Road trip as a Single

I am taking a road trip this June 2023 with the first half of the trip with purpose. Driving from Oregon to lets call it Superior Wi, close enough. While in Northern Wi/MN I'll play a few rounds in that area. On my way back to OR I want to hit up a couple 3-4 rounds along the way. My route is from Superior, WI across MN into Fargo ND along 94 thru MT and hitting interstate 90 Billings, Butte, Missoula, Spokane, Tri Cities and then home to the wet side of oregon.

my question, Anyone know of played or have hidden gems that would be a good stop to take break play a round and move my way down the road??

Thanks folks

Nice trip!!  How much are you willing to pay to play a round and how far off your path are you willing to travel to play?

Can't help you until you get to Idaho/WA.  Lot's of nice city/county courses in Spokane area reasonably priced.  Circling Raven on the southern end of Lake Coeur d'Alene is more expensive but one of our favorites we play each year.  It's about a 45 minute drive off I-90, but there's a casino and hotel there with stay and play package.  While the resort course in Coeur d'Alene is beautiful and unique, I think it's overpriced.  If you can time it right, @Thin2win lives in Spokane and I will come join you.  Love to play up there.  Down here in the Tri-Cities I would venture over to Walla Walla to play Wine Valley, a little expensive... but nothing like it in Portland!!  I would also join you there; love it!!  As you drive over the Columbia River from Pasco to Richland on I-182, the golf course to your right is our muni Columbia Point... wave to me!!  When you hit I-84, a jog east 30 minutes to Pendleton gets you to Wildhorse and another casino/hotel course that's another favorite.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

As long as there is a way to keep heading west i don’t mind getting off the beaten trail as a matter of fact I prefer non path. That said I might alter my route and go a little further north and hit Minot ND, I have a nephew that lives there. Stay on HWY 2 thru MT and go thru Glacer Nat’l park into Whitefish Mt. Cut across Kootenai Nat’l forest. I might need to get home by then I’ll play it by ear but would love to hit Wine Valley as a capper to the trip. Plenty of time to decide and all this depends on how long I stay in Wisconsin.

Thanks for the suggestions, much appreciated

I got really excited when I saw the thread title as I have my fair share of experience doing golf trips as a single, but not in the area you are going.

Good luck and looking forward to to seeing how it all goes for you!

If you are staying around Superior and Duluth, Mn try to get up to Giants Ridge in Biwabik,MN, there are two courses that are beautiful.  The Quarry and The Legend at Giants Ridge.  It would be a little over an hour to get there. Have fun on your trip and if you play in Duluth remember everything breaks towards Lake Superior about 2"!

There is a chance I may need to go to Chicago. If that happens I'll hit something there and I've already been looking at Sand Valley. If I don't Sand Valley is 4.5 hrs south, not sure I'll make it.

There is a in Michigan called American Dunes I think I hear about from the guys on XM radio PGA channel. I thought I might go that way if I have to go to Chicago.

Clearly I am very undecided at this point.

That's exactly where I'll be, Suoptown mostly, then east towards Brule.  I've skied Giants Ridge but never golfed there, That's a good one to put on the list Thank you.

Leaving Superior and on your way east, George Young Golf is just east of Iron River, MI. And continuing east, Sweetgrass and Sage Run near Escanaba and Greywalls in Marquette are great.

It's not about how well you're playing, but who you're playing with.

I was stationed at Minot AFB in ND for 15 years.  Souris Valley is the local muni and it is a decent course.  The other available is on the old Country club grounds.  It moved after the 2011 flood destroyed it and most of the town but the course was rebuilt as a public one.  It happened after I left so I can't attest to good or bad.  If you have the chance try the Links of North Dakota just west of Minot on Hwy 2 in Ray, ND.  Rumored to be one of the best public courses in the US but again, built after I left so again can't say good or bad but it is a top 100 course and feedback sounds like it is a hidden gem off the beaten path. No trees but that is most of North Dakota.

Could have added this as well.  If you are passing through Fargo, ND there is a Robert Trent Jones designed course in Oxbow, ND just outside of Fargo.  Oxbow Country Club is a club but for locals.  It was public for non-residents.  Renovated in 2019 and 7400 yards from the tips.  Recently named Golf Digest #1 course in ND.  I've played it and it can be a beast.  Worth the side trip.

Take a look at The Cragun's Resort Legacy courses and Madden's Resort courses at Brainerd, MN. Cragun's Legacy courses are being renovated by Tom Lehman and his new Championship course will probably not be open yet this summer but they do have 36 holes open. Madden's Resort features The Classic, one of the top courses in the country. Just up the road a bit is Deacon's Lodge an Arnold Palmer course. There are other great courses in that area too, like The Pines and the Preserve. They are a part of the Grand View Lodge property. Then farther west is Thumper Pond at Ottertail, MN. Lots of trees right up to the fairways but a very nice course. All have stay and play packages. In ND, Bully Pulpit at Medora, ND is very nice.

I drove from Seattle to WI last summer and stopped 4 times to “stretch my legs”. First stop was Creek at Qualchan in Spokane…beautiful course in excellent condition. I also stopped in Forsyth MT…Forsyth Country Club, followed by Miles City CC, and Cottonwood in Casselton ND. In MT/ND Country Club means 9 holes, cheap and uncrowded. Miles City was pretty cool…old course, big trees, very nice. Forsyth was better than I expected and Cottonwood was a good place to stretch the legs…picture farmers playing on their day off…very unpretentious but it was golf!  I had a great time at all of them. I’ve also played previously in Billings and Missoula and both towns have a couple nice courses. Have a fun trip.

I can't help with any course recommendations, unless you detour south to SW MO.  However, I admire your playing as a single.  Each time we go on vacation, I play as a single and have been paired up with some very nice people.  In fact, I have made some friendships that continue to this day.

Pretty cool a good portion of the courses mentioned are on this list.  On that note, the Oregon courses are about right except for Aspen Lakes. I have played all but two of the courses mentioned, Silvia's ranch and Crosswater.  Crosswater is doing some renovation and not open in early June, I am not sure when they will re-open. Aspen lakes was just sold ion the last couple of months. It was family owned for many years (30 I think, but the last time I played it May 22 if wasn't in very good shape for the price they charged. I was extremely disappointed as hit has been in pretty good shape the other times I have played it.

I like that the Minot course and Whitefish Mt course are both listed. Not sure I'll make it to Brained if I take the northern route. I have played a couple of the courses in that area. At that time tho I had zero idea how to golf and was more interested in how many beers I could put away and what girls were around.

If you don't want to go as far south as Brainerd, MN take a look at Lakeview National at Two Harbors, MN. The course is just 30 minutes north of Duluth. I played a two day tournament there.

Some of the holes offer a great view of Lake Superior as a bonus. It's not very expensive either. I believe it's $23 for 9 holes and $33 for 18, weekdays and weekends. You could catch 18 there

either on your way to or back from Giants Ridge although I don't think there is a good direct route. Another nice course in that area is Superior National at Lutsen. If I recall correctly, it's about

90 miles up the north shore from Duluth. Although both of these courses are nice, I don't think they're quite in the same category as the Giants Ridge courses.

I could hit those two during my stay. I doubt I'll make the trek to Lutsen this trip, Two harbors is possible just depends on if I get time and someone else goes when I'm there. I plan on spending my time there with my family as much as possible.  I used to Ski Lutsen when I was in HS, great times fun fast runs. wish I knew how to pick up girls back then.
