Splatt
Congrats, testers. This is perfect, a rangefinder is one of the major bits of kit I'm missing. I nearly bought a super cheap knock-off brand rangefinder one time for $100, but I thought better of it and I'll wait until I have the spare cash for a decent one. I currently use a Garmin Approach S60; I wonder if there would be much of a difference between what the watch says to a hazard of centre of the green to what the rangefinder says? sirchunksalot, GolfSpy_APH, tony@CIC and 1 other 4 Quote Driver: Speedzone 9.5 degree (love this club) Fairway Wood - Warbird (to be replaced ASAP) Hybrid - SIM2 MAX 19 degree, (not a fan, but getting there) Irons - Warbird 4 iron to PW (to be replaced ASAP) Wedges - MG2 50 degree, T22 54 degree, Hi-Toe 58 degree Putter - LAB Golf - MEZZ.1 MAX - 2023 MGS TEST Ball - E6 (stands for 3-putt apparently)

The thing to keep in mind is that commercial GPS can be a few yards off based on available accuracy levels and shooting to the center of a green will only work if the flag is in the center since you have to bounce the laser off of something to get a distance. There are pros and cons to each and as a player you need to figure out what works best….I am a fan of the combined units since they give the best of both. Berg Ryman
Very cool to get to follow along in the journey and I know this is a small things considering, but very happy to see the return of the intro post in thread instead of the set apart design from the last bunch of test threads. Also, I played this past weekend in VERY gray weather and my current, non-Cobalt, rangefinder was basically useless. I was literally walking distances off from sprinklerheads which I haven't done in a few years. This will be one of my main points in the review. vandyland
It came very well packaged and I already came up with what I *think* might be an interesting test for it. First up, it has to beat my amazon special. That will be like the play-in game before the big showdown against the type of range finder it is obviously targeting which I would imagine is the Bushnells of the world. First impressions are that you would have to be VERY unaware to not know that the slope was turned on as there is a large red light AND you have to slide a button rather forcefully to switch it (it isn't difficult but it isn't something you would do on "accident" which is good). The case is interesting as it used a stretchy/pulley close rather than a magnet or velcro. Right now it feels VERY secure and I like it but I wonder if it loses its stretch over this review (TIME WILL TELL!). The towel is a nice touch though I am not sure it is my "style" but I will see how it performs. It is microfibre so I think it will dry quite quickly. The rangefinder itself feels solid without being super heavy, fits in my hands well (I have pretty small hands) and has a "brightness" toggle which I have never seen before on the display but will probably work well in low light situations. The color scheme is a bit busy for me but, at the same time, I can understand that Cobalt is trying toget their name out there and it probably helps to have an eye catching design. Packaging was VERY secure and there were several "boxes within boxes" to protect the rangefinder. Arrived promptly and securely. Looking forward to testing it! Tom the Golf Nut
Right out of the box I was impressed. Packaging is stout. The case is a harder type of case and has a two-tone color (black and graphite). This will help it from being overlooked down in the cubby of a golf cart. My other units were all black and they did get left behind once or twice. Luckily the Pro shop put it aside for me. I do like the two-tone color of the unit as well. The cobalt blue on black looks sharp and again will prevent if from disappearing into the shadows of a golf cart cubby if not in the case. The display is a bright red color, and the brightness is adjustable. You can adjust it to where it almost hurts your eyes down to dim. The eye piece is adjustable for either wearing glasses or not and any distance in between that your eye requires. The slope on or off feature is a slide lever and it will not move accidently. Changing from yards to meters is just a push of the button located inside the brightness adjuster ring. I haven't even stepped outside or on the course with it yet and I can tell this is a high-quality unit and I will enjoy putting it through its paces. vandyland, rkj427, GolfSpy_APH and 5 others 8 Quote Driver, TSi 1 S Flex 3 wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 5 wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 7 Wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 5 Hybrid King Tec MMT R Flex Irons, Tour UST Recoil 95 R Flex (6 - Gap) Wedges, Snakebite KBS Hi- Rev2.0 54* & 60* Agera 35" Ultralight 14-way Cart Bag

There is also a very sturdy metal ring sewn to the back of the case. This ring also has a quick release like the type seen on "D" Rings. This easily connects to a ring on your golf bag. The unit in its case does fit in a golf bag's range finder pocket but orientated up and down. (At least in my bag) So, taking it in and out of the bag then case is not practical for round use. vandyland
Got it out on the course yesterday! Very quick to get a number and if you shoot it multiple times you get the same number almost every time (not the case with my amazon one). Things I missed (need to double check manual to make sure it isn’t an option) are “pulse lock” when I hit the flag and a “scan” option looking for the flag. It is really good at shooting hazards and I found the brightness feature necessary since the day varied from bright sunlight to light fog. Overall seemed very accurate and fast but this is not an official controlled test, that is coming… GolfSpy AFG, tony@CIC, GolfSpy SAM and 3 others 6 Quote STZ 230 9.5* "Std" setting STZ 230 Hybrid 18* "lower" setting Pro Fli-Hi 21.5* MALTBY TS1-IM 5-GW Equalizer II 54* Glide 4.0 (S) 58* L.A.B. Tom the Golf Nut
Some outside impressions: Bright sunlight all you need to do is adjust the brightness of the display. Beautiful feature. I even picked a target across the street shooting over my car with glare off the windshield with no problem. Stepped to the side to remove the glare and I got the same distance reading. I have a golf flag and have about 60 yards where I can shoot in the yard. Picked up on the flag easily. However, I did not get any jolt or audible sound from the unit telling me it was locked on. Does this only do that with the pins that have the reflective tops? Nothing in the manual gets into that. I will do more research on this. The battery indicator is giving me different readings. I turn the unit on, and it shows full. I scan and it drops to two thirds. Next time I turn the unit on it shows full. I'm not sure if this is normal or the battery is just weak to start. I thought because it was cold out (45 degrees) it might have caused the battery to prematurely drain but it is doing the same thing indoors. I'll keep an eye on this. rkj427, GolfSpy SAM, GolfSpy AFG and 5 others 8 Quote Driver, TSi 1 S Flex 3 wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 5 wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 7 Wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 5 Hybrid King Tec MMT R Flex Irons, Tour UST Recoil 95 R Flex (6 - Gap) Wedges, Snakebite KBS Hi- Rev2.0 54* & 60* Agera 35" Ultralight 14-way Cart Bag

