Couldn't help but notice they didn't interview some experts for this by way of @dlow206 or @Golfspy_CG2

Really?

I have 4 sets of irons, 5 drivers, 4 putters, God only knows how many wedges, 3 sets of fairways and several additional hybrids over and above the 1 that I carry.

Much of this equipment is there to lend to folks who are visiting so that they can play without renting. I also have two full sets out on loan to a son and an in-law.

I would say the answer is either as much as your wife or significant other will tolerate or that you can keep hidden from her or him if not. 😀

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

I'd say I have too much.

Above what I have in my current bag: I have 3  3/4 woods, 2 sets of irons, 2 six irons, 4 wedges of various lofts, 6 putters.   Getting into non-clubs I have probably 15 dozen new balls of various makes and models, 30 dozen used ball, 25 gloves, 8 players towels, thousands of tees, and lots of ball markers and divot tools.   I should probably clean out the collection of stuff that will never get used.

The one thing I don't have is extra shoes; I only own 1 pair. 🤣

I would say I have too much as well, but there is something about having some sets that just mean something to me or project sets as well. I do want to get into the club building side of things a little more so for me although I may have some I won't use often it is also somewhat of a hobby.

Plus never know when I set may get on the naughty list and need to be put away for a round or two.

Actually they did reach out to me.  But when I gave them a rundown on the equipment I go through on an annual basis, they said they couldn’t use it, as it would make their own trials and testing look woefully inadequate.

Great question and something I have been low level concerned about.  Why? @revkev says it right here...

It is always best when SWMBO doesn't make any comments about the spares bags that occupy the limited space allotted to my interests.

Yes, totally agree.  What I need is in my bag and vehicle where it spends the half of the year golf season so that nothing is forgotten.

The too much is all the things tried and tested, replaced or superseded that still occupy space in the house.  It encourages me to be generous and give freely those things I know I will never use again but there are those things, the few that worked well for some time that held a special place in my peaceful golf mind.  So the spares bags (I have it reduced to 2 cart bags and a couple of those sports roll bags) contain the extras that one day will be just the right thing and then won't I be happy I hung onto them?! 😏

I also have 3 carts (pull, push, motocaddy) I have 4 sets of shoes and just tossed 4 more during the move. 15 dozen boxes of balls, two hitting mats, 10 ‘ putting mat, auto putting ball return, simulator, 6 logo ball racks filled with balls from each course I played, and countless other odds and ends.

That’s very little gear compared with what I have, but I am a fitter/dealer for a few golf equipment OEMs, plus I’m a charter dealer for several shaft manufacturers, including Fujikura and Mitsubishi.

On a separate note, we will be driving to Nashville next week, passing right by Greeneville on the way there, and then again coming home on January 1 or 2. What are the roads like there, and what is the forecast for next week? We’re going to be driving through there Tuesday afternoon/evening, unless it is slow going, in which case we will stop around Bristol for the night.

Well I just moved to NC but the roads are normally fine. You will be on Interstate 81 and 40. You will cruise through until you get to Knoxville which will slow down some. After that wide open until you get close to Nashville. Although it’s unseasonably cold it won’t last. It should be in the 40’s when you come through.

I have only one complete set here in Florida - but do have a almost complete set in Ohio (my old driver and irons). The bigger question is why they're only recommending ONE pair of shoes. I believe @fozcycle and I would strongly dispute that recommendation. My shoe collection is nothing like Fozs' but I do have 6 pair here in Florida and a bunch more in Ohio. Oh and how about bags? One down here in Fl and 2 bags in Ohio. Lastly I start getting nervous when I'm down to my last 3 doz  Vice Pro Plus balls even though I rarely lose them now- but only carry 6 in my golf cart.

Note: @cnosilthere's an easy solution to that one pair of shoes, I'll bet everyone will have sales next week.

I've mentioned this before, but other than my driver and 3 wood, all my clubs are hand-me-downs, thrift store finds, or garage sale pick-ups.  Been great for me as a newer player!

Having said that, beyond my current gamers I have three iron sets, two drivers, four putters, six random junior/ladies clubs for my girls (didn't take), eleven various wedges and chippers, a dozen random woods and hybrids, four 2 irons, an extra 6 iron, a lagshot 7 iron and an orange whip knockoff.

I have ten dozen new balls, a couple of five gallon buckets of used balls and now two pairs of shoes.  I could use more repair tools, ball markers, and gloves, though.

At a garage sale last May I passed on a giant staff bag which I'm now regretting.  Hoping to come across one again for storage purposes.

What I have already is pushing the boundaries of "too much." While still constantly looking, I won't pick anything up unless it's an obvious upgrade.

Thanks! I know that route well, having spent two Christmas holidays in Nashville with my son and grandkids (although the last one was more than a decade ago, since my son moved to New York State 10+ years ago after splitting up with his ex). I also used to travel that route from Johnson City all the way to Memphis, with stops in Knoxville, Nashville, and Jackson, TN when Tennessee was part of my sales territory in the early 2000s.

I currently have 3 sets of irons (Mizuno, Hogan, and Wilson), a partial set of Wilson Dyna-Power, 4 putters, and 3 bags. I also have 3 pairs of shoes. Two of those pairs are the Adidas spikeless I love and caught them on sale, it's a pain sometimes finding wides i like the look of.

I used to have a lot more equipment but trimmed down tremendously prior to our move from Oregon to Arkansas.  I still have several putters, several wedges, and a few extra woods lying around, along with a couple of training aids that never get used anymore.  I do have 6 pair of golf shoes, though and probably 5 dozen golf balls.  Still, I'm eyeing a new putter, maybe...thinking about adding a 6H to the arsenal, and not sure about what wedges I want to keep in the bag.  It's a never ending story.

To each his/her own. I never keep spares of any clubs. When I buy any new club, I get rid of its predecessor, even putters. I don't buy new clubs unless I'm dissatisfied or just bored with what I have. I don't want to be tempted to go back to what I had before, I do my homework before buying anything, and then commit to making it work no matter what. That said, I haven't bought any club that I regretted for the first few years or more. YMMV

[I'm the same with all possessions. We decluttered our household years ago (took over year), and now when we buy anything new, if it's a replacement the old is sold, donated or trashed - always. When we decluttered starting about 15 years ago, we were surprised at how much "stuff" we'd accumulated. Some of it hadn't been used in decades, that doesn't make sense to us. I guess we're the antithesis of hoarders.]

The night before I lay out the golf clothes for the morning then go to the shoe collection to make sure I've got the matching pair. And yes I've been told I've got a  bit of OCD. Don't get me started on matching grips, etc.

Lets see.

I have 3 drivers. 3 different woods lofted 14-17. 4 hybrids lofted 17-22. 3 sets of irons. 3 sets of wedges. 4 putters. 3 bags. And I've got a beautiful set of J15CBs, AMT Whites, BB&F ferrules, Iomic grips that I need to build. But what really irks the wife is the 20 long, skinny cardboard boxes in the corner of the garage.
