The answers continue to be very interesting.  Thanks everyone for the input.  The club data from Arccos adds an interesting dimension as well.

Na, it's the longest club that people hit off the turf, that with a smaller head than a driver.

For me, once I factored in Shot Scope data it was super helpful to see what would replace it.

5W for me.

It's the first club down from driver, and I don't like hitting FW's off the deck. But since I bought a 19° Cobra Radspeed One-Length hybrid (24° too), I find that I rarely use 5W off any tee. And that's because I hit the 19° OL way farther from the tee than I'd anticipated pre-purchase.

But... that's only because driver has been behaving for a while now. While the OL hybrid gives impressive distance, it doesn't give me 5W tee distance. The 5W will remain in the bag for when (not if, LOL...) the driver misbehaves.

If I am playing half decently I will use my 3 wood once, on the second shot on a long uphill par 5.   If I am playing poorly I might need it a few more times, which is always 'fun'

  • 3 weeks later...

My initial thought was my 60º because I didn't grow up with one and really only ever use it to get me out of a jam. But if I'm being honest, it might actually be my 5 iron. I just don't end up with that yardage very often and looking at it, it's the newest looking iron in the bag.

No way. I’ll hit my 3 wood 5 times for every time I hit my driver. It’s absolutely essential!

In the FWIW category, on my last round, my 4H redeemed itself and has again bumped the 5I out of the bag. I think it knew that it was on the block.  I made some really nice shots with it (to include a semi controlled "super fade"- around a huge tree that someone had obviously placed there by mistake- and rolled it up on the front edge of the green, plus a towering shot over some tree limbs to help cut the corner on the 18th). And I might have even gained a few yards with it too (always a bonus). It looked like I actually knew what I was doing🙃

Unless I'm in a greenside bunker (infrequent, given home-course layout & typical shot patterns), it is the Lw/60'. Then, depending on tee selection &/or course conditions, it is the Driver (if forward) or the 3w (if back, wet).

Oddly this year it's been the 4 crossover. A club that use to be a go to in many situations has really been just sitting doing nothing.

Probably more to do with the length the course is playing, but is unexpected still!

The 3H is the one that finishes a round clean sometimes.

The reality is I hit my 17° 4w really straight and I am hitting my 5H better and better the more I use it at 26°. It's just a really good loft for me to lay into and flight an approach. 22° where I have the 3H adjusted feels like the flight of the ball stays low and gets back to the ground quicker than even my 4w. If I'm not going to roll out after the carry distance, I find little use for this trajectory.

I imagine it has something to do with the courses I play. They are soft grass, very little elevation and also I've been known to play in all sorts of weather so the amount I play on a hard track that will help the ball run is limited.

Probably my 5 wood.  But that's primarily because from that distance I typically use my HL 3 wood or my 4 hybrid.  May look into replacing it with a 7 wood or 3 hybrid for better gapping.

My 60* wedge rarely gets used, possibly not even once per round.  I do use a 54/8 wedge or otherwise chip.  I'm not sure why I have it other than I'm expected to?????  It will be coming out, possibly to be replaced by a utility iron.  The rest of the bag is good

I'm a weirdo. It's my 9 iron. I'm so likely to pull it left that I tend to avoid it like the plague. Even if it's the obvious choice based on distance I usually flinch and try to either hit a full swing PW or 3/4 swing 8 instead. Yeah, I know, it's all in my head, and I recently hit one of the best shots of my life with it, but still.

FWIW, I tend to use my 60 degree out of green side bunkers but almost never anywhere else, but that's still once or twice a round for me.

A 3 hybrid, and a 5 hybrid.  I use a 3 driving iron (Mizuno MP 18 MMC)  instead of the 3 hybrid (I carry both, why, ???)  and I like my 6 iron a little better than the 5 hybrid.  But at the range I hit these 2 hybrids a lot for working on my mechanics.  I currently play where the "rough" is not thick grass, it is muck and hardpan under trees, so the rescue hybrids to get out of rough, are not needed.  Unlike previous course I was near, with thick grass rough.

Driver: PXG 0211, A flex Evnflo Riptide (2021). And an old Callaway 454 TI (2004) on regular flex.

3 W: Callaway Steelhead Xr A flex Tensei CK 55 gram. The rest are Regular flex.

5 W : Titleist TSi 1 on Aldila Ascent regular flex.

Driving Iron: Mizuno MP 18 MMC 3 18 degree, on Mamiya Recoil reg flex.

4 iron:  Mizuno Fly-Hi, 24 degree hybrid iron, GFF, even tho it is a hollow body iron.

6,7,8,9,wedge: Ping I 500, on Recoil reg flex shafts.

Gap wedges: 52 x 9 Mizuno forged S5, wedge shaft; 60 x 6 Mizuno forged T7, wedge shaft.

Sand: Old original Hogan Sure Out on Apex original shaft, probably 56 / 12.

Chipper:  (yep I carry a chipper) old Don Martin "Up n In" bronze? copper? 🙂

Nah.  I'm old so I hit a low profile, flat bottom, 3 wood a lot on fairway and modest rough or hardpan, and have a different 3 wood with a deeper face and more rounded bottom, for the tee box.  The low profile is a vintage 2011, Adams Speedline LP with the velocity slot, on a Matrix Ozik shaft.  Spent a lot of time hitting off the turf or mat at the range to "master" it.

I got arccos a couple years ago, and after 12 rounds realized I only used my 60* 3 times! down the rabbit hole we went.

So out it went, and since I was struggling with tight lie chipping, I put in a chipper.

Once I got the feeling back with 7i chipping, the chipper & 56* went out, and 54* & 58* went in.

Didn't like that too much, so 54* & 58*out, and 56* & 19* hybrid in.

Didn't use the 19* at all (like 3W & 22* mashie better) so pulled that out, and carried two putters (blade & Mallet) to help with lag putting.

After I got laughed at, I finally came to my senses, and put a "desert" wedge in.  Not many desert courses in Illinois, but it's nice to have a junk PW to hit from paths, bridges, roots, flower beds, acorn shells, sand less and/or crunchy bunkers and other exotic locations I sometime find myself in.  No fear of snapping it on a root or wrapping it around a tree trunk, when a replacement is $10 in the bargain barrel.

I have an old Don Martin Up-n-In chipper.  Bronze I think.  I use it a lot instead of a 60 deg or trying to chip with a 7 iron, which shaft is way too long and lie is off, for good chipping.

It’s all course dependent for me. I play in 3 leagues, all on different courses. But on all 3, rarely use my 3wd HL. On 2 of the courses, depending on wind, I can use it for drivable par 4s. Don’t get much use out of my 4h,4&5 irons as well. But when I play regular rounds with friends, on different courses, I tend to use about all clubs. I’m pretty much a bomb & gouge guy though. So driver & 7,8,9,p, 52°/58° get the majority of the work.

I live in Oceanside, now play O'side Muni.  Use to live near Twin Oaks and played Twin Oaks,  O' muni has a lot of hard pan, bare earth, instead of thick rough, so now I find I don't need a "rescue".

I live in Oceanside, now play O'side Muni.  Use to live near Twin Oaks and played Twin Oaks,  O' muni has a lot of hard pan, bare earth, instead of thick rough, so now I find I don't need a "rescue".

I used to make the trek from La Mesa to Torrey to do some caddying- it was definitely worth my while- plus I got free admission t the Andy Williams San Diego Open(yes I know that I just dated myself🤣)