DaveP043
Unboxing/First Impressions I returned from a few days in Hilton Head (poor me!) to find a box from Wyoming. Considering that Cobalt is a DTC operation, I expected that they'd have thought out some pretty sturdy packaging, and I wasn't disappointed. The rangefinder itself was packed securely in a box within a box, sturdy formed cardboard. As you can see, the kind folks at Cobalt included a logo hat. There are also directions, a lens-cleaning cloth, and a couple of Cobalt stickers . First impressions, the carrying case is solid, typical elasticized loop closure. On the back are two loops to string it on a belt, and a round carabiner loop to hang it from another piece of equipment. The unit itself looks good, the black and blue color scheme works for me. Its a very solid feel, the controls work smoothly. I won't get it on the course until late next week, so I won't talk at all about the performance. One thing I noticed, and that I really like, is the switch for the slope. This is a toggle, you can clearly see that the slope is enabled (as in the photo) or disabled. Beyond that, if you've pressed the “Fire” button, a red light is activated to show anyone nearby that the slope function is enabled. I play a fair amount of competitive golf, I want to KNOW before I take a sight that the slope is off. I don't want to look at my target and THEN realize slope is on, I'd have to penalize myself. This rangefinger makes it absolutely clear, and I like that. tony@CIC, sirchunksalot, GolfSpy_APH and 1 other 4 Quote Irons Titleist T200, AMT Red stiff Rogue SubZero, GD YS-Six X T22 54 and 58 wedges 7-wood 5-wood B60 G5i putter Right handed Reston, Virginia

Tom the Golf Nut
Took the Cobalt out to the range today after work. Interesting enough the range does not have flags but it has posts for distance markers. The Cobalt had no problem locking onto the posts. It even locked on and gave me the vibration and audible feedback. The seven power magnification made the task easy. I took out my tectectec unit to compare. It has a six power magnification. It struggled to pick up on the far posts (220 yards) without shooting past and picking up a tree behind the post. So you really had to scan and pay attention. The display is a gray color on the Tectectec. I can really appreciate the red display that the Cobalt has. The Cobalt had no trouble with the post at that distance. I was able to get my phones camera to take a picture through the eye piece on the lasers. This will show a good visual between the units. I want to take some better pictures tomorrow. Then I'll post them. sirchunksalot, GolfSpy SAM, DaveP043 and 3 others 6 Quote Driver, TSi 1 S Flex 3 wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 5 wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 7 Wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 5 Hybrid King Tec MMT R Flex Irons, Tour UST Recoil 95 R Flex (6 - Gap) Wedges, Snakebite KBS Hi- Rev2.0 54* & 60* Agera 35" Ultralight 14-way Cart Bag
vandyland
So today was a inadvertent test, it was 40 degrees and raining and quite foggy. So foggy in fact that it provided a good test for the cobalt. I tried to get pictures of the conditions but I don't even think this quite captures it. The Cobalt did quite well, though there were some flags I had to shoot a few times to get them but my other rangefinder couldn't even pick them up. Overall a very good day for the Cobalt. GolfSpy SAM
Given that the unit isn't magnetic (a feature I absolutely love about mine when I'm using a cart), is there any issue so far about keeping it handy? When I'm walking, mine just lives in its case hanging from my bag, but the magnetic ability to attach it to the side of my cart is pretty awesome, especially when shooting for other people I'm playing with. Is anyone thinking about a workaround, maybe attaching a magnetic plate to one side (not sure that's possible, are there buttons on both sides of the case?)? I love walking a course, but for those who only use a cart, what's the verdict? When I'm walking, mine just lives in its case hanging from my bag, but the magnetic ability to attach it to the side of my cart is pretty awesome, especially when shooting for other people I'm playing with. Is anyone thinking about a workaround, maybe attaching a magnetic plate to one side (not sure that's possible, are there buttons on both sides of the case? GolfSpy_APH
Great to see it works in... Needless to say I have a lot of that here and it can be bad enough to close courses. vandyland, tony@CIC and Bang60 2 1 Quote as of Nov 6, 2023 (Past WITB) Driver: Paradym TD w/ GD ADDI 6X Driver Shootout! Tom the Golf Nut
I was able to take the Cobalt out for a full 18 today. I’ll say that I am impressed. The unit found all the flags with no misses and the jolt and vibration sound let you know for sure that it got the yardage right. I even moved locations so there was something past the pin and in line. No errors whatsoever. I took my other unit out of the bag for retirement when I got home it is that good. Crystal clear optics and 7x zoom left no doubt what you were looking at. I still see full battery. But when you scan it drops to 66 percent. Next time I hit the trigger it’s back at 100%. I plan on ignoring it and see how many rounds the battery will last. The range finder fits nicely in the cup holder in the golf cart. So not being magnetic is not an issue for me. Walking with the Motocaddy will be a different mounting challenge. The case does hang on one of the bags rings fine. But I’m not happy with the hang down angle. I have some ideas that I’ll work on for better mounting possibilities.
