New (2023?) Maxfli Tour golf balls

Recommended Posts

I was in Dick's last week looking for some Maxfli Tour golf balls and none were out.  I asked the sales clerk and he told me they were out of stock but they had received boxes of "new" tour balls and even a new one called the "Tour S".  But they could not sell them until the release date, which he had no idea when the release date was.  He even brought out a box of the Tour S for me to look at and try to purchase but their system would not allow it until they were released.  I cannot find any information anywhere about these new tour balls.  Does anyone have any information about these balls or know when they will be released?  Sounds like we will need another ball test...

... Most know I absolutely LOVE the Maxfli Tour. Just bought a new Box of 4 dozen with the $20 off $100 deal and $40 in rewards. The only thing I don't like is the CG alignment lines as it makes them look like range balls. My two home courses have ranges right next to #1 and #18 so looking at 10 balls in the fairway it can be difficult to find mine. Pretty minor annoyance but I don't like alignment lines to begin with. The *NEW* Tour balls have a much better CG marking with no lines:

Do we know what the "S" stands for? Or how it compares to the other two?  Fascinating stuff.  Also, I see the price has increased from $35 - wondering if they'll offer the cube of these at some point soon? I'm in need of balls, and was ready to pull the trigger on the Tour X box, but....

Our recent move to AZ unearthed some buried treasures... such as box of Tour X with (3) sleeves inside.  These were from my product testing of both the Tour and Tour X a few years ago.  I found the Tour seemed fit my game a little better and have been playing them pretty regularly.  I played the X yesterday and had one of my best driving days in weeks.  It had absolutely nothing to do with the ball... but it's always fun fooling ourselves into thinking that's the case 😊.

This is the first I've heard of the Tour S.  Anyone have intel on whether it's a 3, 4... or maybe 5 piece construction 🤯?  As well as these have been received and at their price point, I can't imagine the folks at Maxfli (DSG) will mess too awful much with the winning formula.

I'm guessing this may very well have been one of the "I'd love to share but can't right now" responses Philip had during this afternoon's Zoom meeting with the forum.  Oh believe me, we all tried to wring it out of him but, like a well trained London Guard, we couldn't get him to blink 😄.

... The S stands for Soft. Spins less off irons, lower trajectory and obviously trying to grab some of the Chrome Soft players. I think we are all hoping of the discounts including the Cube. 🤟

I tried a dozen each of the Tour and TourX last year after the ball test results were published.  I really liked the Tour model.  Played every bit as good as ProV1.  I played the Tour X at courses when I traveled so that was not smart on my part as I couldn’t evaluate hem on my home course against the Tour model. I’m  a big fan of these balls except they seem to become dull during a single round.

Me too, as I have been playing Trufeel for past month. We have a hole that borders the driving range where the range balls end up in the middle of the fairway ( #3). It is pretty easy to tell the diff between the Trufeel and the Srixon yellow range balls.

... Let's wait for some reviews of both balls before declaring Mizuno better. I think if Mizuno's are as good as Maxfli Tour balls it will be a big win for Mizuno but that remains to be seen. Having talked with some Marketing VP's for golf balls it is always a tricky balance. When you price balls at $34.99 and far below the market leaders like Titleist, Callaway, Bridgestone and TaylorMade all at $49.99 much of the public thinks there is for a reason for the low price like cutting corners or inferior performance. OTOH you have knowledgable forum members that know a great bargain and take advantage of the low pricing.

... Srixon did this years ago with the Z Star at $39.99 and raised the price to $44.99 because the accountants in sales said they would make up in $5 profits what they lost in customers and they ended up losing in both because people just stopped buying the ball. They were really on a roll at $39 but I don't think they have recovered their previous market share from that poor decision. I think that is really a legit risk with the Maxfli Tour balls because even at $34.99 a dozen most of their sales came from 2 dozen for $60 and the Cubes 4 dozen for $104.99. So one dozen at $39.99 might be a tough sale for anyone not on a golf forum and even some of those might not buy at that price increase. It ill be interesting to see if they end up with a Cube at $125.99 or 2 dozen for $65.

Yeah, I think they were previously in a sweet spot but $40 brings up much more options and competition and just the perception of the price versus other premium brands may bring them back to reality fast.

How does the Tour compare to the Srixon Z star? Just got a prior gen 21 Z star in yellow at a low price. Now, this release makes me think otherwise.

... In the on course testing I did during a practice round. The Maxfli Tour, ProV1 and Z Star had basically the same performance. The Maxfli tour was consistently a few yards longer but on a few holes the ProV1 and Z Star were longer. Iron shots were interchangeable as were pitches and chips. The no brainer is the Maxfli sold for $105 for 4 dozen which is basically the price of 2 dozen ProV1's and 3 dozen Z Star.

Yeah, I think they were previously in a sweet spot but $40 brings up much more options and competition and just the perception of the price versus other premium brands may bring them back to reality fast.

Titleist rep at my course saying new ProV1s will be $55/doz. If the whole market is moving up $5/doz, then maybe the Maxfli's will still be in the same-ish boat as they were before?

Undoubtably there will be regular 2 dozen deals not to mention DSG survey coupons that will bring the price down.

As for those wondering about the Tour S, this is likely not far off from the Vice Pro Soft. These are both produced in the same white label factory (Foremost) and the Maxfli Tour/X and Vice Pro/Plus have the same construction/overall compression respectively (all except the Pro Plus have Foremost’s off the shelf 318 dimple pattern as well).

... Exchanged my Cube of last years Maxfli Tours for 3 dozen of the new Maxfli Tours. Since I used the $20 off $100 and $40 in rewards, 3 dozen only cost $60. It was an ordeal exchanging them because the system isn't set up for returning Rewards. Manager ended up just returning them without a receipt and we were talking about the ball that he said "It's a good ball" which was not exactly a ringing endorsement. I told him I had probably sent 10-20 golfers to his store for them and he completely unsolicited responded that MyGolfSpy rated them very high and some people came in after reading about them. MGS representing! 🤗

I will be waiting for side-to-side comparisons with the previous version. Are the increased ball speeds and lower spin real, or just marketing hype to justify the price increase? Is a new alignment marking alone worth the increase in price? 🙂

My uneducated opinion, having played both, is that they are better.

Hey Matt; can you provide a little more detail? In last year's best ball test, the Mizuno balls were very high quality, but the Tour X was very spinny and not particularly long. What did you like about them? Being a Mizuno fan, I always give their products a look when I'm in the market for anything. Thanks!

I won't be shopping in Dick's again.  They had a great product at a fair price and because it was popular they decided to jack the price up.  I'll be using Kirklands.
