2024 What is safe in your bag? What's on the chopping block?

To BKervin, and others, I have a 3 wood that I use for driving on tighter fairways, it is a traditional rounded bottom shape.  It is a Callaway Steelhead Xr.  I have an older Adams Low Profile 3 wood, that I use hitting from the fairway, which I do a lot since I don't drive long.  It has a flatter bottom, that is what Low Profile means.  It gives me a nice look that I can get a clean strike on a good lie and the shaft works great for me.

#1  PXG 0211 10.5 deg, Evnflo Riptide CB 40 gram A flex.

3W: Callaway Steelhead Xr,  Tensei Blue CK 55 gram A flex.

5W : Titleist TSi 1,    Aldila Ascent 40 regular flex.

Driving Iron: Mizuno MP 18 MMC Fli-Hi 3i 18 degree, Recoil 95 reg flex.

4 iron:  GFF Mizuno Fly-Hi, 24 degree forged hollow body,  Aerotech Steelfiber 😍😃💥.

5 Hybrid: Mizuno (2017) JPX Fli-Hi wave tech, Recoil ESX 460 reg flex.

Irons: 6 - PW: Ping I 500, on Recoil Smacwrap ES 760, reg flex.

Wedges: 2 x Mizuno S5 52/09.  1@ 50 deg, 1@ 54 deg; New (July 2024) Mizu ES 21, 58 x 08, jet black.

Chipper: Don Martin "Up n In" brass/bronze. 🙂

Putter: Odyssey Stroke Lab "R" Ball, face balanced, with 2 piece Stroke Lab multi material shaft.🙃💘

Just did a near complete overhaul of my bag. I've had the Wilson Staff D-Fy irons for more years than I'd like to admit and just picked up the PXG 0211 XCOR2 5-GW, 0311 Gen5 4 hybrid, and still looking to add the 0311 Gen5 3 wood. I'm still using my Taylormade SLDR driver but that will probably be on the chopping block next year. The PXGs have been a huge improvement over my old clubs.

AW is on the chopping block! I got it to have another distance into the green, but I cannot hit it! It is a Taylormade M6. I'm also for sure keeping my PW TM M6 and other wedges that are Lazrus. I do love them!

Driver: TaylorMade M6, stiff, 9°, 45.75"

3W: Lazrus 3 Wood, regular, 15°, 43.5"

3H: Lazrus 3 Hybrid, regular, 18°, 40.75"

5i-PW,AW: TaylorMade M6, steel (PW-43.5°, AW-49° [both 36.00"-D1/C9])

52°W: Lazrus, 52°, 8°, 35.25", D4, Milled face, Forged head, steel

56°W: Lazrus, 56°, 12°, 35.25", D4, Milled face, Forged head, steel

60°W: Lazrus, 60°, 10°, 35.25", D4, Milled face, Forged head, steel

Putter: TaylorMade Spider X Hydroblast, 35", Flow Neck #9 (21° toe hang), KBS Chrome C-Taper Stepless Stability, Superstroke Gtr 1.0 grip

Ball: TaylorMade TP5x, Titleist Pro V1x, experimenting with Snell & Vice

Revisiting this thread.

My current clubs are looking long in the teeth. Nevertheless, everything is safe.

That being said, really intrigued with the recent Paradigm iron test. Looking forward to the driver test. Maybe fairway woods and hybrids to come? However, I have determined I won't buy the first generation of any "new" club. Next years paradigms will be better and you know they are already designed and locked in for future orders by Callaway.

Driver: Callaway Epic 9 degree, stiff (set at 10 degrees with the movable weight in the center}

FW: Callaway Epic 3,5, heaven wood w/ regular shaft (driver shaft in 3 wood, 3 wood shaft in 5 wood, 5 wood shaft in heaven wood, all three set at neutral plus 1 degree)

Hybrids: Callaway BB19 4,6,7 (4 set at neutral plus 1 degree and 6 and 7 set at neutral minus 1 degree for gapping purposes)

Irons: Callaway Rogue ST Max 8, 9, PW

Wedges: Titleist Vokey SM6 50,54,58

Ball: Titleist Pro V1, 1X, Vice Pro Plus or anything I find that day and try out for the fun of it (I haven't bought balls with my own money in at least 10 years)

Our course has a nice box set 1.  It has score cards, pencils, tees, divot tools and pennies for ball markers!  I like the plastic too but I figure my membership pays for those wood tees, therefore, I've been using them.

I carry a 3-wood and a 4-wood (just started doing this two weeks ago). The “3-wood” is 43.25” long and has a 13.5* loft (sort of a “ mini driver“), while the 4-wood is 42.5” long and has 16.5* of loft. You could look at this as having two drivers or two 3-woods, I suppose.

EDIT: That experiment ended after four rounds! I have gone back to my Titleist TS2 4-wood, set to 15.75* loft, with a Callaway Epic Flash Sub-Zero 5-wood, set to 19* loft. I find that this combination, along with my 10.5* Paradym driver and 21* Sub 70 #4 hybrid gives me greater versatility and covers all distances better for me.

Edited by funkyjudge
Edit for latest update

DR - Callaway Paradym AI Smoke Max, Newton Motion 4-Dot shaft

4W - Titleist TSR2, Newton Motion 4-Dot FW shaft

HYB - Sub 70 949X 21*, original HZRDUS Black 85-S shaft

7W (if played) - Titleist TSR, ACCRA TZ6 7S

Irons - Cobra King Forged Tec X, KBS TGI graphite shafts

Wedges - Edison 2.0, 47* (bent to 48*), 53* and 57* (bent to 58*), KBS TGI 100 Tour S

Putter - Evnroll ER10 ""Outback” Mallet

Ball - Maxfli Tour-X CG (2023) or Vice Pro Plus

Bags - Vessel / Ghost stand bags

Cart - MotoCaddy M7 Remote (without the remote)

Spoiler

Lots of short game practice has made this a strength; now the driver is causing problems!

