venue to a LIV venue. Obviously the elevated elements come out a 4-5x premium, pay your current rate and take whatever quality you get or put your money someplace else. Would I be mad if I wasn’t chosen for an elevated event, sure I’d be pretty loving knowing that the chances go down to have a top tier lineup.