A few years ago I picked up a used Ping 12* driver for $50 and at the time had a Ping i20 10*.  Similar situation as you probably, both had their place in the bag until the i20 face cracked.  Loved that driver.

Driver, Irons, putter aren’t going anywhere. I’m not the least bit interested in changing them.

However, there’s an old saying that “idle hands are the devil’s workshop” and in my case it’s true. After 3 months of the best golf I’ve played in about two years, I severely strained my Achilles tendon and haven’t been able to play the last month.

Since then I’ve bought an E722 15* (arriving today) a 51* E722 GW (arriving tomorrow) an Epic Speed 18* outlet condition for $105 this morning, and a 58-06 RTX Zipcore.
If the 51* GW works out, I’ll be looking to pick up a 56* and seeing whether that setup works out better than the 54 CBX with the RTX 58-06 or the old 58* CBX.

Did I need any of this stuff? Absolutely not, as I said, I’d been playing very well with what I had but I’m always looking to improve my wedge game and my 15* down to 19* setup.
For all I know every single new purchase might be gone within 30 days and all the old stuff will be back in my bag, but you never know if something better is out there if you don’t try! 🤷‍♂️

Gonna tell you what is on the chopping block! My Driver Cobra RADspeed! He does not know it yet but since I am the winner of  TSR 2023 MyGolfSpy PGA Championship Pool Sponsored by Titleist TSR Woods, he is.

Enormous thanks to all the people of MGS and especially @Golfspy_CG2 for making all of this happen. Of course, thanks to the people of :titleist-small: for offering such great prizes!

I will be going for a fitting. I dont want to spoil such a great gift. But as soon as I get the TSR ( and test run it) the old guy is gone!

Is the M6 AW almost blade like compared to the rest of the set? I’m asking because I used to play the Speedblades (which TM came out with about 5 years earlier than the M6) and as much as I loved the 5-PW, I couldn’t hit that AW either. My buddy had the same problem with his M4’s.

I don’t know why they would make one iron so different than the rest of a game improvement set?

Traded in Callaway Maverick Pro irons for Paradym X Driver.  Put Ben Hogan Apex Pro Irons back in the bag & also using Precept Premium Forged Irons.  I don't think the 2004 Ben Hogan grooves are conforming any longer. Love the Dynamic Gold S300 Shaft!
Looking to reshaft the Precept Irons to Nippon 120 or Nippon 130 shafts. Today's irons are 3 to 4 degrees stronger.

Yes, it is. This is my second season with the M6 irons. I cannot understand why they made the wedges different than the rest, like you share. Is it a true blade? Yes, that’s the same as the Speedblade. IMO a Vokey or RTX is more forgiving which shouldn’t be the case for a GI set wedge… not to mention it was a terrible fit in the set. Its yardage was way shorter than the PW, even on the rare occasion I hit it well.

I agree with the yardage! It drops way off from my PW too. Right now my 52 is about 100-110 and my PW is about 145 yards. So I was excited to get the set to have the AW in between. However, dropping off to 120 yards is too much. It would be great at 125-130, on the off chance I could hit it, ha! 🙂  Is there a wedge in between PW & 52 that you would recommend?

Another club I could just not hit was the Taylormade 3 wood - I believe it was a Stealth. I went to a club testing at PGA Superstore. I topped all 10+ shots with the 3 wood. The TM rep then put the 3 wood on the 5 wood shaft and I was great. Got me to wondering about my overall shaft length needs, etc. But I haven't ever done a formal fitting.

The easiest way to fix the yardage gap is to bring your PW and 52* with you to a store where you can try hitting different wedges on a LM to find one that gaps in the way you want. Considering you’re a 14, and the irons you’re playing I would try a 48* or 50* CBX to start my search

BTW you’re not the only mid cap who struggles with hitting a 3W… 😂

Just did a near complete overhaul of my bag. I've had the Wilson Staff D-Fy irons for more years than I'd like to admit and just picked up the PXG 0211 XCOR2 5-GW, 0311 Gen5 4 hybrid, and still looking to add the 0311 Gen5 3 wood. I'm still using my Taylormade SLDR driver but that will probably be on the chopping block next year. The PXGs have been a huge improvement over my old clubs.

Yeah but I paid $450 for the XCOR2s and $135 for the 4 hybrid. The same setup for Gen6 would've cost over $1,900 and that's with the heroes discount. I'm patiently waiting for the Gen5 stiff 3 wood to pop back up at $143. So if anyone else is looking, I call the next one! Haha

I bought my set used through PXG. They listed them as "good" but they're basically brand new. They rate Excellent, Very Good, Good, and Value.

Small world… I have a membership at True Blue/Caledonia, and I’ve known Steve for years! If you’re ever back down this way again book a lesson with either him or Stuart. They’ll make you a serious stick in no time! 😉

What set did you go with? I wasn't fitted by PXG. I've had some lessons recently and went off his guidance. I should probably get the lie adjusted since I should have a -1 but I'm happy so far.

They recommended the 0211Z based on my swing speed and how I swung the clubs in my fitting.

Nice area.  We had a condo in Surfside for years in the 90’s, loved MB but FL won out.
